Not that they break very fast,
the main Problem is, that even a Guy who is 45 Degree in Front of u can pass your Shield at your sides...
With a Huscarls... thats rediculous. A Manual Block still blocks every Hit from the direction the Hit comes...
More love for Shielders pls.
-
I wasn't aware they changed anything to shields.
-
l2p
and I'm saying that as a shielder main.

Watch your facing.

Nope. Not if you're turned slightly too far.
I main 1H & shield. They are perfectly fine. In my opinion easy-mode blocking is good enough as it is. Giving 180 degrees of coverage would just make it ridiculous.
-
The time to Block also got nerfed.
My Huscals is raising much slower. Also the recovertime is bad.
Also Arrows Passing like there is no shield...

The raising and lowering of shields has absolutely nothing to do with whether a shield blocks or not. When your shield actually "blocks" depends on the shield speed. Some shields block before the shield is fully raised some block after it is fully raised. The Huscarl is VERY slow. If your shield skill is too low, you may run into problems.
The forcefield of shields got nerfed a LONG time ago and rightly so. Shields being an arrow magnet was always dumb. Instead of your shield grabbing every arrow around you you need to point it at the archer and raise or lower it depending on whether they are going for your head or feet. Easy enough.

Although it sounds reasonable, this makes a shield useless against anything + an archer. Furthermore, in some cases arrows go through the shield because the coverage is smaller than the model. Having a shield already means being superslow and thus easily killed by shieldless melee, it should offer some real protection against projectiles.
-
cant say ive noticed any diff from this patch in regards to my shield.
-
Sorry I'm convinced that 1h shield is the best class in game. If you are getting hit by melee you either need to buy a shield with faster shield speed, put more skill points into shield, or (most likely) work on positioning a bit more.
Besides I don't think shield 'block range' got nerfed at all... I did notice some shields got lower shield speed, but meh.
-

because the patch didn't touch shields at all except for slot usage.

Exactly. All of this is old news. Happened a LONG time ago. Shielders are fine. Move along.
-
can't use my heavy kite shield on horse w/ heavy lance and italian sword because it's two slots.
First they nerf shields so hoplites cant bring a sword, now even lancers can't have a shield? :|
-
You can have a shield, there is many 1slot shields. But you can´t have the best one, you have to make choice, working as intended, this is the hybridslot law...

Naa, it is not. You got hits from weird angles, which should have been blocked.

Could be lag, or the aforementioned shield speed. Also it depends on the shield. From what I've heard, for blocking is based on the actual shield model.
-
I have a CAV guy with a 1 handed wep, shield and heavy lance so no idea how u guys can t use it, my guess is that ur special or something.
And i use 1 hander shielder as secondary mode and do fine at it.

ya real easy mode if your. getting cut down easier then a gazelle in a lions den.

hey do me a favor and just look at the scoreboards next time bud. when was the last time you saw a 109- 17 sword and boarder
-

You may be terrible, but that doesn't make it broken. 1-handers got a HUGE buff with this latest patch even. If you know what you are doing, you can be ridiculously powerful as a shielder.
1-handers are overall the fastest weapons in the game and now it's incredibly rare that you glance. Not to mention that you get a shield which blocks EVERYTHING from your front facing. How is this bad?
-
because the patch didn't touch shields at all except for slot usage.
lol these devs cant even write 50% accurate patchnotes, you think they would tell you they nerfed something?
I"m a lifelong shielder and I've noticed some sort of change. I'm getting hit by people from 60° degrees to my sides and being hit around my board shield. I'm pretty sure they changed something
-

This is a wild guess, but I'm going to throw it out here. What if it's because it is harder to glance?
For example, pre-patch, someone swings on your flank. The haft of the weapon hits the shield at the same time the sweet spot hits you. This causes the weapon to slow down and causes a glance.
Post-patch, same thing happens, but since it's harder to glance, it connects and does damage?
Anyway, that's just my crazy rambling for the night.
-
Naa, it is not. You got hits from weird angles, which should have been blocked.
Yes, that happens, and what is worse, sometimes the guy will put his model inside yours and will hit you coz his swing begins behind the shield.. cheap and weird.....

