That's actually not true IMO, i quote a post (not mine) , personally i haven't played both rugby and American football like this guy i quoted, i've played only rugby.

"I've played football and rugby, and they are two completely different sports. American football is played at high speed intervals with the potential for far greater consistency and severity of hits. The style in which rugby is played just doesn't allow for the big, high speed, open field hits you see in football (at least not nearly as often). Plus, football is a "sprint" where rugby is more  an endurance sport.  The moral of the story: if you play American football without padding/helmets, some people would probably die.

They're both tough sports, just very different. You need to actually understand and play football to appreciate the need for the pads"

I add that in rugby tackling above the shoulder is illegal (for obvious reasons), i dunno if it's the same in American football.
I think i wouldn't enjoy playing American football, there are too many breaks( even in rugby there are many breaks Imo), and if i'm not wrong (i think ) the players roster completely changes, depending on whether the team is in a defensive or offensive phase.

On the other hand  i enjoy  watching American football, Imo it's more tactical than rugby.

Please highlight where I said "general view". Based on perception, particularly that of the people around my locale.

problem with that tenne is its just two NFL teams playing each other in London. Its the same thing as say Liverpool vs West ham only playing in chicago :p

I was unaware that Britain even had one American football team let alone more and I'm also making the assumption that unlike "Liverpool" and "West Ham" the players in either team are British & American respectively. Hence the idea that the two countries are going up against each other, maybe not with their best players (and my personal reference for Britain vs America in the football was the Olympics, which also didn't have Britain's top players because they're a bunch of money grabbing gits.)

I'm under the assumption that not a lot of Brits are really in the top leagues, being traded between clubs and what not. Then again, I have no vested interest in the sport so I genuinely can only speculate from my localised perception but I would be interested in the outcome to see how badly the British side gets thrashed.

Oh, and for reference too, I'm five foot six/seven inches tall, I wouldn't last five minutes in either sport! ;) - I suppose I should mention that alongside my height, I am not built for a heavy sport like that, I don't run fast, I can move short distances (around a badminton court) quickly but not down the wing or anything like that :P

Yes, i know you didn't say that, i just wanted to say my opinion about rugby and American football, sorry i should have specified that i wasn't referring to you, but to the general opinion of the people about American football. (i mean that (imo) the people are wrong if they consider A.football as a Rugby version for pansies)

Tenne didn't say it was true, just said that it's a common view. You know how people like having opinions about things they've never seen ;D

Rugby isnt exactly the safest sport though, even if you think American football hits harder.

Yes absolutely, i have played Rugby (amateur level) and i know you don't receive or give  caresses.
Well, maybe tackles in American football are generally  harder, but in Rugby the 15 players of a team play for 80 minutes (unless they get substituted), and there are more breaks in A.football, also considering the fact that the players roster changes if the team is in an attacking or defensive phase(correct me NA crpg  players if i'm wrong), so at the end i consider Rugby and A.footbal to be equally tough sports.

I think far more people like it in London/England than you might realize. I mean, 65k people ponied up that insane(350 I think? Euros) and they were all European. I'd say the interest is there...

But, like I said, it's one of the very few contact sports out there, I mean I've seen some shitty stuff in soccer about the penalties cause people "trip." That's why Non contact sports are lame at times. Shit like that makes me angry.(Of course, every sport has it's "I DO THIS CAUSE I CAN" and makes it Lame shit...)

There were several brits there at the games. At least 1 guy from Iceland, 1 dude from Scotland(they were interviewed before time and I saw it)..

Bah that sucks. :(

I'm sure there are, but they're in the minority for sure. Also, football seems to be breeding this sort of "dive culture" as you say, it's silly and it certainly ruins the sportsmanship of the game. It's one reason I prefer Rugby refereeing, his word is law & only the captain can speak to them, it certainly keeps a more civil tone about things, I hope they do something like that in American football too.

Don't get me wrong when I say that not a lot of people like it, I mean I don't exactly speak for all 63/64 million Brits, as much as I would like to think I do! ;)

I do love that kind of stuff in sport, surely there are some in American Football? It'd be great to see some! :D

Nope.  Our overpayed crybabies probably couldn't be bothered with performances like that unless they were handed bags of cash on a per-performance basis.

Yup. But all the rules are laid out. You don't do: X Y Z(or at least if you do, don't get caught). Most of the Refs(and there's like, some 15) can call the penalty. There's a Head Ref who reads and then discusses it, but once he makes the Call, it's done, unless the Head Coach challenges it(of which they get only 1 chance per 30 minutes), or it's under one of the "Review" clauses(IE Controversial enough) that means it's automatically reviewed.

Players can't argue it, but you'll see them try and go: "WTF CALL THAT" moves sometimes. Sometimes they get it(and deservedly) but mostly they don't when players make the motion for it.

Nothing like the video in US Football. Though, during halftime, there will be a show and some spectator type events if you want to watch em for 20 minutes. They do have SOME stuff that the Mascots do during games. Funny, cause the Jaguars, while sucking, have one of the best mascots in the league. He's fuking crazy. He's done some shit that I'm like: WTF! Parachuting into the stadium, zip lining from the top of the stadium lights, he's even been thrown out of the game for physically taking shit from the opposing team at times. It's Hilarious.

College football, though has stuff similar to that. My local team, the Florida State Seminoles, actually has a horse and a Seminole Indian Ride into the stadium and plant a spear into the ground and he does a war chat or some such. This stuff isn't televised, but if you go, you get to see it.

Nope.  Our overpayed crybabies probably couldn't be bothered with performances like that unless they were handed bags of cash on a per-performance basis.

The players don't, but the mascots and others usually do. The players play, the mascots...well screw with the opposing team and have fun with fans.

No, I didn't. I stated exactly what happens. The players will not do that, but the mascot of the home team(or both) will do something(It could be just as awesome as that, or not, it depends really). Unless it's pretty amazing, it's not televised.

It's not done to "mess with the other team." It's a Maori tradition that the New Zealand rugby team incorporates. Yes, you missed the point of the video.

Also, the NFL mascots don't do shit to the other team. They are there for drunken twats to abuse and get a few laughs out of.

All very well but do you get this in American football:

No they would throw a flag and penalize the team doing it, though it would have to occur during the game i believe, which kind of doesnt relate considering this was before the game, and seems tradition.

also we have chicks that do it for us:

Well the Army-Navy game apparently has a tradition on the sidelines of pulling big antics on one another, with games and gags off the field as well.  I was told they had men dressed up in ghillie suits trying to crawl to the other teams benches to steal some sort of flag, or mascot or something.  And that they are probably the best games to get to see.

I know about college football antics but again the point of the haka is not meant to be funny antics or something to intimidate the other team with.

It's a Maori tradition, while used as a warning before battles, is also done as a sign of respect and is performed for guests and during cultural celebrations. New Zealand has a strong tradition of integrating their indigenous population and this is just another example of it.

Although to be perfectly honest I'd shit my pants if I saw a 250 lb Maori man do that in front of me.
