Why are people attempting to emulate the Crusader States and Military Order at all? I could think of a hell of a lot better role-models than short-lived religious dictatorships that ended up getting massacred by far more competent enemies.

Maybe because they are shiney and look cool or the people like the romanticised portrayal of them that the renaissance created (The renaissance did a lot of things to "cloud" history such as inventing a new character called Lancelot into the king Arthur tales to promote chivalry, or inventing the idea that all knights wore shining armour and favored the one handed sword)?

I admit that I like the Teutonic Knights as when they were initially created they had an admirable goal, as they were the knights of Saint Mary and promoted various ideals that were for the most part nice. The Knights of Saint John for example were created initially to protect hospitals which is a very admirable goal (Just not so admirable when they later turned to privateering).
