Title: Looking for Wurm Online buddies
Post by: Necrorave on June 05, 2013, 03:14:29 pm
I really enjoy the Game Wurm Online, as may some of you.  Although, most of my group that I was playing with before had given up on the land.  I was left alone to do everything which made the game very boring to play at times.

I am basically looking for people to play with.  I wish to play on the PVP cluster known as Epic.  I am at a fresh start but not a new player (Since I traveled by portal from my homeland known as Pristine in Freedom)  So I do not have anything in particular to offer at the moment.  Although, I wish to either join up with an already existing village of some sort or perhaps group up to make one.  As long as I have some people to play with.

I would prefer NA players due to the fact that I know some of you.  Although, any EU players are appreciated as well.

Thanks

It's actually life to me, and to everyone else it is a game.  What I am pretty much trying to say is, I have no friends.

Cereal: 4 posts is more like it.  It is just a Sandbox MMO where almost EVERYTHING is player created and maintained.  Imagine EVE Online but fantasy rather then Sci-fi

Wurm online.. more like grind online. The grind is so bad there's at least 4 different skills to level for walking.

Ok not that bad but its tedious. How can you like that? I liked the idea behind it but damn dude.

I'm a self made man.

Yeah I don't think I could ever enjoy it without friends, it'd be terrible. But setting up a little village with friends was rather fun. Seeing our houses come to be and such. Plus the grind is pretty big, but with all the things we had to do in the beginning I never really noticed it, the skills were sort of just going up and I was just doing what needed to be done, so that part worked out rather well.

Just talking about it makes me miss it.

I am on Epic (Mol Rehan). I used to play with Templols and always abused them in some ways. I had so much fun but they quit. Plz join Mol Rehan. I need people to piss off and abuse.

I was actually thinking of joining Mol Rehan.  Although, if I get Applesauce to go with me then I may not need to join up with anyone.  Although, if anyone wishes to come along make it known.

Wurm online was a lot of fun, but the skill gain is ridiculous, and don't bother trying to fight anything (run like hell and avoid like hell).  You can't get over a certain skill level unless you pay money (which was okay with me, I liked the game enough to pay some money).  I was really into the terraforming and setting up a little civilization, but the skill gains were way too slow for me to keep playing more than a month or two.

Yeah I can understand that, probably subconsciously was part of the reason I stopped as well. But I played on a PvE server. I'm gonna give it another go this weekend with Necro and we're gonna try starting anew on the PvP server, I hear the skill gain is increased quite a bit there, plus killing other players should make things rather interesting.

I would have joined you guys (and asked my bro and a couple other crpg guys who originally played it with me to join) but I'm going to give State of Decay a try tonight and I'm sure I'll be playing that all weekend.

The Epic cluster apparently has a lot of crazy things going on in it plus 2x exp.  The best part for me (In my opinion) is the fact that the developers tell you the new mechanics and fixes in updates, but do not tell you if they added a new thing In game.  A lot of the stuff is player researched.  You may discover something new yourself and end up making "History".  That and you can make IG currency and pay for your premium.  So in a way, the game is pretty much free.

Yeah actually saw that too. Would love to try that as well but I really don't like playing Xbox anymore lol. Plus with getting back into Wurm, playing c-RPG again, getting into Neverwinter, and doing a playthrough of Stalker, plus dealing with finals, I really don't have time to get into anything else, let alone barely have time for the games I play now. Probably will give it a shot when it gets a bit cheaper and I'm less stressed for free time. Let me know how it is!  :D

Aw yeah!

Its fun but be wary there are a few bugs in the game that definitely can hurt you severely. IE: survivors dying and their stuff falling through floor/ground, too many infestations problem (huge morale drain) that takes into account infestations globally and not any near your home base, and some issues with survivors/zed getting stuck in walls and etc.

Most of the major problems are being fixed with a patch next week. So if you haven't started, you could wait or just start now and get the hang of it and if you are ok with those problems (they are manageable) then keep on keeping on.

I already had a problem with my first survivor getting stuck in the bed of an overturned pickup (tried to jump across a broken bridge) luckily i was able to restart before it saved :D  I'm being very careful with every risk I take (other than the jump)

Play on Epic. Skill gain is faster and effective skill is higher than your actual skill.

I think this needs a revive.

