I've been sPvPing/Tourney farming ever since I got all my Exotics and was bored out of my mind farming for gold and this was a very nice step in the right direction. It neutralizes the #2 spammers while still making it an effective closer move, as it was intended to be.

Mesmer Phatasms still do way too much damage and have that OP Moa elite and Thieves are still very, very strong (Pistol Whip anyone?). The lolwin potential of both Mesmer and Thief is just asinine. There's no way in hell that both should have so much utility skills WITH super high burst. The dev in charge of game balance said in an interview that 'Sins were his favorite class in GW1 and Thieves are just renamed 'Sins when it comes down to it. I think the whole concept of the class is the problem. You can pop in and out of combat with stealth WHILE clearing conditions and have the potential to drop someone in 2 seconds. If the initial attack fails you essentially get a free reset to try again. It doesn't help that everyone wants to be a 1v1 hero and the typical MMO rogue class always provides this.

Right now Mesmers/Thieves/Guardians dominate in sPvP and tourney play with Warriors right behind. Their whole thing about "getting rid of the trinity" and how all classes can play the same roles within a group DOES NOT translate to sPvP/Tourney play when some classes are an absolute must-have and have clearly defined roles and specialties while it's a crapshoot with others.

You're very right mister. All I see in sPvp/tPvp are Mesmers, Warriors, Thieves and Guardians. Not even kidding here. That's ALL you see. A single mesmer illusion critted me for 7000 last time, it's stupidly overpowered.

Mesmer being my main, I thought I'd defend us only slightly.

Having said that, MOA is a bit rediculous.  They need to halve to duration on it at least and lower the cooldown a bit, and it will be fine.

As far as the phantasms go, that's our only real source of damage.  If you're a single target glass cannon spec, you are gonna have a bad time.  High toughness and aoe is a real pain in the ass for me.  You want to focus on killing the phantasms to cut our dps down dramatically.  Soon as he pops a duelist (the dual pistol phantasm), kill it.  If he has sword offhand (which is what I assume hit you for 7k, never seen a duelist hit that hard EVER) kill it.  The berserker off the greatsword is a little wonky and less of a threat, but still probably a good idea to kill it.

Also, big tip here.  Use call target on the mesmer as soon as you can.  It will have a big red target above the real mesmer even if he uses clones/phantasms.  The only thing that will break that is the stealth clone.

Rangers have a lot of varied playstyle, I would say you are in a good spot.

You can do a really hefty bleed build.  You can do crazy burst with a long bow.  You can be crazy evasive with sword and dagger.  Greatsword has some really neat abilities and great animation.  The only thing I would say about Rangers are some of the utilities are pretty niche.  The traps are great for point and chokepoint control and that's about it.

I found the sword+dagger combo is a lot of fun, but not really effective at much but surviving on a point or 1v1.  You have 3 built in evades with the weapon skills themselves which is neat.

I've been looking to sPvP in the future on my Ranger...is this a bad idea lol?

You can hold up pretty well if you situationally manage your build efficiently. They don't really have a "routine" like Thief or Mesmers. Pretty much the only viable weapon combination is Shortbow+Sword/Dagger (while switching to horn for speed when you're on the move between points) and virtually every build is focused on SBs auto attack + quickening zephyr. Only go sword/dagger defensively when you're in a tight spot, #4 #3 #2 will give you a couple seconds of evade and then launch you backward (a Hydromancy sigil on the sword will also AoE chill people around you when you switch to it). Don't even bother with the Longbow for sPvP or tourney. Not worth it at all. SB/LB is good for the WvW zergfest though. The problem with Ranger is that they don't particularly do anything as well as other classes and immobilize = gg for them since they pretty much have no way to remove it at will. For pets, I see Jungle Stalkers here and there for power-centric builds but mainly the only competitive combination is Black Widow (or Jungle Spider for more poison, everything else it has is the same as BW) and Wolf since both provide CC where an SB Ranger has none aside from their snare. Wolf F2 is essentially a cone interrupt (fear) which comes very handy when ressing or downing someone or simply annoying someone trying to down you. In tourney play, Ranger is probably the one profession where having more than one in your group is a terrible, terrible idea and for high level competition, even one is pushing it (while Eles are generally considered the least effective class, there are some really good players with specific builds and teams like Paradgrim run dual Ele sometimes; you can get away with one good ranger but having two offers nothing to the group where something like dual thief or dual guardian gives your team an edge).

Rangers aren't terrible, they're just a bottom 3 class. Even on Guild Wars Guru the consensus is that Necro/Ranger/Ele are the bottom feeders out of the 8 professions.

Pff mesmer's phantasm have around 2.2k health it's nothing over powered.

Sure they are good at 1 v 1 but in WvWvW they are bad because these "over powered" phantasms explode when their target dies and with so little amount of aoes they have, they are simply glass cannons.

People will cry at anything that kills them. Just go to a random GW2 forum and look at the whine about Moa Morph being OP in 1v1. A dodgeable skill with 3 minutes cooldown.

WvW is a zerg AOE-fest joke and the game is balanced largely for PvE and tourney play.

Every skill in the game is a dodgeable skill. However Moa Morph is the only trololol iWin skill in the game. It's essentially a ten second stun. I have switched to Mesmer from Ranger and have now logged over 120 matches as a Mesmer (rank 16) and it gives me a significant, significant advantage. In a 1v1 it's GG if you get it off and in team fights you can take their best player out of the game for 10 seconds. Magic Bullet -> Moa Morph -> win the game. There's nothing more hilarious than morphing a Thief trying to pull off his HS or PW chain.

Maybe they could have it so it lasts 10 second in pve and lasts half in pvp.

Every skill in the game is a dodgeable skill.

But not every skill has a 2s cast time.
After I played against mesmers 2 or 3 times, it stopped working on me. It has a unique casting animation (at least I haven't seen anything else use it) and it's so slow to cast that everyone should be able to dodge it without any problem.

Only horribad players would try and use it on a non-stunned target. It's the same as Hundred Blades, Heart Seeker, and Pistol Whip -- sure you can dodge it but anyone who knows what their doing will have you stun-locked before they use it. To be honest Moa Morph isn't as bad as those three though. You at least are able to dodge and try and run away as a Moa. If you get caught in a HB/HS/PW you're pretty much done in two seconds. Mesmers don't have the burst to take you from 100% to 0% in the Moa duration.

Now thieves are the real OP. Fuck them fuck them fuck them.
