I know doom has been mentioned, but that's not the most awesome oldschool game. It's actually Doom 2, because my brother and me could deathmatch that over a null-modem cable (and later over our coax network).

Our specialy edited version of the first map, named 'Go to hell' remained our most popular entertainment untill duke nukem 3d and quake 1 came along.

loginOne notable moment among the many hours of doom 2 (keyboard only) deathmatch: my introduction of the 'specially adapted' version of our favorite deathmatch map: i added secret rooms with controls to close doors, operate light and for the grand finale: boss monsters to appear. You know, the fat guys with the chainguns and the huge rocket shooting endboss. I can still hear the screams and shouts of indignation when i interrupted our deathmatch session to show the power of the mapmaker.
