I feel embarrassed for them, it's awkward just watching it. Hopefully these will be the first people to die in any kind of apocalyptic situation as I'm sure they'll be utterly useless at everything apart from reciting their favourite anime lines and making silly noises.

Honestly I've never seen the appeal of it. The stupid hair, the teenage skinny bodies, the abnormally silly weapons, the wierdass costumes that no clinically sane person in real life would ever wear and the wierd lightshows.

No not really, I don`t know how the military works over at the States, but here in Greece, military is very respected and also you get plenty of benefits.

I, personally joined the military for 2 reasons.
University fee discount, and to save up a very good amount of money.
Also my current, good paying job is thanks to my military experience, trust me bro, in a country that has 33% unemployment rate, getting paid 1000~ euros per month at the age of 24, is one hell of a big achievement.

how come?

When you are 24/7 with someone for years, you get attached to them.

Sure, I made a lot of friends out of the military aswell, but I found them boring.

You can`t choose your family, but you can choose your friends

And besides, by the term friend I mean best buddy, not someone that you see every now and then

Lol I know what video you are talking about, two japanese guys interviewing and making fun of some American guy living in Japan who thought he was some kind of anime master with pillows that had anime girls on ( I think it was pillows, or something just as lame as that ), when in reality he was just a fat lonely virgin.

As opposed to what? Being a mindless 925 drone their whole lives? The military is good for experiences that can't be gotten from the civilian world, and leaves you with tons of memories.  You also won't find similar camaraderie anywhere else.

Pretty much works exactly the same here in the states.
Except they don't give you a discount on school tuition. They give you money for tuition, living expenses, rent etc...
But there are plenty of benefits, and it does get you jobs and special treatment.

Works like that in human society since the dawn of men. Military and police serve their masters, not the people. If there were no guards to serve the rulers, every second day someone would be lynched on the streets. Inequality gives incentive to people to progress and only way to maintain inequality is to have protection.

Philosophical masturbation aside, yeah it works the same in my country as well. Soldiers get all the benefits, paid by regular workers who work twice harder. Communism doesn't resolve this issue. Only makes it even worse (every communist country is heavily based on military).

"It takes some courage to stand up and be who you wanted to be and express yourself in this way".

Definitely it takes more courage to be wolf/anime freak than bashing these freaks cause of their harmless eccentricity. Although some could say it's not courage but insanity...

The military is good for experiences that can't be gotten from the civilian world, and leaves you with tons of memories.

That's probably true, but not necessarily with good memories.

I'm just speaking anecdotally. I myself went through part of the culture circa ~2007 but was administratively discharged.

If my life depended on my brother-in-arms to my left and to my right, and especially some of the ones I would've had to rely on, then I was not my brother's keeper. They wouldn't've wanted me on their flank either, a bad link that didn't want to be on the chain.

Yeah, well, sounds like you couldn't hack it and blame the military for your own shortcomings. Administratively discharged, them not wanting you by their side -- you know it's a voluntary thing in the U.S., right? Obviously it's not going to be much fun if you're not suited for it, most people aren't.

Yes, part of the issue was when I went through boot camp is that EVERYONE "hacked it", including those people I talked about who I didn't want to have to put my life into their hands, and those who just talked about wanting to "kill hadjis" or just kill in general.

Also, last I checked the military wasn't supposed to be "fun" and I agree most people aren't suited for the ideology the military operates under. You tend to have a romantic, naive view of things at 19.

You're jumping to the wrong conclusions Panos. Since I've watched 2 animes in my whole life (Dragon ball and Samurai Champloo) I'm hardly anime lover. And I've never said that "those who join the army, do it because they`re dumb and want to kill people". I just think a lot of people - mind you: not everyone - who are willing to join the military are similar to you. Which is not good thing in my eyes  Btw, my grandfather was professional soldier all his life and as far as I can say he and his friends from the military were reasonably okayish.

I don`t know how the military works in other countries, but here after the boot camp, which lasts 6 months, you are free to live wherever you want, inside or outside the base you`re stationed at.

