Ok, it gets worse.  I figured it would.  But, does it get better?

I know this story is not one about holding hands and living happily ever after...but still...I need to know something.

Without giving specific spoilers...do good things happen to the likable characters?  What I mean is...is this story more than just a few minor "victories" separated by numerous gargantuan and tragic "defeats?"

characters have very deliberate arcs in the series, though certainly "tragedy" either expected or unexpected pepper the stories of everyone in their own ways

houses rise and fall, good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people, but people are always "playing the game" from all sorts of sides, most stories are still no where near conclusion as its only book 5 of a 7 part series

to answer your question, some characters still have yet to have some of the most FUCK YEAH! moments of the series, and others just get ridiculously fucked, though its usually by a deliberate series of decisions they have made to get them into that position

in short, read the books!  they're fantastic

The series is a huge rollercoaster but if you look at it objectively from afar, nothing is truly resolved by the end of the last book. The state of each House is essentially the exact same as when the war started, Dany included.

It is not close to being resolved after book 5, but there is still book 6 and 7 to finish the story. However, with the rate at which he is writing, they won't be finished until the year 2020-2025. I don't know about the tv show, I guess it will catch up to the end of Book 5 in three more seasons.

You said in your post "the state of each House is essentially the same".

House Stark is nearly destroyed. When the war starts they seem to be one of the strongest houses, now their castle is burnt and the only survivers are scattered around the world and in no powerful positions. So if you take your "resolving objectives-graph" (which makes me really wonder why you even read these books) the curve must go way down much further then where it started. Same with the Lannisters.
Greyjoys and Baratheon is a bit different, but in the same state as when the war started? Greyjoys are hunting Dragons now and Stannis is, well he is fighting his war somehow.

However if you insist on your summary, that in therms of the objective to win the war, no party has gotten closer to it, you are right of course! But what is your point with that statement? And it is surely something different to say every House/Character is in the same state. Which leads me further to my conclusion that this is exactly one strong point why this story is so fucking interesting and realistic. What are the objectives of people? What are the objectives of people having much power or staying at least near it? What are the objectives of people in war time? (Of course "objective" is not the best therm, but I deliberately stayed with it) It is nothing you can measure on such a graphic, which is, btw, looking very funny in a good way

I believe it was a ploy to get Jon on the goodside with his captors, like he is a traitor to the Nights Watch..  A dangerous and fatal ploy.  I got the impression Jon knew what was going on, but wasn't too big on the idea.  He went along anyways, to the point of killing Halfhand.  Whether the ploy "worked" or not I didn't get.

I can see how that would be confusing though.  Am I right?

It was a statement generalized to fit all characters and parties solely directed at progress. Every story has a resolution and after six books, the displacement is ultimately null. It seems like a drawn out and cheap way to milk something at this point, with no near end in sight.

Well and in my response I tried to show how irrelevant your statement is both in regard to the original question as to the quality of the books. Of course I get what you are trying to say and it is somehow a legitimate critique, the progress of the story is very slow. But my point is that this critique is absolutely beside the point, because the slow progress is necessary for this kind and quality of story-telling.

But since you are not responding to my arguments of my viewpoint we simply can contend that we have a rather different opinion in this matter...
