Post by: MrShovelFace on May 26, 2011, 10:36:45 pm
Post your favorite old school game (with screen shot)

Stronghold Crusader
not quite that old but still a masterpiece of isometric glory
(This one is the most perfected in the series)

I was 10 when this game came out, loved it. Also Warcraft 2 was out around that time too. Baldurs Gate is another awesome game that came out a little later.

Yeah, not the oldest of oldschool but they're definately old and they're definately awesome lol.

I think the oldest awesome games I can remember are games like Alex the Kid and Outrun on the Sega Master System. I also used to play my fathers old Spectrum as a kid, with the games on tapes that took FOREVER to load and all looked like complete shit, but there were some fun games on there like Bruce Lee.

King of Dragon Pass. Don't know it? Shame on you. See pictures in spoiler.

It's not massively old (1999), but it's incredibly unique, inventive and gripping, and ranks as one of my all-time favourite games.

Clonk
fully destructible terrain (and not on "block" terrain), fun as hell multiplayer (up to 4 players on 1 tastatur, online possible, too), thousands of mods. It had everything, spent way too much time on that game. Everytime I see that Terraria stuff I have to think about good old Clonk, beeing way more awesome and way less weaboo.

Best adventures:
Beneath a steel sky (cyberpunk, good humor, very thrilling)

Gabriel Knight

Best newest classic:
Battlezone (specially I, II wasn't that good) - awesome narration, and one of the first (and best) mixtures of a strategy game and a FPS game. You build up a base from within your tank, scavage raw materials, build units, and then lead the units into battle. That shit was awesome.

Let's see, what else...
my favourite economics game:
oldtimer/motor city: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/496/Motor+City.html
my favourite.. whatever:
cover action. that thing is so freakin awesome. And it gets you addicted like nothing else. Probably the best "secret agent" game ever. (Just realised it's from sid meier. Figures. ) Fly around the world and trace down terrorists.
http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/139/Covert+Action.html

what else: UFO, of course, the discworld adventure game, alone in the dark (I nearly shit my pants with that game when I was a kid), Incredible Machines, Descent, Lost Vikings, Magic Carpet (*cough*), Neuromancer, Zak McKracken, Cannon Fodder for the Gore, and last but defniately not least: Elite (+ sequels)

Frontier is probably the best game I ever played. An entire galaxy, newtonian game engine, a full economy, a ton of ships and dozens of missions... all on a single floppy disk? Practically witchcraft. Seriously, it will always be the granddaddy of space opera's for me.

For something a little more action-y though, you cant go wrong with:

So many erm The Bards tale on my spectrum 48k, also I liked those adventure games eg: you are in a dark cave a man jumps out from a rock waving a stick, then you typed something like, hit man with sword etc
spent many hours trying to figure those games out.

I know doom has been mentioned, but that's not the most awesome oldschool game. It's actually Doom 2, because my brother and me could deathmatch that over a null-modem cable (and later over our coax network).  Our specialy edited version of the first map, named 'Go to hell' remained our most popular entertainment untill duke nukem 3d and quake 1 came along.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

One notable moment among the many hours of doom 2 (keyboard only) deathmatch: my introduction of the 'specially adapted' version of our favorite deathmatch map: i added secret rooms with controls to close doors, operate light and for the grand finale: boss monsters to appear. You know, the fat guys with the chainguns and the huge rocket shooting endboss. I can still hear the screams and shouts of indignation when i interrupted our deathmatch session to show the power of the mapmaker.
Too bad 'build', the map editor, kept crashing.

How we hated 'lame' bfg use. How we debated which was better, the double barreled shotgun or the rocket launcher? Good times.  :D

Also, why has nobody mentioned Civilization 1? It was awesome!

And why has nobody mentioned Ultima Underworld? Also awesome!

im not that old, even aoe I was before my time but aoe2 was one of the first games I got addicted to. and its pretty timeless I still play it occasionally. this game still has better gfx than alot of modern games imo. I just wish it had functional online multiplayer cause hamachi/garena is fun pretty dodgy/laggy.

yet to play another game with ability to make own single player campaigns too....

In no particular order. Some people may say that some of these games are not really "old-school", but whatever rings the nostalgic bells for me is old-school, doesn't matter if it's early 90s or early 2000s.

Blade Runner, one of the best "movie games" ever released

(click to show/hide)

Outcast, what a beauty
(click to show/hide)

Grim Fandango . The final masterpiece that came out  when the golden age of adventure games (quests) was at it's dusk.

(click to show/hide)

Death Rally

(click to show/hide)

Omikron : The Nomad Soul  (from the creators of Farenheit/ Heavy rain), a ridiculously underrated game full of brilliant and original ideas. OST made by David bowie 0_o.
(click to show/hide)

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (2 was also great, but this one will be remembered forever)

(click to show/hide)

Donkey Kong Country 1-2 . Mario has nothing on this imo. Ah , the music...