So, your arguent is invalid.

Or they just wanted to do something else with their life as well? The private sector had insane pay from 2001 to 2008ish, so that's one reason people EAS'd too.

Also, last I checked the military wasn't supposed to be "fun".
?

Why else would you go, then? Of course it's supposed to be fun.

Have you been in the military? If so, what did you do there? I'm guessing the answer to the former is a "no", seeing as how clueless you are about how things are done.

I suppose it depends. Considering my country, it kinda depends where you want to be assigned to. If u are anti-air or artillery u dont have to do anything. You get to go to saunas and all in all it aint bad from what ive heard. But if get assigned to some serius infantrything, u do get huge amounts of shit. But honestly from what ive heard, you kinda get to pick where you serve and for some reason the crowded ones are the ones where u do get yelled at and crapped on the most. I quess most guys want the full experience.

What?

I don`t know how the military works in other countries, but here after the boot camp, which lasts 6 months, you are free to live wherever you want, inside or outside the base you`re stationed at.

So, your arguent is invalid.

Here, have the picture I took with my company at our last night together (end of bootcamp)

Shiiiet, i could have sworn you were the 4th guy in the top row from the right, not the short white hoodie dude.

Now i know you are actually short!

Have you been in the military? If so, what did you do there? I'm guessing the answer to the former is a "no", seeing as how clueless you are about how things are done.

You are right I did not serve in the army.
But I witnessed the mental change of former friends which totally affirms my toughts about the  hirachic system the military is based on.
And I think there must be a reason that almost all the funny guys I know that went to the army spend some time in the military prison for disobidience.
one had to carry treetrunks instead of a weapon because he threatened an ashole superior.
one had to be brought back to camp by the MP because he didn't accept that someone cancelled his offdays.

IN my book strenght is shown by following your own mind even against higher forces and not bending to any ashole superior.

Discipline is it's own form of strength. The person you are fighting is yourself. Your "own mind" is sometimes quite biased and likely to follow the path of least resistance. One is not always right, and gut feelings are not always to be trusted. Having some mouthy dipshit threaten a superior officer (to his face, obviously most grunts loathe officers, but there's such a thing as decorum) he's lucky all he had to do was carry a tree trunk. Sounds pretty hilarious to me.

It´s about time travel. Story is a bit slow in the first few episodes but it´s getting sooo good lateron, the ending is hardcore. I like stories which are planned through from the beginning to the end.

Actually he offered him a 1v1 with his knife in his hand when he found his superior alone during a nightwatch.
ha had to serve some time in military prison and served the rest of his military time without weapons. As he tells the story the officer was picking on him and others for quite a while prior to this incident.
And yes Discipline forges individuals to something stronger. I am also aware that discipline is indespensable in the army.
But there is also the eternal truth that diobediance is a duty if the order is of no good exept to punish or insult others.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying the punishments were wrong. They were logic and necessary.
I am just saying ( giving examples ) that the army is not the right place for people with a strong freewill.

And I prefere people that find their own way and own rules instead of participating in a system of hirachy and order.

You can be a free thinker and still do your own thing your own way in an enviroment "now suited for free thinkers".

I work in such an enviroment, State agency, lot's of suits and ties and career chasing douches, yet I do just fine there with my tatoos, anime t-shirts and Vans shoes, it's all about how you work and gain respect by the job you do not what you wear or what you believe. Is it my first choice job? Hello no! I'm working on getting out of there but I need to pay the bills and instead of crying I adapted and I do my thing... still met some great people there, not everybody everywhere is an asshole.

At bootcamp I had a drill sergeant, the biggest dick I ever met in my life. Everyone in my company wanted to murder him in cold blood.

We would go for breakfast after the morning run, and once we were eating inside, he would come in the restoraunt, and he`d force us to eat while we`re doing small jumps, and if one of us dared to speak, that was it, no more breakfast, out to run again with half full stomaches from the food, hell, even today I can sense the food coming up my mouth ready to puke from the running.

