Any of you knows a good tactical RPG for PC, turn-based is a plus.
I recently re-installed "The Last Remnant", but there's too many cinematics for my taste, and veteran players advise you to skip fights, else your Battle Rating goes up too fast... It's the only RPG where you get disadvantaged for killing every monster in a dungeon... Way too much luck based elements too, may it be your stats leveling up, your skills leveling up, the critical hits, or the possibility of counter-attacking, counter-blocking by pushing the good key also being random.
For example, you can succesfully block or dodge five times in a row, without triggering the special "push quickly the good key", or succesfully block once, get the "event", succeed, and get this counter-attack in, wich is actually WAY more powerfull than any of your standart attack, and can turn a fight around.
You can get owned in a fight very easily, redo it, and crush them without even healing yourself on the next attempt... Too many luck elements, and i like to thoroughly eliminate all obstacles, so i get a BR too high very quickly. Also, the only game where you're not really sure what skills your units are going to use. And sometimes, you won't have the option of "healing", for a pre-emptive healing, even though you have the skill, and the AP for it. So frustrating...
I uninstalled it.
The two "tactical" RPG i remember and that left me happy were :
-Final fantasy : tactics advance on Game Boy Advance : turn based RPG, where you level up by fighting, and gain skills by using special weapons. Good story, tactical combat with placements, etc...
-Tales of Symphonia on Game Cube : i don't know in wich category it falls, since you actually move on a map, and can "walk into" mobs, wich starts an encounter against one or many foes. You can use your own characters skills, move in or out of some spell, and use a quick pause to change the spells used by your allies, even though there's a decent AI command for that. Even though, just like "The Last Remnant", you don't get to choose what stats to boost, in here it's not random but based on your current title when leveling up. So you get to choose what to focus. All the RPG elements lies with the choice of skills, and upgrading gear, choosing with whom to party, but it was actually just enough. I didn't feel the need for more.
Both thoses games left a good impression of me, and i just can't find any decent rpg turn based on PC. Is it because there's none out there ?
I also got expedition :conquistadores, and was quite happy of the way it goes, but the RPG aspect of it is too thin : choose a party, all of the same professions have the same skills, all have the same equipment improvements, choose how to "level up", aka appoint as sergent or lieutnant, getting slightly boosted stats and one new skill... Not an RPG. It's pure map tactics, and pure luck to not get your loot/rations stolen when camping outside. It got boring quite quickly, always doing the same thing. Barely finished hispaniola, the south america map is HUGE, and just got me disheartened.