Gex (for 3D0 game system. Yeah i know, wtf is that ? ). Game full of style and win .

One of the first games I remember playing was Moria.  All the graphics were keyboard symbols and you fought a lot of k's.  Those were kolbolds.

(click to show/hide)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moria_(video_game) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moria_(video_game))

Ultima 7 really blew my mind.  I never made any attempts to beat the game because I was too busy stealing everything not bolted down and making bread.  You could get water from a well, combine it with flour, put the dough in an oven or over a fire and boom.  Bread.  Probably the first real sandbox style game I ever played.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Crusader: No Remorse.  It was so much fun to set off chain reaction explosions.

(click to show/hide)

Marshmallow Duel!  A game two people could play on the same keyboard.  You one-shot the other player then your marshmallow man does a funky victory dance.

(click to show/hide)

Honorable mentions: Syndicate, Legends of Valour, Commander Keen, Jagged Alliance, Another World, Warmonger, B-17 Flying Fortress and Dune 2.

It's a shame that no one has posted this. Baldurs Gate II.

I did mention Baldurs Gate the original, never really got into the second game, I think I just really disliked the linear and long introduction, forcing you to go through a ton of shit at the start, I prefer my intro's to RPGs to either be very quick or non-existant and/or non-linear, makes it more enjoyable for me to play through again.

Deus Ex:
(click to show/hide)

...

In my opinion, Deus Ex was crap. Yeah i know people tell me that the story was great, but it has more holes than my noodle colander.
I mean, you are a federal agent and you were prepared your whole life to hunt terrorists, like your brother.
Then during a mission, one of the terrorists tell me "The government is the real evildoer." and my own brother adds "Yeah, he is right. Come and join the revolution." (I have allready found out, that the half of the organisation are double agent.)
And then i should really switch the sides, because of what facts?
Ok, there was a mission for some "evidence" but this was only a report from a third person.

And the bomb in the helicopter. A suspicious sound, a dead mechanic and another nervous one. Yeah that is so unsuspicious, there is no need to check your machine.

So basically it was a game with a crap storyline and some improved basic  FPS features.

decent freespace (1/2) (the other best space sim out there) even now its a beautiful game.

There's a good documentary about Volition up on Game Informer with a section on the development of freespace.

To be fair, you can report the bomb.

Clonk
fully destructible terrain (and not on "block" terrain), fun as hell multiplayer (up to 4 players on 1 tastatur, online possible, too), thousands of mods. It had everything, spent way too much time on that game. Everytime I see that Terraria stuff I have to think about good old Clonk, beeing way more awesome and way less weaboo.

I know it isn't that old, it already has SVGA graphics, but nontheless it's a pure CLASSIC, and none of the many JA3's could reach its quality! A relatively new patch was released, putting it on version 1.13. Try it out!

Are we all old farts here?

Here's a C64 game:
Red Storm Rising. A sub sim, truly primitive graphics. I have not found one as fun since.

Star Control 2

The X-wing games.

All things Bullfrog, especially magic carpet.

Heavy Gear - Unbalanced, and to top it off, occasionally defeating an opponent so bad his character gets deleted after a funeral scene. Mechs on roller skates.

Mechwarrior 2, 3, 4

and...
Jane's Longbow. Disguised as a game, a helicopter training sim. Two hour stealth missions, woo hoo!

My favourite oldschool games:

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time. N64 game. Didn't spent a lot of time playing it but the atmosphere was awesome!

(click to show/hide)

The Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind. Same for this game. Great atmosphere, played it a lot, but never ended the main story cause in there you can do whatever you want. Also great graphics and big world.

Age of Empires 2 The Conquerors is a game I played a lot, invented tactics and stuff and still play it in multiplayer online with my friends or via LAN.

Master of Magic.. I recently played through it a couple of times. Fantastic game, and there is STILL nothing like it out there. (That I'm aware of)

It is simply incredible that no one has picked it up and made an instant win game from that concept. Even just making a remake with proper graphics, a tad of balancing and you have a great game. I tried all the "spiritual successors" I could find, but they are all crap compared to it.

For those that don't know it, It's like civ, mixed with magic and tactical battles, mixed with 2 planes. Mixed with endless starting options.. A bookshelf of different spells.. It's pure creative and unleashed freedom in strategy and  immersion. Try it!

Tetris ?

I can hardly remember of anything good and older I played. Well yes pong but it's not awesome.

+1 for Dungeon Keeper  :o

Umm, Oblivion?