I didn't realise anyone other than Vinnie played until I was scared for my life hunting raiders with him & saw a name I recognised in the kingdom chat. It's good to know there were/are some people who play it as well and coincidentally belong to the same kingdom!

Certainly up for doing a bit of trade/helping people out if they have anything needing doing.

I think I can safely say that at least 6 of us play.

I was gonna try this out as some of the features look pretty cool, but after watching videos of the pvp it looks like one of the most awkward and boring looking PvP systems I've ever seen, clicking through drop down menus and waiting for timers to complete attacks. Sadly I don't enjoy many games that dont have reasonably decent PvP. I can imagine myself feeling like I did when I played Minecraft, bored.

Maybe I will give it a try.

The combat is a bit boring when it comes down to action.  Although, the whole plot of the game is to advance.  If they added Twitch combat it would take away the power of those who spent the time to advance and become a powerful warrior or perhaps even champion.  I personally like this system for a game like Wurm.

It can create this whole sense of "Don't mess with this guy" because he has been training since day 1.  It actually rewards players for their time rather than personal skill, yet the process to becoming that powerful is slow enough where not many have accomplished it.

By reasonably decent I didnt mean twitch combat, I meant anything better than navigating a drop down menu everytime you want to attack and then waiting for some kind of progress bar for the action to even happen. Just looks awkward and slow, it is like a prehistoric terrible version of the general hotkey targeting mmorpg. Being able to set the combat actions to hotkeys AND the combat actions happening there and then with a cooldown, would generally make the pvp less terrible, IMO that is.

The drop down menu for melee is merely the direction you want to attack.  Special moves have inductions though.

The rest is automatic and timed.  Weapons have different speeds.  (I swing every 3 seconds)

The drop down is not as complicated as it looks honestly.  Although, ranged combat is more complicated then it needs to be, I can agree with that much.

If you're playing WURM for the PVP (or even PVM) you're doing it wrong.

It's super fucking tedious as it is to get your skills up.  You think crpg is a massive grind?

The PVP and fighting in general is fucking terrible.  That's why I say if you're playing WURM for the PVP/PVM you're doing it wrong.

I personally enjoy and look for games that have open world PVP and no instances (have to compete for resources).  That being said, WURM is fun, but not for the PVP or PVM.  It's also really tedious to get skills up or to build things/terraform.  But if you're a meth addict or have absolutely nothing to do with your time, it's a fun game.

If the skill gain was about 4 times faster than what it is now, it would be a lot better.

Crazy probably played in the Home Servers of PvP.  Where the battles are rare and raids are usually quick sneak attacks.  The PvP is a bad grind, but once you get there you can do whatever you wish.  Just because Crazycracka never had experiences with PvP does not mean they don't exist.

In the PvP cluster there is a middle server that Everyone is fighting for control on.  The "Skilled" and well trained players go there after spending time on the Home server leveling up their abilities.  Nonetheless, PvP can be accomplished anywhere.  I had to scare off some new player from stealing my crops.  I only hit hit twice before he ran off, but the freedom of PvP is always there.  The "Battles" are just more common elsewhere.

It all comes down to if you like slow paced sandbox games.  I do, so I enjoy it.  Others may not, why else would you think I have a hard time finding people to play with? ;p
Title: Re: Looking for Wurm Online buddies
Post by: Tennenoth on October 24, 2013, 07:08:13 pm
It's certainly a game that requires friends to truly enjoy.

I play alongside four other people who each have their favoured skill set that they put the most time into, for example, VincentRuth is very much the blades & armour smith alongside a high quality mason (building houses and walls etc), I'm a leatherworker & bowyer and all of us have fighting/hunting skills to defend what we own.

The combat is very much like a first person old style RPG, such as Baldur's Gate. So sort of D&D in essence. You have skills, you have equipment & that all adds up to percentage chances to do things, such as block with your shield, parry with your sword or land a hit with your maul. Each individual weapon has it's own skill set alongside an overarching weapon type skill. (Same for quite a few skills really)

All those skills add up to give you your ability to fight, so when you initiate combat, you do have a few options, and more when you increase in those skills, but for example, I am 70 fighting skill (so I have hit a reasonable level over my four months of play) so I have the ability to choose where to attack in a compass type way, and I can do "special" moves dependent on where I am choosing to attack. For example I can do a flourish of light attacks to help stop the opposition from doing a their own special (interrupt) or I could simply pommel strike them in the ribs to make them lose stamina, and therefore fight less efficiently.

