Who remembers CRPG from 2010! I keep getting told the games only been out for 2 years and that im an idiot for thinking i played 3 years ago!
Now im only realising that is impossible! as I stopped playing 2 years ago and that I played a year before that, I dont know if im in the right section, I just want to find out if there are any old players from 2010 who started playing CRPG. I played for a year or so then quit in 2011 mid year.

At a guess I'd say at least a third of the old players still play every now and then. Sometimes with different names and stuff, but I think we've all found something addicting in cRPG. Even if you leave, you eventually come back- at least to visit.

Not sure exactly when I started - but it was when there was only a couple maps (one was a battle map with just 2 bridges) and multiplier was based on proximity so that was funny, and the website looked like random numbers and shitty images on a white background.  You played for hours to afford a simple sword and a shitty ass shield lol.

I only played then for a little while, then kinda fizzled out played other stuff...came back again a while later, played for a while, then fizzled out and played other stuff....then came back again :)

Now I think I'm stuck :(

That moment where you are talking about the pros of the old xp/gold system and no one in the teamspeak actually knows what you are talking about, damn newmy old friends. cRPG is in fact more than 3 years old now. To be honest it feels like I have been playing this mod for like 6 years now, but it's only been 2 years and 9 months.

I remember you joining Ninja, hehe, but that was way into 2011 already.

Yeah, I've been playing the mod almost since it's inception. It's been a long, fun, EXP-grinding filled road. Remember when the NA servers were actually just one server, the "Jestservers" one with 40 slots or so?

Bring back the EXP barn, dammit!
Title: Re: The old days! 2010
Post by: Teeth on August 17, 2013, 12:40:12 am
No matter how often you repeat that it's awesome, from a gameplay point of view XP barn was horrible and the fact that the xp system encouraged those type of things was quite a flaw. Still I think I'd prefer the old xp/gold system. Motivates people to stick together, which we really could use now. Pretty much any time I try to play I quickly GTX because battle consists of either horribly ganking or getting horribly ganked. Because one team always has a clanstack providing some cohesion or one team has 5 people that do not spawn which quickly decides the round with 40-60 players on.

Also, people would get less frustrated, the multiplier is just one big source of frustration and agony. Nobody chills anymore these days.

It's sad when you have to quit with an x5 and a good team. This XP/gold system needs a change , but it seems that it goes fast : they are working on since 2010.

I got Warband when it came out (if I hadn't pirated the original M&B, I never would have heard of Warband, most likely- go piracy; I wasn't in the beta though) and played mostly Native. I came to check out cRPG at some point, when leveling was area-based and BeatrixKiddo and crymoar roamed Japanese blossom filled servers with heavy armor and 2h fury, and this crazy archer in a Brigandine (Birdman) headshot everything ever.

I think I got to level 17 before I quit playing cRPG, it was just too much of a grind for me and I was so hilariously ineffective after so much time. I came back like a week after or a week before the XP change, I think, and have been (excepting the past 4-6 months) a regular player since then.

I can't remember when I started playing cRPG.

I definitely remember XP barn and bridge, and assholes with full plate and four weapon slots worth of death-making. I was a shitty, shitty 1h shielder. Christ, I had literally no idea what I was doing. I remember when the "December 2010" thing happened, so I guess I played then.

Ah, the memories. I used the same name. I always use this name, come to think of it--ever since CS 1.6 and DoD.

Sniper Crossbow+Steel bolts, Shield, Two handed sword of Cookies and full plate :D I was a total D-Bag.

Best ppl at the time i remember was

Kesh- Fully automatic bow (like a SMG)

Goretooth- Destroyer of Heaven

Crymoar- Could kill an entire team by himself. My inspiration when i first started

I started a few months after the mod came out. IDK exactly when

I played in winter 2010 for a little bit and managed to get a mid-20 level light lance cav. Quit because it took forever to level and the EU ping made it impossible for me to accurately land hits. Just zoom through a pile of infantry while right clicking and hope for a kill.

Spring of 2012 I reinstalled CRPG and played a bunch of gens since then. Been playing it constantly since then.