That bug is old though...
-
I've been getting hit from the sides quite a lot lately, but I assumed that was just due to me having 4 shield skill. I don't think they actually changed anything about shields in this patch aside from slots.
-

Pretty much this. My 4 Shield skill Knightly Kite Shield user is still having to have perfect footwork, and my 5 Shield skill Huscarl has a forcefield. Seems normal.
-
I had this before the latest patch as well.
At first i thought it had something to do with the buckler, but then i had the same issue with the bigger round shields, too.
These are my two major "wth" moments.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
1.) This happens sometimes, if i try to get past someone at a quite close distance. Could be a clipping issue, because i have this sometimes against extreme facehuggers as well.
2.) Here i have no clue. The opponent stands at my side and performs a wide swing, which goes through my shield and hits me.
Maybe it is the same think like with the kicks.
The others say that they have hit me, while i have seen them miss.
Anyway, my main gripe is still, that my shield becomes non-existent when i release the right mouse button. I whish that there would be something like a negative block delay.
-

This would be cool, only if manual blocking carried the same bonus.

I've never seen you in game before, but you must not be the best of players. I do just fine on my sword/shield main.

this!

Which BUFF!? What the FUCK!!!
- We are hit from rediculous angles from guys which are in front of us.
- Recover Time is slower IMHO.
- Shield Sizes got Nerfed. .... my Huscarls is only 84!! it was 100! It cover like shit now.
- Shielding is slower than before
We got no where a buff. No more speed. No more reach. No Shieldbash....*lol. I even feel slower because weight of the Huscalrs
seems to be a bigger burden now, i think the Movementspeed/Weight-Formula got changed...
Troll somewhere else please. You got no clue how we got nerfed with the last Version!
-
Pretty much this. My 4 Shield skill Knightly Kite Shield user is still having to have perfect footwork, and my 5 Shield skill Huscarl has a forcefield. Seems normal.
I got a build with 7 in Shield.
I noticed a very big difference!
-
Perhaps the Sats of the Huscarls are broken and i feel that crippled because of this...
From the c-rpg Website:
Huscarl's Round Shield
weight: 9
body armor: 20
difficulty: 5
hit points: 400
speed rating: 80
shield width: 42
Can't use on horseback
The Size is only 42. That would explain a lots...
Well, if the number is doubled for the calculation it would be okay...
Just thinking ....
-
Which BUFF!? What the FUCK!!!
The fact that there is much less chance of glancing. Previously, 2 handers did so well because of how much they could turn into their swings. Because of their extreme damage, they always had less of a chance of glancing.
Now that 1 handers glance less, we can turn into our strikes more. That combined with the overall fastest weapons in the game makes for a HUGE buff.
- We are hit from rediculous angles from guys which are in front of us.
With 5 shield skill and a moderately sized shield, I've never really had a problem with this. Could also be lag related.
- Recover Time is slower IMHO.
Not sure what you mean by recover time, but having a shield in no way affects your ability to attack. You attack at the same speed with or without one.
As far as shield speed it actually got INCREASED the patch before this one. All shield heirlooms get increased shield speed.
- Shield Sizes got Nerfed. .... my Huscarls is only 84!! it was 100! It cover like shit now.
The Huscarl never had a size of 100. It doesn't even have 84 now. It's 42 currently. You may be thinking of shield speed, which is 80. Also, 80 is kinda slow. That could account for you getting hit through your blocks.
- Shielding is slower than before
Don't really get this one as it seems to be as fast as it's always been. Nothing mechanic-wise has even been changed here.
Troll somewhere else please. You got no clue how we got nerfed with the last Version!
I think you may be the one trolling. Especially 'cause the changes you're bitching about happened a while ago. If you are a decent player, shielders are incredibly effective. Go watch ManOWar play and you'll see how effective you can be.

