Yes, it is. I didn't say GTAIII copied everything. But before GTAIII came this was the only game I know set in a modern age with full 3D graphics. It does look like GTAIII a lot in certain aspects, especially the way you interact with pedestrians and their reactions.

Levels in that game aren't that small, some are half the size of starting GTAIII area (Portland or whatever it's called).

Did you play GTAIII when it came out in 2001? I was 15 years old back then and game was forbidden in many countries and was rated M (18+). No one cared about that in Serbia. You were 11 year old when GTAIII came out, amirite? And 9 years old when Urban Chaos came out :)

I was about 15 too in 2001, GTA3 was fucking awesome compared to that piece of shit game Urban Chaos. The basics of GTA3 were already created in GTA2 and inspired by GTA1.

Personally no. I had loads of other games before GTA3. AoE2, Diablo 3 and Red Alert 2 where my main games back then. Also I have rather fond memories of the first "Medal of Honor". Too bad the franchise itself cant keep up with the times thou... I should seriuslly stop derailing........

And tbh GTA3 really was revolutionary. And not at all only cause it was one of our first games.

I've been playing PC games since about 1994, played the obvious console games before that, GTA3 was certainly not "one of the first video games I played" and certainly not the first decent game, it was a good game and a very solid product.

12 would be correct. It wasn't anywhere near one of my first PC games, probably due to the fact that i had a shitty PC back then.

Claiming that it copied Urban Chaos, because it too has an urban setting with cars and pedestrians is more than a bit far-fetched. Especially, when it wasn't even the first game in it's series. It's just the first one in it's series, that went full 3D, with a (for that time) HUGE world to explore more or less freely, whilst being able to both drive, run and shoot in it.

If anything, the closest you get to a predecessor to it was Driver - it had a few more or less free-roaming levels you could drive around and it often involved police chases and whatnot. In Driver 2 you could also leave your vehicle and run around on foot.

Original Grand Theft Auto was among first games I've played on PC and I have very fond memories of it (along with Jedi Knight, Age of Empires, Quake II, Duke Nukem 3D, MDK, Diablo, Daggerfall).

As I said, it is the only game I remember that had resemblance to GTAIII that came out before GTA did. There were no games like that, most 3D games in late 90s had fantasy and Sci-fi setting. I've played first and second GTA but couldn't imagine how GTAIII would look like before I saw it with my own eyes. Only somewhat similar game was Urban Chaos. 2D GTA and 3D GTA have so many differencies, basic gameplay is the same but there are no  small details in 2D version that we all loved in GTAIII and in newer games.

Another "revolutionary" video game was Codename Eagle. Believe it or not, it was the first 3D shooter where you could control vehicles in somewhat realistic manner which wasn't fantasy or sci-fi game. Later, the studio that made that game became part of Electronic Arts today known as DICE.

Driver is more like Midtown Madness type of game. You drive a car around and perform missions.

Oh, yes. Carmageddon!  And Shenmue was a masterpiece too. I never got a PS 1, but bought a Dreamcast and I just loved that game. It was revolutionary. Another nice "similar" 3D action game I loved was Kingpin: Life of Crime.

This new GTA must be like IV but better, so I have good hopes.

By the way, I was 18 back then too! =)

I remember playing a midtown madness demo (awesome father was into videogames until he reached the late thirties), I was less than 10

Game was amazing but kinda hard for me back then.

What about Shenmue?

It's Dreamcast game. I've tried it couple of times at friends house but never played it. It is famous for introducing Quick Time Events into video games.

@Kafein: Midtown Madness was a great game, I played it using some Thrustmaster racing wheel. It was quite epic experience at that time.

Anyway, back on topic (just talk and pictures):

I know what Shenmue is. I was asking why GTA3 is considered revolutionary, when everything it offers has been done before in other games.

It seems though that I have misunderstood the meaning of revolution. I looked it up, and must agree that the impact GTA3 had on the gaming world fits the description pretty well. What I miss is the lack of innovation, but this is not necessary for a revolution.