It's not a "basic MMO" type of combat, it's very much a take on D&D I feel.

On the rest of the stuff, it can be quite tedious, such as the skill grinding, repeating actions & it can really make you think about macroing, but the best way to sort of ignore that is to either do it in short bursts, or do something else at the same time. I personally have youtuber/tv playing on 2/3 of my screen while the other 1/3 is my Wurm client with all the items laid out in the most click efficient manner.

As someone previously said, most of the world is player made, entire cities to the smallest of villages have been created by players, the land has been shaped by them to accommodate their ideas. I personally love the sense of achievement of seeing a hilly area become a flat plane let alone before you've built what you want there.

I was lucky enough to be taken in by the Templars when I first started, they took me from the spawn, they gave me armour & set me on my way to being useful to them. I would do the same for anyone who wants to play too.

What Kingdom you in Tenne?

EDIT: After reading some peoples older posts I am guessing Mol Rehan, going to that homeland to start fucking about and seeing what I can do lol.

EDIT2: After playing for a little while and learning some basic stuff, I am actually kinda having fun :P. Even though the fighting is so massively basic, it was fun stabbing some guy to death who had the HUNTED thing on his name after he attacked another player for no reason. Though I am having a hard time foraging cotton and have half my health gone to a severe spider bite wound lol.

I've never actually tried this game because I heard about the atrocious grind and I once watched a video of the "combat" in this game, which made chess look like quake.

I've heard it still has some redeeming features, but what I don't understand is why play this over haven & hearth or salem? seems to have simular (but better?) features.

Mol Rehan - Desertion - Epic

That should be it.

Yeah, I think Vinnie is looking to take people in now that we have a settlement set up, I would much prefer people that I already know so, that's my preference, I'm sure Vinnie will be fine with it (I shall check of course since he lived there first) so if we're online, I might as well head to the spawn and pick up people who fancy playing. I'm sure we could build a boarding house since we're clearing a lot of space.

I'll check with Vinnie first of course, I don't want to alienate him more than I already did about 20 minutes ago! (He'll know what I'm talking about).

Anyway, dying when you're new shouldn't matter that much, I'm still undefeated... I expect Vince Truth  will be the one to end me first though.

Well I'll be quite happy just to have a box to put shit in and some people to play with and show me the ropes a bit, I would quite happily work towards building my own house etc.

EDIT: I managed to bandage my severe wound but people are saying it will eventually kill me if I don't get a decent healing cover on it... man just seems like I'd have been better off dying instead of wasting money and time lol.

EDIT2: Someone told me to make healing covers, which I managed to do so out of bear tooth and herbs I found and I managed to treat the wound on 3rd attempt, thank fuck for that.

bear tooth you "found".

You thieving fuck!

God damn you guys are starting to make me interested in playing again, this is not acceptable.  There's lots of NA strat battles tonight, but I might be able to talk to some guys I used to play with and see if they want to get back into it tomorrow.

Banok a game like this is much more able to terraform than a game like haven and heart, or Salem.  It's not a top level "rogue" game either.   It's a really really in depth game.  Depending on where you are on the world map there's different types of plants and trees and animals.  You can dig down quite deep into the earth.  You literally level the ground (which affects the tiles next to you).  It can be pretty hard to make a "flat" piece of land more than like 10x10 tiles, even if you start with relatively flat terrain.

As with everywhere else, I am named "Tennenoth" so /tell me if you're online. I'll come and pick you up and incur the wrath of Mr Truth at a later date when he is online.

A couple of screenshots of our small area, we've got plenty of farm land to keep an entire city alive (stockpiled something like 1,700 potatoes & 900 pumpkins so...) Everything is very much a work in progress since "we" are flattening the area in order to get more land to build on, so some things are looking a little worse for wear where they've been smacking about & moved. We're getting there, we're in land far enough so you we can't be seen from the rivers edge and our neighbours are good people.

Well, if you ignore the bloody youtuber who has set up across the river from us... He attracts a lot of attention... His village members are indoctrinated by him far too heavily & seem to think it's alright to bugger up other peoples stuff because their youtube master will pay his way to sorting things out.

