Title: Project Asinus - revealed!
Post by: chadz on April 01, 2012, 12:02:51 am
Project Asinus is a spacegame we are creating as a group of independent game devs. But not just a simple spacegame, it's the most sandboxy spacegame you have ever seen, and hopefully unique for years to come.

First of all, there are no fixed spacecraft designs. Every spaceship is unique. Because you build it yourself. You place the engines and the cockpit yourself, you place doors, hallways and rooms, you place weapon batteries and life support systems yourself. Shield generators, stealth systems, hull design, cables, tubes - it's all up to you. You can design a freighter or a fighter, a battle cruiser or a carrier - or even an entire space station. Of course, a big spacecraft all by yourself is a bit boring. So you will form up in crews.

Crews can build and control spaceships together. Because you are not a spaceship - you are a person inside (and sometimes outside) a spaceship. You are the pilot, or the gunner, or the mechanic, or a soldier, or an engineer. Or a mixture of it all. Or whatever else you can think of. So your spaceship design matters, because it will be your base of operations. You can form up as a group of pirates in small fighters, or in a bigger multi-crew spaceship. A spaceship without someone handling it is as dangerous as an asteroid drifting through space.

This also means that spaceship fights are not limited to flinging missiles at each other - you can weld enemy spaceships open, board an enemy ship and simply kill the other crew directly.

There will be spacefights, trading, mining, crafting, fighting, newtonian spaceflight, pirating, player driven economics, changelogs, planets, hyperdrives, drama, mercy & lack thereof and last but not least: permadeath.

Does EVE let you design your own ships? Move inside them with other players? Ofc, there will always be a lot of similarities between space games, but they all have their own style :)

There is something off with this. I somehow feel it's too simple for an april fools' day prank. The last one was complex and properly faked, this one is just text. Putting up a text like this - chadz knew exactly no one would fall for it.

He either lost his way of trolling, or elevated it to an entirely new level.

I think its not a double-bluff. Its a triple-bluff.

He says he makes some spacegame - but in a way we dont believe him. (Bluff 1) | Now we think hes Bluffing the Bluff, since it is so obvious. And we start to think that he could really make that spacegame (Bluff 2) | But in reality he is just bluffing the bluff, what would be (Bluff 3).

Easy, huh? ;)

As an EVE player, only the build your own ship from scratch bit sounds similar (Though those ships are impractically expensive in EVE, but hey).

I would like to imagine this as with arrows and wardarts instead of lasers and missiles anyways. Also, imagine fighters couching people.

Anyone who wants to make giant penis shaped rockets and land them on the moon or put them into orbit http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/ (http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/)

This sounds like a dream game.

You see chadz trolled us last time, quite hard, so hard....
So now he thinks that if he announces some hardcore shit, we will think "Wait, he trolled us last time, and he did it again? So he is trolling us by making us think its a troll but it is actually real? OMG ITS REAL!" but we hide it behind "Hah nice one chadz" when deep down inside we are all hoping that we are being the fool.

Assuming this is not a troll post, as a HUGE fan of space simulators this sounds great.

I'd be surprised to see it happen though, spacegames are very expensive to run and make (Thats why egosoft wasnt done an MMO version of their X series of space games, which doesnt all that chadz posted, besides making your own ship - as in the shell, you do get your own parts and some modifications - and it also has perm death, but being a SP game, you just go back to your last 'save')

I've actually tried to get into the whole 4x elaborate game thing with Aurora, as advertised by Paul, but even as an advid Dwarf Fortress fan I've been unable to really get into it. There's really a limit to how much micromanagement people can take I think.

You tried X games ? I mean, the X series. The last one is X3:Terran Conflict. An x4 in space with FreeSpace-like 3D combat, industry, commerce and ship classes up to M1 ships that can haul several dozens of fighters. Oh yeah, a big open space and terrible quests. It's quite close to M&B SP.

Incidentally, the game described in the first post, April Fools joke or not, is identical to the game design I have been wanting to see someone make since roughly forever.

Just the concept of multi-crew ships is cool and I hope to see that some day.

My vision of it would be that you generally have "captains" and "crew" with crew slots being something that can be filled on the fly.  So a ship might not need a gunner 100% of the time but when the action starts, he can call for one and someone waiting for a crew slot to open can jump when needed.  Similarly, you could have boarding action where captains can call for boarding party crews to sign up when needed, versus sitting in room on the ship somewhere with your thumb up your butt waiting for the one time security personnel are actually needed.

Anyway, I hope someone makes that game one day.  The only multi-crew vehicles I ever see are in WW2 games.

*Switchable gravity generators. (Imagine the rage of the circling fighters beginning to get sucked into the hull! The tradeoff is that it will be a bitch to land in the hangars..)

*Engines that performs max only during supervision. (AKA il2)

*Autogenerated planets with autogenerated cities, shaft style. (like in incal!)