Started playing cRPG in 2010 with a different nickname , Magister if i'm not wrong , was using Flamberge and i discovered after 1 month after that attacks could be blocked lol.
those were very funny days for me , spamming a flamberge in full plate like a true newb but that was a realised dream (videogaming dream :P)

Oh god I remember the old days.. Huddling together with other peasants behind the front lines hoping no one broke through and slaughtered us all. If goretooth was on the other team... god help you. He was a beast in black armor. I was under a different name then that I still play once in a while. But god the old days lol. Everyone raged so hard when the slot system came out and upkeep as well.

Man. I do miss it because being a peasant was for real. Course people abused the fuck out of the wpf rollover. Which is why kesh had insane rapidfire arrows. People with over 300 wpf was relatively common. Still miss it though. XP bridge/barn. Good times.

Warbow and Claymore, no freaking slot system, and decent pierce damage to make archery worthwhile.

If only we could get to play Xmas cRPG once more. I know it died rather quickly last time and it probably would again, but I want to enjoy the old days one last time.

For those who don`t know what Xmas cRPG was. The devs brought back the old cRPG with a new name "Xmas cRPG" a while ago. Fun was had while it lasted.

It died because of the name. Nobody wanted to invest time if they take it away.

For the new era players, it took a LOT of time to level up back in the day, not "play an hour and 25" like today.

Fallen Brigade is older than just 2 years and before that I was in Knights of the Rose ( or something like that ), so crpg is definitely older lol. The days where you had full plate archers firing like machine guns with sniper accuracy then meleeing half the nme team to death because they could manual block

Ah, thought it was Nov 2008 (based on my TW forum register), five years did sound a bit much but four then

If you didn't play in Warband Beta try to imagine the game: without falling damage whatsoever, without team damage (TW actually thought the community would be against it), and without environment collision (meaning you could strike through walls and ground at your leisure). You could skip from the castle wall, Long War Axe in hand (that old ridiculous Native 2h baseball grip) and just chop away at everything that moved from the second you hit the ground, 30 meters down

I killed chadz with stone and got level 2 8-)
(click to show/hide)
I used to kill chadz a lot, he was just standing in the corner of the map, doing nothing. That was satisfying.

12 gold? I never got higher than 8 or 9 and I played as a level 1-20 among level 40+. Was chadz cheating himself to high level while you were all peasants or something?

Ahh, 2010. When we used to mix the servers with NA/EU as well :D Plus no multiplier system, the one thing I would still love to see changed is that old implementation, which came out a couple of days (4 or 5 to be exact) just after New Years 2010 -> 2011.

Otherwise '10 was an era of No Helmet (mostly), Red/Pink hair, lots of Riding skill, Heavy Lance plus a Huscarl and Bec for when on the ground.

Just around December 2010 I switched from Nessaj to Cooties too, only had 3 gens on Nessaj.

Check for old screenshots via windows with these search parameters:

Sadly only one screens pops on my HDDs, from: 28-12-2010:

Dunno why I took this screenshot but there's a lot of names I don't see at all today.

And some more old names, from 03-01-2011, so almost 2010, but still before the multiplier patch which would come a day or two after this screen.

I sadly don't have any screens from earlier periods, peasant days etc. I remember saving up all my gold to buy a Flamberge just to find out it was rather crap and that the cheaper Sword of Cookies/Tears were much better.

Same here. I had like several hundreds of pics from 2010 and 2011 together, but all are lost due to hard disk wipes and new computer :(
It's funny, but I have the same situation :(
Due to computer change though.

That was a nice time :)
I think I've joined in September 2010.... don't remember exactly though.

I think cRPG was so much fun not only because it was made that way, also because it was novel to many people and there were not many "killer machines" and they were not discouraging, but inspiring :D

I think that was 48 lvl....

Lies, I was a Huscarl, first true Nord before they even existed.

I remember being one the few to play as crossbowman with jacko and Gnjus when you could barely hit barn door from point blank.

Hmm, I played with the xp barn system, I remember how awesome exciting being a peasant was back then compared to today, trying to die inside the mob where the teams clashed to get maximum xp and gold :D
Having crossbow duels across the whole map versus Gnjus which I loved... Flogging_Molly back then...

Guess that makes me an oldmy old friend too.

I remember 22nd_Baron_Bear slaughtering dozens of people with 2h and pilgrim disguise. Jackie as HA iirc, Gnjus backpedaling with Huscarl and axe just to make one step forward and instagib another guy... It was fun. Except for Gnjus being level 36 and Kesh even 38 at that time. Discouraging when you just started :D

And here I was thinking I was an ass hole for using a German Greatsword with a Warbow. You sir, are a douchebag.