MW Huscarls BEFORE patch
Weight 9
Body armour 24
difficulty 5
hp 453
speed rating 83
shield width 42
MW Huscarls AFTER patch
weight: 9
body armor: 24
difficulty: 5
hit points: 453
speed rating: 83
shield width: 42
where exactly is this nerf you are talking about?
-
Ingame the size is 84.
-
Ingame the size is 84.
It is calculated double what the website shows.
So, yeah. Don't see the issue
-
The Blocking speed with shield 7 and a huscarls is way slower than before the patch.
When i release my shield and try to block again, it´s too late in 9 of 10 times and the enemy hit through my shield...

practice more. dont fall for feints and such. come watch me play on NA some time and youll see shields work just fine... i get a lot more people complaining about my shield being too good than people saying its not good enough (i think its pretty good as is... but give me my extra hp from looms back ;{)
-
Recently I notice shields seem to suck in these ways:
Getting hit through the shield by polearms and 2h swords.
Having movement, and turning, apparently stopped by blocking a light weapon.
Occasionally being unable to strike back before your opponent who is using a light weapon.
Hitting an opponent and their stagger moving them out of range for a follow up.
Bolts going through a huscarl with no sound of impact on the shield.
Lag when turning.
Slower striking from shield raised.
Less damage inflicted.
They used to be a lot more fun, even when 2h was ridiculously OP.
And it used to be practical to duel with one.
I think if you're at a high level of proficiency with 1h and shield, or you favor a long weapon and a backing away style, then you won't notice this lot so much.
On the bright side:
MS and barmace aren't crushing through anymore.
Shields seem to last a little longer.
2h is so not OP.
I find myself wondering if someone played too much WoW before balancing them, and thus concluded that they should suit defensive style.
And also wondering, as I have since the cap arrived, what the game would be like if we retired at 34, and ~12m xp, because shielders need to put points in shield and athletics.
-

dont go watch matey fight , you will end up being a eternal right clicking turtle , watch me instead :p
in all seriousness , i stopped whinning about shields with the community because general community opinion is : shield is autoblock = lame , shield is EZ mode , people loathe shielders , we are entitled to nothing , nor can ask anything , i suggest you do the same , go with the flow...

I've somewhat noticed this, but I'd like to test it more. It seems like the radius of some shields has been reduced. Though I could be crazy. Front-facing you block fine, but off to the side slightly and attacks go right through.
Having movement, and turning, apparently stopped by blocking a light weapon.
Not sure what you mean here. I have no problems moving and blocking.
Occasionally being unable to strike back before your opponent who is using a light weapon.
I would put this down to your opponent turning into their swings. 2-handers and polearm users do this ALL THE TIME. However, since the chance of glancing has been reduced, you can too!
Hitting an opponent and their stagger moving them out of range for a follow up.
Never ran into this problem, but I'm a pretty aggressive shielder and like to press my attacks.
Bolts going through a huscarl with no sound of impact on the shield.
I've heard this happens a lot to people, but have never experienced myself. To be fair though, my shields are heirloomed.
Lag when turning.
Not sure what you mean here.
Slower striking from shield raised.
Not true. All swings come at the same speed. You could be dropping frames or skipping animation due to server lag.
Less damage inflicted.
With the recent changes to armor, this is indeed true. However, I think less chance of glancing more than makes up for it.
They used to be a lot more fun, even when 2h was ridiculously OP.
And it used to be practical to duel with one.
I duel with my 1-hander (without a shield) all the time. Totally doable. If you watch for weapon stun, you can really take people apart since 1-handers are so fast.
I think if you're at a high level of proficiency with 1h and shield, or you favor a long weapon and a backing away style, then you won't notice this lot so much.
Just retired yesterday and am already at level 23. I haven't noticed any differences really. I also use a medium length weapon and only have 5 athletics. Seems the same to me.
I'm currently of the opinion that 1h+shield is the best it's ever been. You have perfect blocking, you're almost immune from ranged, have great weapon speed and do decent damage. With the reduction in glancing 1 handers have become even more powerful. It's a good time to be a 1-hander.
-
rustyspoon says 'I duel with my 1-hander (without a shield) all the time. Totally doable. If you watch for weapon stun, you can really take people apart since 1-handers are so fast.'
(You put your responses in my post so I can't quote you! How annoying! grrr lol)
You missed the point I made - that dueling with a shield used to be quite practical. But I should probably add to this that I use a short weapon, since it contributes a lot to the problem I face with being slowed and stunned for using a shield.
-