Yes, I'm also part of those that loved Oblivion. Obviously it was because I installed like a few hundreds of mods. Some of the biggest and best mods could turn the fail leveling and difficulty system (that still got me hooked like 300 hours with quests and all that crap)  into a really passionating game. Furthermore, modders made literally over 9000 new quests, monsters, weapons, armors, spells, npc, or even entire towns. The graphic enhancement mods also were extremely good. Texture packs, wheather mods, day and night effects on chimneys and windows. Trees, buildings, signs, doors, flora... hell, even rocks got modded.

I can say that Oblivion was maintained as a state of the art game for at least 4 years thanks to the mods. As is, it was already good, although some problems became frustrating after a while. But with mods you could effectively get a beautiful game with the liberty of Daggerfall and the quests of Morrowind.

Alot of these have been said already but I'd still like to share my thoughts.

-Diablo 1 (scared the shit out of me and my friend when we used to play late nights in summer)
-Ultima online (my first and last mmo)
-Age of empires (played the day it came out and was addicted for months)
-Sim Ant
-Chrono Trigger (fav RPG)
-Stronghold (not really old but still good)
-Nightmare 3d (old doom ripoff type shooter, loved the music)
-Heroes of might and magic 3
-Age of wonders (love this game probably my fav turn based strategy )
-X-COM UFO (My fav turn based strategy)
-Starcraft (played the shit out of this one till got bored and played td's for awhile after)
-Warcraft 2 (Loved it)
-Counter-strike (My most played game, started playing in '99 when it was in beta and still a mod for hl. quit around the time steam came out and forced you to dl steam to play. Love steam now but back in the day I saw it as the enemy.)

Can't believe how much I played Sim Ant as a kid.

X-Com was amazing, but way too hard for me when I was a kid.  Picked it back up couple years ago and really got into it, even if it was 10 years too late

Shivering Isles expansion had a drop-jaw world if completed, Oblivion vanilla was just... Meh... especially after proving how cool they could get with Morrowind... After the Dunmer culture, the Oblivion centerpiece being boring empire missing 7 skills and watered down magic and cookie cutter western was just...  blegh, though the Oblivion plane was cool in some spots...

Meh...

And since when is Oblivion old school?!

Exactly, I am in love with it for being original, characters you actually give a crap about (face it, The Mad God made you come back for more with his speeches) as well as eventually even being able to change the weather with a snap of your fingers. Man, I have the urge to explore those Xendric (or however they are called) ruins again. I love how colourful and dangerous and unique the whole place was. Even the special items were nifty (Like the Dawn/Dusk blade or the hilarious Soul Tomato).

Yes you can! You need:
- Dosbox (A ms-dos emulator, work 100% on windows) It's a virtual ms-dos machine.
- Abandonware pages (a lot)

I don't know at this moment where you can find battle chess, but i'm sure that googling 5 minuts, you find it.

You can get Battle Chess on GOG.com for $5.99.  They say it's Windows compatible but I bet it still needs DosBox.  They've got tons of other classics on there too like Crusader: No Remorse and the Castles games.

God, thinking of all these games brings back a lot of memories. They also made me think of arcades which I haunted back in the day. Here is my top 3 arcade games of all time:

Golden Axe: This game was revolutionary for 1989.

Dungeons & Dragons Tower of Doom: One of the first arcade games with an inventory and the ability to make choices of where you go. It was pretty in-depth.

Aliens vs Predator: The 1994 arcade version. The best side-scrolling fighting game ever. If you think otherwise, you are wrong.

and then of course all the sonics on megadrive!
I even had the sonic & Knuckles (sonic 4 on megadrive) that would open on the top so you could add another cartridge and play knuckles in sonic 2!......sonic fans will understand what I'm talking about.

I beat X-com back in the day, the funniest thing about X-com was once you discovered psionics all your best guys had extremely low ratings in it, my very best guy had 0 defense against it lol

Imy last mission only my best guy ended up being alive,  Almost immediately my Elite psionics crew was wiped from the battle lol, he walked into the final command room(I didn't know it was the command room), some alien shot him, he auto-turned and killed that guy, the enemy commander then panicked and dropped his weapon, killed that guy and saw the outline of the "Brain", shot that out of reflex....

and Cutscene of victory lol, epic game, unfortunately Terror from the deep wasn't actually made by the same designers(they didn't feel like paying them) and ended up sucking more (actually had a never fixed bug where if u interrogated an enemy base commander too early in the tech tree you couldn't win the game lol)

I see people saying Ultima Online was the first MMORPG, this is actually not true, I believe the first graphical MMORPG was closer to something like Shadows of Yserbius on The Sierra Network (younger folks remember this incorrectly as the TEN network), even the Dark Sun MMORPG predates Ultima Online..........

really the first multiplayer role playing games were the MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons) text games............