In the first days of january 2011 (as others may not know, before the Big Patch), I was a level 38 1h/pole lancer with 24 agi occasionaly using a looney tunes axe (this weapon was a 4D polearm with reach slightly smaller than a long spear and 50c swings). Because of epic hiltslashing I could basically spam my way through almost anybody even on EU_3, and winning alone against half a dozen of enemies at round end wasn't uncommon.

My clearest memory of 2010 cRPG was everybody talking and raging about The_Finn on teamspeak and me being like "who?" because I was on horse and this guy wasn't particularly good at lancing other cav.

There was one map I really would like to see in EU1 rotation cuz it was fun...

One tower in the middle, water with spikes around it, teams spawned on one side of the river each, rather small map and everyone was storming the tower to take control because there wasn't much more on the map. No delaying but short and intense rounds. That's what EU1 lacks quite a lot nowadays :?

Anyone else remember the "weeaboo" guys? Samurais with 2 katanas, they charged as a squad and while they doing so, they spammed weapon-swap between their 2 katanas with their keyboard, the sound of swords being drawn en masse created an impressive and hilarious sound, cracked me up all the time.

Surely the 40+ kills he usually got per map were quite hard to ignore regardless of his skill at lancing other cav.

I remember saving all through december and finally being able to get my precious destrier, I was a cav my old friend when I came from Native, only for the big patch to come which made 20k mere pocket money instead of a month's savings.

What I meant was that I barely noticed him when not paying attention to the scoreboards, because he couldn't bump me and rarely lanced me either, and I think most cav players at the time had the same experience.

There was one map I really would like to see in EU1 rotation cuz it was fun...

I personally didn't like that map, because it was a rangefest everywhere except inside the tower and also because it was another no cav map. Not saying cav was impossible to play, but pretty damn frustrating with all the walls, tight corridors and slopes providing cav immunity to any player gifted with brains.

At that time i had around 50k saving up for the "bullets" which cost like 55k something. I was so close i could taste it and then BAM, patch. 50k could suddenly be earned in a couple of days, and bullets? removed from shop. Never got to try if they would actually work with anything in the game :(

Good screenshot there, lots of old Native- and first gen cRPG players, some irc, 22nd, SZ guys and lots of my old clan mates. Davee (Einherjar_Davee), Muhammad_Ibn_Abdullah (Einherjar_Eiríkur), Fennris (Einherjar_Fenris), SuperEinherjar (Einherjar_NaglFaar), Wezyk (from the old SZ?).

I remember this time well, NaglFaar almost didn't sleep for a week (then his char was reset due to patch ), thought the mod was pretty crappy when I first tried it (liked the idea of persistent equipment ofc, and was impresseed with what the irc guys had done even if the equipment screen was only a black and white spreadsheet), what with the terribly imbalanced builds and level system, full plate crutchers with xbows and great swords, attracting mostly bad players from Native that now suddenly stood a chance and those few decent Native players who yielded a lot of respect in a mostly inexperienced community. As lolstab (though only little it was to me symbolical of the dev mindset and change in mod ambition) and primarily ranged were nerfed I soon changed my tune  :)

I can even remember playing with a heavy lance/warspear, a shield, a sword and a bec de corbin. My ingame name was Chazcaz back in those days though I played rarely. Then I changed my nickname to BlueberryMuffin and have been addicted since. Sunk two thousand hours into this game in only 3 years and considering Im not really a gaming kind of guy, thats a hell of a lot.

PS: Can you guys remember how horrible Mokk and Mtemtko were on the servers?

Some of the oldest screenshots are in PW Mod, not crpg.  I know I didn't get into PW Mod for several months after I got into crpg, so leads me to believe I'm remembering correctly joining crpg sometime in early 2011

Some other screenies I have (changes depending on what I decided to add crpg as to steam as a nonsteam game)

Summer of 2010 iirc.  Good times. Lots of heroes back then where upkeep was no problem.  The game was new and fresh.  It wasn't nerfed to hell and beyond.

And of course ladderpulting and full servers. When you grinded for your gear it took some time but you got to keep it with no strings attached and you saw your character progress with new hard earned gear the more and more you leveled up.