Of course you need to be very concentrated on your task and it can get boring fast, but imagine the awesomeness.

You could build up crews that become better the longer they play together, and after some weeks of playtime people will be good at it and awesome fights will come and go...

Well the engine technology could be particularly unstable, forcing the mechanic to switch between a large number of engines, having to do repairing minigames as fast and good as possible.

Which is more fun to play according to you?

I don't do virtual second jobs. Unless its a job that involves killing lots of people with guns, lasers or swords.

Since this wasn't posted during first of April, I assume I can make a proper question!

How will the ship building work technically? There is this one supposedly "minecraft in space" where you build ships from blocks in Minecraft style, and while it might be cool in theory, in practice it'd probably be a lot better if the parts you build your ships from would be bigger than that.

Like instead of building a fighter block by block, just add cockpit, wings, etc parts.

Well it really depends on the minigame itself.

But yeah I think it's better gameplay-wise an makes more sense in a sci-fi world if players are left with things that are a little harder for machines to do and more fun, like piloting and using turrets.

I don't do virtual second jobs. Unless its a job that involves killing lots of people with guns, lasers or swords.

Someone loves all those dumb omgpop games, so don't knock it!  Lots of people like being healers in MMORPGs and nothing is a dumber, simpler mini-game than watching bars and hitting "HEAL" over and over for hours.  (I'm not saying *I* like these things, just that lots of people apparently do because they keep playing them.)

I would envision the engineering game to be something more like managing a host of automated repair bots.  You need to adjust them and tell them what, in particular, to repair.  Otherwise they will just repair in some generic, probably not optimal order.

I also see "ship crew" as a number of positions that people can shift between freely.

That is 1 person can crew an entire ship by switching freely from station to station.  "Okay shoot some torpedoes now adjust the engineering to work on the shields now load some marines into a boarding shuttle now back to shoot some more torpedoes now turn the ship around..."  But ideally you'd probably want at least 2-3 people per ship to prioritize things.  And for boarding actions you would need some pool of ready players you could draw from as needed.  Maybe they could log in and man a random gun or engineering station until needed for boarding combat.  That's not any worse than standing in a shieldwall or hiding behind a tree waiting for that horse to ride by.

Incidentally, "tank driving" was always one of my favorite things to do in Planetside and WW2O.  You have to pick a good tactical position and sometimes haul ass.  I thought it was fun even if I didn't get a gun to shoot.  A dedicated "pilot" position would probably be plenty of fun.

WW2O is a good example of the type of multi-crewing I'm talking about too.  1 ship had something like 9 positions but you really didn't need someone manning the left-side .50 caliber MG full time.  3 people for the whole ship makes it like 90% functional.

I have to say I'm kinda disappointed............  :( I was hoping it would be a great new add-on for c-RPG that would put a big new thing into the mod system. Game sounds interesting, I suppose, but space-games aren't my type of thing......... I feel like they don't really turn out that great, but good luck to all the devs making it! I'll try it just for the sake of trying it.  :P Who knows, I might like it.

Playing DPS in most mmos isn't much better honestly. The biggest difference is that instead of looking at your party member bars you target an enemy and press your single target rotation mindlessly, or multitarget one if there are more enemies. Healers have to similiarily react to AoE damage, but regardless the playstyle is more reactive. Tanking on the other hand range from the most hectic job to the most boring job depending on the encounter. It's sad really, but that's what the healer-tank-dps gameplay will tend to cause on some fights. Of course nowadays in general there's always the "run away from fire"-thing too for all classes.

But yeah, I agree, if you make a potentially very boring thing FEEL like it's interesting and important, at least some people will do it. I mean, seriously, MMOs in general are hugely repetative and essentially extremely boring if you strip down the concept, yet there are millions and millions of people playing them because the concept brilliantly makes it seem like it's fun and interesting (at least for a while)

I'd promptly hold you at gun point and cackle as I force you to talk to her for weeks on end.

Ah but you see, I would refuse. I think the result would be that you would shoot her, because the moment neither of us was talking, well, she wouldn't be able to shut up. I think you would simply black out and wake up covered in boxxy blood.

... it was 'revealed' at beginning of this month - that is before 0x10c was revealed ...
and maybe you plan something that is called Project Asinus, for a longer time even, that wasn't a prank, with a forum some people don't know or have no access to (i for one haven't got a message, even though i submitted my mail with that invitation)

well done anyway, you confused some clueless dudes.

(click to show/hide)
maybe, and maybe you're just trolling effectively.

assumed you really mean this, great minds and all, if i would take it serious i would say:
yes, i like c-rpg, it's working somehow to get people to play it and therefore the many people make playing fun. but apart from being mainstream (prominent) it isn't really that shiny.
in comparison, i love vikingr. it has better mechanics, more immersion, it's more complex and therefore has more mature players ...
my point is: as you seem to be confident with Project Asinus, it should hit like us a bomb imo. i only see you trolling about it though.

if i wouldn't take you serious, i wouldn't actually care.

in reality i don't know enough about it and i remain reserved.

