I don't really see the appeal here.  What's the point of even swinging your weapon around?  Wouldn't you be better off shield bashing and just trying to knock people over?

These re-enactments or things like ACL seem pretty dumb to me honestly.  The point of combat was the kill or incapacitate the other guy.  You're obviously not trying to kill or break people's limbs in a re-enactment or ACL.

Things like jousting tournaments seem legit to me still.  Or if you were to do some sort of blunted sword fighting in light armor and if you get hit you're out.  But I don't understand the full plate and swinging weapons to "knock someone down" leagues.  Even the re-enactments seem pretty cheesy to me.  Let's just swing away at people and see if we can rattle em around, or just bottleneck and shieldwall push the other guys...

Then you don't understand a melee. In a melee, if you go down, you're dead. It's not the series of duels we have in cRPG.

You didn't read my wall of text, yet again

There's multiple types of leagues. The one I spoke of seeing and partaking in was a chop till you drop/die/tire/internally bleed.

I do actually understand that.  However thanks for your wonderful insight into how my own brain works.

I don't see the point of slashing at someone's plate armor in an armored combat league, with a 1h sword.  I don't understand the appeal of slashing at people (basically trying to blunt damage with a cutting weapon).  Wouldn't they be able to do what they're doing without the weapons?   Why not just wrestle in plate armor?

I don't like re-enactments or this ACL.  Just seems dumb to me.  That jousting league however was bad ass and I can see the appeal there.  Since they're actually is a "re-enactment", not just a bunch of sweaty guys pushing each other's shield walls.

Fuck the LARPer's get more respect from me than the people in these re-enactments, as far as actually re-enacting anything.

Watch the BoTN's channel, you'll see hundreds of different maces being used. It's to bludgeon the guy into not wanting to stand and fight anymore by hitting him in his legs/head/back/side

I think the americans only had two guys with swords, and even then they were very unbalanced and had gigantic pommels to smash with using your fists as the actual weapon.

I agree though, the whole push people over thing is silly. But for publicity sake it's best they don't do it how I've done it. Broken bones and shattered skulls aren't appealing to the "general" public.

From what I understand, they can't have pierce weapons, or make stabs at one another in the BotN? A hoplite would be pretty sweet to have, but only for the large shield and range...doesn't look like it'd work too well with the tackling people tend to do.

Also, why do they not deploy more tactics in these fights? No shield wall charge, no organization, it just devolves into a big mosh pit of heavy breathing and hugging mostly. Also, to answer the question about why they use their swords and not just tackle one another; They soften you up and destabilize you. Imagine wearing that helmet and constantly hearing and feeling the vibration of metal slapping inside of it and you're pinned in the epicenter of where that sound is reverberating. That would drive your senses wild and make you lose focus--thus allowing your balance to be bulled over by some unsuspecting push or tackle.

Don't forget that it's kind of hard to deploy tactics when you see the "battlefield" through a narrow slit in your visor. Also, it's hard to focus on the melee as a whole when a dude is hammering your face.

it is not THAT small slit. the hole is very close to your face, which means you actually see quite a lot. helmets like barbuta or great helmet only limit your vision by small ammounts.

No. The frame of my glasses is huge compared to a helmet slit and it already narrows my view tremendously. The slit is a) smaller and b) farther away from the eyes, which means you don't see shit.

yeah, europe's tiny; we all live a 15 minute walk away from each other

(click to show/hide)

Yes your countries are much smaller, and having a common interest is much easier when you all live within a relative distance and can meet and support one another, in turn this would make for a larger meet, which makes for more support.  The U.S teams are spread out throughout the country so far that unless you literally live within the city its pointless to bother.

EDIT:
The whole point im trying to make is just simply that when you not only hear word of, but can actually go see these things, it brings attention to it, and it grows.  That simply is not doable with out massive support from the community, which would be hard in the U.S with 4 teams being split by 3k miles of land, how do they skirmish one another?  Yet look at any other country that participates in this, they have the ability to grow this sport with rivalry between the different teams within a country by simply traveling a few hours to compete.

in Poland we have more teams that you have in USA, and it is hard to belive Poland is smaler than USA
your point is valid because in bigger and more populated country you should find more talented fighters
reason is one Popularity

It's fucking idiotic.

The rules are built for a shoot wrestler. You would be better off without a bloody weapon.

Just go get the front row from the All Blacks and smash everyone to dust.

There are plenty of highly skilled sword schools in Western Europe but this stuff just looks like a bunch of drunk morons with too much money swing bits of metal around :S
Fammi un pompino!

I think I have ball cancer in my right nut :(
Good news everybody! It's not nut cancer :)
Bad news everybody, I got dumped :(