Other than that, plenty of room and a nice place to live. We have a forest for easy food, we have a desert for fighting skill training & we are on a small island that not a lot of people visit. It's picturesque really.

I may have also pulled a few strings and got the place named "Halmar"... So ignore that! ;)

Looks awesome Tenne!, What times and days/night are you usually on? I probably wont get much time over the weekend, only a couple hours on an evening or two, but I'll be around all day Tuesday day and then probably all evening and night on Friday.

My name was LeeUK, but the game made it Leeuk . I have got myself a large wooden shield and a couple of Longswords, I have been cutting down trees with the 60ql one and keeping my 80ql Longsword for fighting stuff. I also want start mining stuff so I should be able to help you guys gather resources even if I can't make much just yet.

I'm gonna be on now for about an hour and a half but that's it so perhaps have to wait for either Tuesday or one evening next week.

Varies quite wildly depending on my Uni schedule but I am usually on after 5/6pm UK time (GMT right now I believe). Chances are I'll be on most of this evening because I've been ill all week, and I'll probably be online a lot of Saturday too. (Made me sound like I was planning to be ill tomorrow too.)

Yeah, 80ql longsword is a good "find"! We'll put you to work down in one of our numerous mines though, no worries on that one.

We have plenty of pigs, cows & bulls that you can punch.

I've run it by Vinnie as well, he is happy for people to come across, he says I can perma-ban you if you misbehave so, you know.

You've not got much to worry about, I don't play games to be a douchebag. Oh wait, I'm a Horse Archer in cRPG, I have no valid argument.  :D

But yeah, I am well behaved and I would like to think at least reasonably mature, at least being 27 years of age I hope I am , but I've been in the Fallen Brigade since it was about 2 weeks old and I've never been in the bad books so to speak. You've got nothing to worry about.

I know! I wasn't being serious, they'd have my head anyway! :P

Erm... Hard to explain since they're similarly skill focused but there is certainly a lot of differences. I mean, besides the 3D aspect, you've got far more skills, you level up those skills by doing things, not waiting for curious to tick by.
I think those are the major differences to start off with, I mean you've got your usual terraforming (much more towards what Salem tried to do) but you also have things like world events that happen, much better on Epic, as long as a meteor or a God doesn't take a particular disliking towards you and your deed...

Although I must admit it is hilarious to be following someone as a mission is completed and have the God suddenly decided "fuck you in particular" and spawn five giant... "things" on top of your friend. That yelp of both surprise and fear I shall never forget, talking about what we should do when we get back to the settlement, sudden lightning strike & a flash of light, yelp of friend as he disappears from view behind the giant mobs.

Or the champion eagle spirit that I ran through a settlement by mistake that then proceeded to kill off all the inhabitants simply because they couldn't keep up with my horse... I ran straight to Vinnie typing frantically about a giant ghost eagle eating "The Germans". We ran between guard towers as this thing ate it's way around our island. The damned thing had this awful ability to wing buffet and launch players from their horses. Christ, where people ended up while fighting was ridiculous.

Anyway...

Got an email, wish I had more time to actually play games so I could check this out:

Quote
On Thursday 10/4 at 22.00 hrs CEST we will test a Mega Sized Server and want you to help us out! The size we are testing is 16 times the size of our current largest servers. That's pretty badass.

Our current largest servers are 16×16 kilometers, and this new map is 64×64 kilometers, or 4096 square kilometers, non-instanced, single zone fully modifiable, living terrain!

We want to see how many players can be on the server simultaneously and see how bad the lag gets on the client and server under heavy load. There will also be 50 000 creatures roaming the wilderness (which is a fairly low population in Wurm terms).

NO REGISTRATION WILL BE REQUIRED FOR JOINING THE TEST! You will just have to type in your desired nickname and a random password and click play once we provide the link to the client used for the test.

Apart from the fact that no other MMO has ever launched a modifyable map of this size, running this many players in one game zone is pretty unusual in itself and will be an interesting experience. We strongly suggest you join in.

We will livestream the event on www.twitch.tv/codeclub.

In case all goes well we’ll consider releasing the server within a few weeks after some more testing and tweaking.

We will post a link to the game client used for these tests on our launcher and in the news section of the web site approximately half an hour before the test goes live. Note that this test will last approximately one hour and the server will be made unavailable afterwards and the database will probably be wiped.

Hope you can make it!