similar to games like Legend of the Green Dragon/Trade Wars played on Bulletin Board Systems way before the World Wide Web was truly accessible to so many...........these games had all the elements of a MMORPG(multiple players influencing the game, leveling, items, etc) just limited/no graphics(or ASCII graphics)

I used to play Trade Wars/Legend of the Green Dragon all the time, and so many other games I can't remember the names of back before Microsoft Windows even existed against all sorts of people on Bulletin Board Systems, I even remember games were players from Different BBS's were playing against each other

(some kind of world war III game was like that, can't remember the name of it)

Yeah once you get mind control the game gets very boring. I always get a blast doing the first 2-3 mission , separating my guys by squads and clearing one building at a time, waiting on the corner of the door, listening if at the end of the round there's any door opening or shot fired... but as soon as you get the hover tanks and blaster, you leave all your guys in the Avenger and get sick of doing battles, you just crash the UFOs in the water :P

As for blade of steel , I wish I still had it :( The fights were the best :P

Either battling zombies in the slums of Neverwinter, or slaughtering trolls out in the deep woods, this is for sure one of the best RPG's I've ever played. This game not only got me hooked on the pc at the time, but also is what first created TheDashingRogue.
OMG OMG OMG WHERE DID YOU FIND THAT M&B VERSION OF ARIBETH :D:D:D

Needless to say, I LOVED Neverwinter Nights :D

I missed trying to achieve the mission at GrandMaster rank, throwing shuriken , drinking that healing potion, slashing people .. but the best .. the silent kills with the little animations.. Priceless

At least NWN2 allowed me to somewhat create my Warlock, but without a lot of his original awesomeness!
I first started out as Saer_The_Dashing_Rogue but shortened it to TheDashingRogue when I started using it for other things. NWN2 might have been good if it had better camera effects and not such a shitty storyline. I hated the whole "born to a west harborman swamp farmer" thing. Plus defending villages has never really been my thing. After I finally got to the town in NWN2 I was struck by how empty it felt, and found myself wishing there was more going on. The companions were boring and I didn't like any of them, save neeshka, which I believe you couldn't romance with. There was also a lack of capes and annoying combat voices.

I've always been a Conjurer, xbow + pixies always kill them annoying wizards good! Sadly warriors always one hit me with charges (Or deathrays from wizards if I'm naked)

No other classes get to summon ghosts and use force of nature/fist of vengeance to make hilarious kills

I also used to play my fathers old Spectrum as a kid, with the games on tapes that took FOREVER to load and all looked like complete shit, but there were some fun games on there like Bruce Lee.

hey um... hate to burst your bubble... but thats a picture of elder scrolls one, arena. Daggerfall is quite badass though.

probably one of the hardest game ever created , lots of thinking , The Real Strategy actually.
Not so sure about the hardest ever thing, it was fun, though.

empire earth was damm funny with editor, I remember a mission I made it was: save the pope... you spawn on an isaland with only priest, the pope, and some prophet (bishop) you need to kill everything! converting all ennemie army was lol! also one of the funniest IA ever: creating wall all over the place for no reason because you can just bypass it!

the settlers 1 and 2 not the crap they get out recently, the true settles with pixel sized ppl, with road all over tha place with flag to keep up, funny animation, and strange combat.

also battle chess, the game that make me love chess ( I still play even if computer is terribad and can be beaten rather easily in 20 first move you just got to get away from the book and he implode) this game practice my tactic all the time as i wanted to see all the piece animation for each other (took me long to checkmate with pawn in a natural way (aka no edit position thing).

warcraft 2 :D
old heroes of migth and magic, don't know wich one but my friend has it and I was soo impress.

worm: :D

prince of persia, because lovely

and that's all

Anyone tried Alpha Storm? It's something I only found a few month ago, but it was pretty interesting.

Looks like predecessor of E.Y.E Divine Cybermance.

How have I never heard of this game before? A space combat game where you can board the enemy ship and kill them all from a first person perspective? That sounds like my dream game.

Why is there so little information on the internet regarding this? Normally I can locate some gameplay videos for damn near any game, but not in this case.

There is a cool multiplayer mod for HL2 which involves both FPS shooter and space fighting components. Sadly, last time I've played it there were 3 people online (beside me).

Loved that game. Just in the last couple of day i got reminded of this. But then instead i picked up Master of Orion 2.
Played through it 3 times in the last days. Awesome game, if a little bit too short for my taste for an 4x-game...

I remember a game, in which you were put in a space shuttle and sent to outer space to look for some kind of planet I guess. But the thing was, at the beginning of the game, earth would explode and you were the only human left. I remember entering rooms and trying to find evidence of alien life. I also remember that game always made me worry if such a scenario would happen.

The only thing I can't remember is the name of the game :) It was mid 90's tho ...

+1, These games created the stealth-genre on their own, Thief was the first game with real stealth mechanics.