Yeah, dueling with short weapons is a bitch unless you're an agi build. Especially since most pole and 2-handers are a lot faster than you. Using teamwork in battle though...they are pretty great.
-
21 str and a falchion creates a line breaking monster. Join me in the fight against unrealistically long 1handers!

Hmm. I've had similar problems, but I put it down either to lag or some other hardware related bother, or the fact that I'm just very much out of practice with shields.
On the bright side:
MS and barmace aren't crushing through anymore.

Morningstar lost crushthrough about 5 patches ago and bar mace 3 patches ago...

I used to use the broad one handed axe (73) and recently switched to the steel pick (64) since the axe seems to suck now - Swords have cut damage that comes pretty close! And picks just do tons more damage! Which just makes it a silly option! - so that change probably does account for some of the new problem of shields being useless to a player like me.
But I'm not convinced that 73+shield is practical for fighting without cowering-behind-teammates* (*Teamwork? For shielders only? Nursemaids to 2h and polearms? :() anymore. And frankly I think that a style of playing, the one I've been using for way way more than 1000 hours since the first wipe, has been pretty much removed.
I think 2h, polearms and 1h are being promoted as the only choices. I appreciate that manual block is fun, I just think it's a shame to force everyone with an ounce of bravery (and a ton of skill :P) down that route.
I'm probably going to switch to nordic (Olwen-the-Hero) champion or spammitar, and learn to fight while walking backwards all the time since 2h and polearms are currently unrealistically better close up... Or just stop playing 1h+ shield if I still can't enjoy the game that way.
I actually do quite well with polearms and spamming, even though I'm not very good at manual block, because it makes the game easy. But easy kills are boring.... Oh what to do?.... lol
Morningstar lost crushthrough about 5 patches ago and bar mace 3 patches ago...
Sorry to confuse you, I'm talking about the game's rebalancing regardless of patch, I probably should have started my own thread.

BAM! Stole it :D

BAM! Stole it :D
You realise there is no shield in that list?
'BAM! Stole it :D' doesn't do much to reassure me that you have the sense to understand what I wrote, quite the opposite in fact.
edit:
Oh I think I have unravelled the mystery you present: Yes, with that sig, you will make me look stupid to people that are stupid.
I have no problem with that, I don't care what stupid people think. It's par for the course that they don't grasp my awesome insights (lol)
But I'd hate to be left with the impression you've given (that you're a moron) if I am wrong, so please correct me if I am somehow mistaken.
Thanks ;)

Being a subtle jerk still makes you a jerk.
If you think someone else is a jerk, there is no excuse to stoop to that level...

I noticed these things i marked in bold letters in yout text, too.
It seems my Athletics 7 and Shield 7 Chars turns slower, and while i am swinging my sword i can not turn anymore in
the directen i was turning to. Or turning becomes ultra lsow from the moment you start youtr swing...
I can not belive that there are so less shielders out there who do not notice these mega nerfs they did to us....

In a real fight every shielder would crush 2handers or poles in 1on1...
That the funny thing...

I have never seen u on the EU-Servers. And even not at top of the boards with a shielder.
Well, i am often in the top ranks on my team, with my shielder.
So why do u think, playing a shielder cahracter from time to time - a few minutes - that you can
tell us there is no difference and no nerf to shielders.
You are funny and a Forum-Junky.

and the way a 1h-shield Chars is acting now.