He`d use to wake us at 4 am to do a role call with full gear, and if someone wasn`t ready at the given time, all the others would do push ups until he was.

Or, we were ready to go out with 6 hour passes, and if someone dared to speak during the role call, he would make us run around the barracks until he was done with the role call, a role call with 200 names on it

Trashtalking, waking us up brutally with kicks on our beds and every other annoying shit a man can do to annoy others.

BUT.

Last day at bootcamp, he gathered us all and he gave us a speech, he knew everyone hated him and he was glad for it, because everything he was doing to us, it was made to make us be ready in a case of war, there will be times that you`ll have to run after you have eaten, there will be times that you`ll have to wake up and be ready in 3 minutes or less, because the enemy will be attacking.

Utrakil, Greece has no friends around. We have the Turks who hate us, the Albanians and the Monkeydonians who despise us and the  Bulgarians who envy us.
We are surrounded by people who want pieces of Greece for themselves.
Balkans ain`t Middle Europe nor Scandinavia, and armies play a huge role in protecting and serving.

What people like you, leshma, falka and every other hippie prick out there fail to see, is that soldiers have a bigger free will than you. Because soldiers, know that when to war, chances are against them, yet they don`t back down.

The point of those mistreatments is to destroy individualities, strengthening both obedience and group dynamic. It's necessary when coordination is more important than efficiency, but it's clearly not for everybody, and doesn't leave people unscathed. Actual training as in what you have to do and what you have to know, is secondary to that.

What were we talking about again ? Ah yes, I read Death Note and loved it.

Anyway, probably you're better material for a soldier than me, as you seem to have aggression in yourself which I lack and which, I suppose, is needed for a soldier. Also, you seem to like Big Words and this martial/soldiers spirit: "I trust them with my life", "brothers from different mothers", stuff like that. On the other hand I would not break someone's nose just because he "came to my face" (http://forum.melee.org/spam/regret/) (I hope you don't mean by that he jizzed on you? ), especially not at university.

Well, yes and no. The point of those "mistreatments", as you call them, is to just make you obey orders without hesitating. The military has plenty of roles, and therefore needs plenty of personnel, where "strong individuals" are necessary. Going through shit together also builds team spirit.

Generally, all that stops after basic training. Once you get assigned a proper unit, it's all about training. And it really is understandable they have to do that shit -- most people are completely not ready for the military lifestyle, and all that crap really has a big effect. And the harsher shit you go through, the easier the future will be. "This isn't as bad as when we did X..."

Fun fact is, when I came back to play cRPG for the 2nd time there was some guy Panos who was a major nuisance. And that is still going on, despite the fact we don't even play the same game anymore. He's a really strange fellow.

If this community thought me something, that would be to tell a complete stranger I meet in the game for very first time and he's acting like he's a buddy of mine, to bugger off.

"Schmeckt wunderscheuslich!"

Probably a parody to people who actually enjoy licking anime figures. (whyyyyy). Still disturbing since the parody isn´t good either

Greece has no friends around. We have the Turks who hate us, the Albanians and the Monkeydonians who despise us and the  Bulgarians who envy us.
We are surrounded by people who want pieces of Greece for themselves.

If I didn't know you were Greek I'd bet my house on you being Serbian. They too keep seeing "enemies, enemies everywhere"

And those are the guys where generally when they're 80 their only source of pride was being a gear in the war machine.

Says the guy who has profited all his life from having some military protect him.  What a coddled, unaware, entitled attitude.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Anyway this thread reminds me of that guy who was mocked by the Japanese themselves for being an "otaku" , let's see if I can find it.

Eh I have no idea how to look it up but it's in this forum somewhere.

Lol I know what video you are talking about, two japanese guys interviewing and making fun of some American guy living in Japan who thought he was some kind of anime master with pillows that had anime girls on ( I think it was pillows, or something just as lame as that ), when in reality he was just a fat lonely virgin.

Thank you!