ENGAGE....now wheres my looms you promised? visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I thought this was an april fool's joke.. a troll even... I hope it's not a troll. I couldn't be arsed to read past page 4.

I mean, there has not been a really good space game since star control 2 and starflight/alpha flight. I mean really good, not the shite you kids get. Fuck eve too.

It's up there in the top games I'd like to make. Like one of 3.

I'd really like a nav computor something like Celestia.

http://www.shatters.net/celestia/
I hope you've seen that.

Spore really dropped the ball in the space act, all that trouble making a cool ship, then explore space - so you encounter many different races but they are one of 7 archetypes. So yes, I got to the center of the universe without dying. I had no desire to explore the hundreds of other worlds.. just to do the same ol same ol.

If you really are serious let me know, check my moddb, as I am working on a mecha project when not goofing off in cRPG.

I don't think the game will be about spaceships at all, and it would be nice if people would stop posting in this retarded topic. It was posted on April 1st, and everything he said can be applied on other genres, too:

- meeting strangers
- acting in sef defense
- robbing people without need of killing them
- cutting their escape routes
- dangerous world that can kill characters by itself
- characters

And he asked for a skill based shooter system and permadeath.

I guess it will be some kind of open world RPG-shooter, either in the western, postapocalyptic or some kind of SciFi (either settling on new planets or some kind of futuristic metropole with criminals and so on) setting. Although the dangerous world points mostly to new planets or postapocalypse.

er.. (i didn't want to open a new thread) what's the pop up about some project asinus that requires e-mail on crpg site?
i was browsing my characters after quite some time not playing, so i may have lost some news; is it some sort of verification on who's browsing the site? (and if so what happens if one refuses to enter the email?)

Not yet decided. We aren't even close to a private alpha yet, so this is just guesswork. But we might keep in the beginning to people who we believe can act within the rules of a (very basic) NDA.

I would say "Yupp, because you are french!", but I already made a racist comment against french people in my own thread, so I can't do it here, too. Would loose all the unseriousness if I would.

So: No, no one got mail yet. As chadz stated one page before:

Yes, Germans collaborating with the people who occupied their lands? That, like, totally never happened.

Wiki says:

Quote
Since the Second World War the term "Collaboration" acquired a very negative meaning as referring to persons and groups which help a foreign occupier of their country—due to actual use by people in European countries who worked with and for the chocolate chip cookie German occupiers. Linguistically, "collaboration" implies more or less equal partners who work together—which is obviously not the case when one party is an army of occupation and the other are people of the occupied country living under the power of this army.

I meant the collaboration with the historic connotation. We chocolate chip cookies always ejoyed the non-gorilla races wanting to collaborate.

Oh, so just WW2 then? How convenient. I guess just post WW2 when German elites and scientists and other high profile chocolate chip cookie party members "collaborated" with the Americans and the Soviets that split their country in two was totally different. Not even going to go any further back, too many fucking examples strewn throughout european history. I guess they don't have the right "connotations" though.

Fixed

Project Asinus is a spacegame large content addition for C-rpg we are creating as a group of independent game devs. But not just a simple spacegame addition, it's the most sandboxy spacegame addition to C-rpg you have ever seen, and hopefully unique for years to come.

First of all, there are no fixed spacecraft fief or castle designs. Every spaceship fief is unique. Because you build it yourself. You place the engines and the cockpit yourself buildings farms and fences, you place doors, hallways and rooms, you place weapon batteries and life support systems cool medieval shit yourself. Shield generators Walls, stealth systems Tunnels, hull Keep design, cables, tubes - it's all up to you. You can design a freighter or a fighter trade town or military garrison, a battle cruiser or a carrier big ass castle - or even an entire space station City. Of course, a big spacecraft City all by yourself is a bit boring. So you will form up in crews.

Crews can build and control spaceships Medieval developments together. Because you are not a spaceship Medieval development - you are a person inside (and sometimes outside) a spaceship castle, city, town. You are the pilot lord, or the gunner man at arms, or the mechanic blacksmith, or a soldier, or an engineer. Or a mixture of it all. Or whatever else you can think of. So your spaceship medieval development design matters, because it will be your base of operations. You can form up as a group of pirates in small fighters raping caves, or in a bigger multi-crew spaceship hall of pederasty. A spaceship fief without someone handling it is as dangerous as an asteroid drifting through space.

This also means that spaceship fights are not limited to flinging missiles at each other - you can weld enemy spaceships open break enemy walls down, board an enemy ship enter the keep and simply kill the other crew directly.

There will be spacefights sieges, trading, mining, crafting, fighting, newtonian spaceflight, pirating, player driven economics, changelogs, planets kingdoms, hyperdrives night riders, drama, mercy & lack thereof and last but not least: permadeath visitors can't see pics , please register or login