Well, you wouldn't see me on EU 'cause I'm on NA. I also main shield and am usually at the top of the boards. There is a lot more to CRPG than EU you know.
Considering I have 1000 hours in Warband, I think I've played shielders for more than a few minutes.
The fact of the matter stands; 1-handers have never had it so good.

No... more like I'm the one who watches you two TK each other and tells you both that "I don't care who started it, knock it off." Having 3/4 of your post a massive edit all about "Hey I am now talking about you acting like a moron and about your siggy which has nothing to do with the conversation at hand" is a trend that I am getting tired of.
This is not me having a blind sense of justice, this is me reminding you that this is a "Game Balance Discussion" so we should focus on Game Balance not hurl insults.
-
The raising and lowering of shields has absolutely nothing to do with whether a shield blocks or not.
Easy enough.
fully agree...
want more shield speed and coverage? crank up the shield skill. i have a s/s alt 15/21 7shield 7ath 7wm. heavy kite shield is still superfast, knightly heater rocks the duels, huscarl with 7 shield skill will still give you forcefield.

Noticed these. Especially annoying is the one with guys with 2h and polearms who put their weapon model behind your shield and strike then. Fail collision detection ftw.

And yet here you are, mired in what you're on a one-man crusade to defeat (lol). You should try to see the funny side instead of getting your knickers in a twist like this.
What he did was funny, what I did in response was funny, and then what you did (even though you unwittingly made yourself the butt of your own joke) was the icing on the cake.
But this is going to get even funnier if someone comes along and insults all 3 of us, so here's hoping lol :D

The more I play the more I have noticed weird stuff happening to me. Playing the last couple of days as a shielder, I've been outspammed by big heavy unbalanced weapons, which have struck again before I can counter despite having a speed 100 shield and speed 102 liuyedao, I've had an axe swing go right through my shield even though my shield was facing him and my hand was on the RMB and I've had a crossbow bolt ignore my raised shield and kill me as I climbed a ladder, thus making a foot shot extremely unlikely.
Other shielders with problems, what shields are you using? Could some models be bugged?

Your blocktiming could be bad?

No, what you experienced is either hiltslashing (someone was really hugging you hard when he swung, actually missing your shield and hitting you) or your block timing was bad. It was probably the second one.

Not in the case of the axe... I've switched to a heavy round shield and find it's much more effective. Hmm.

Most likely because round shields have way better side protection than non-round shields.
I think you should improve your:
-timing with blocks. keep in mind that if you lower the shield for split second when someone feint you, thanks to shield animation you'll be most likely hit
-positioning the shield. you didn't raised the shield when xbow was shooting you in yer face, and you were most likely hit from side with the axe.
-learn how to deal with heavy weapon stunning you and range, you have to know when you can strike back and when you can't.
-learn footwork
-learn striking with the weapon timing
Shields are fine, i use knightly kite shield, and if i die i know i behaved like a donkey.

No; I may be rusty with shield use but I'm not such a noob as that: my hand never left the RMB. The axe was swinging right into my shield, it was a readied attack I saw coming. The crossbow wasn't a headshot and because of the angle would be very unlikely to be a foot shot - I was coming up some stairs - and it wasn't close enough that the crossbow could have glitched and poked through the shield or anything. It was just weird.
I'm still interested to know what types of shields give occasional trouble, if there's a "floor" for shield size below which things stop working properly some of the time. Mala uses a buckler, for instance.

Well, i got headshots, when i have used a huscarl at point blank range as well.

I've seen that multiple times, crossbow bolt passing straight through held shield. No way to go around it graphically. Well, there is the "punch through shield" thingy but it looked more like ghosting through the shield. But I've also had attacks going through regular held blocks i.e. lancer attacking me I keep downblock, his first attack is blocked then he comes back and hits me through the block, but I never released it. Of course there's also the issue of shots passing through the head of people.