Then went on to the glorious templars.

People where a lot more fun back then. Though there wasnt any Official EU "small" battle servers, so I had to play on NA servers at EU day time or RU server.

First started playing as Angry_NoR but made a new char called Annoying_Archer then IR_KuoiN with bec de corbin and fully plated. I still remember the first day of the new patch, didn't know about repairs, and lost almost all my cash in 1 round, made me RQ cRPG for around 1.5 months.

The grind was fun back in the days, when you finally got some decent equipment and could fight back against people. Everyone was equally shit except for a couple of people, some archers some 2hs some cav who just shredded the server and killed everyone. It was all fun untill the point when everyone had finished grinding for their gear, barely anything was nerfed so what you saw was either milanese jarid throwers with 2h's(jarids were pretty much 1 hit kill on anything except plate so basically everyone wore a milanese plate) or plate archers with 2h backup weapons who were pinpoint accurate and fought just as good as any other melee. Rought times still kinda miss them sometimes, ladderpulting was always a blast, archers roofcamping and destroying the ladders werent though.

Gah the only cure to the nostalgia is to remember how insanely unbalanced the game we used to play was, if it was like that today with the average skill of today i probably wouldnt be playing it at all.

Summer of 2010 iirc.  Good times. Lots of heroes back then where upkeep was no problem.  The game was new and fresh.  It wasn't nerfed to hell and beyond.

I haven't played since 2011 but I started just after the steam 2011 Christmas sale. Picked up M&B warband and saw cRPG on the forums. Played for a couple months before moving onto something else. Had this weird urge to see if it's still going and here it is! My level 24 and 21 characters are still saved with their gear how awesome is that :D

I remember it being much more challenging than regular multiplayer matches, that's why I like it. You had to think about your fights.

I started at around April 2010. My name was Burr1ck, I stacked strength, the weapons I used were the Mallet and Great Maul. I remember the amazing teamwork and the reset rushes.

No idea when I started, but it was mid 2010 or 2011. The first time I saw the crpg map was at Harpag's place, sitting behing him and waching Burr1ck standing on top of some tall tower with one steep ladder, sending massive number of poor morons on the ground with one hit of his maul. This winged helmet I remember very well, sir  :D

I'm not kinda pro in finding names :D

Always enjoyed my time here, did some breaks but played quite  frequently most of the times.

That moment you realize you will never experience the old cRPG...

I joined after the XP change and all I've heard is of the mythic times, back in the good old days. Damn, I wish I could've tried it!

Johnny have you ever played Nordic village and experience your team camping in the "XP" barn?  Whether in crpg, or in native, it's lame as fuck.  Now think about that game play being encouraged by the old XP system.  You really think you're missing out?

I only do that when I play LAN with friends against bots, it's a nice place to fight 100 bots, when you're only 3-4.
But it sounds somewhat fun, I wouldn't know tho.

You're missing out on not worrying about your multiplier and having most people fight at the same spot instead of delaying the round.

Besides, xp barn didn't happen that often and if it happened the whole chat was full with "XP BARN TROLOLO!" and everyone knew about it. It was fun.

People camping that barn has been a pet peeve of mine since the beta's in Warband.  Any game mechanic that encourages that, would be something I actively crusade against.

There was also XP bridge. It happened fairly often iirc. Not all the time obviously but I remember it often.

But yeah.. everyone knew what XP barn/XP bridge was and eagerly clashed in a giant blob of melee. Fun times.

Xp barn/bridge/whatever was fun, craziest melee's ever, was even fun as a peasant since you tried to stay close to the fighting while staying alive to get as much xp as possible.

And yeah, not having to worry about multiplier. God I fucking hate multiplier.

XP tower on Lochhaven ATS anyone? Hilarious map and very profitable. All the big boys were fighting on the top floor while the peasants on the bottom floor enjoyed all their xp safely. It's that keep prop that made everyone walk slow as fuck back then, fighting was so silly in there.

Ohh that takes me back! I remember standing around in that room, hiding behind some flimsy shield, watching the XP tick in while hoping against hope that the tincan rapefest above wouldn't find its way down the stairs.

A lot of the 2010 - 2011 maps were really good, now we got a lot of lame maps.

That might be my autism speaking, but i actually prefer 3-5 great, balanced maps, to 30+ random "because it's new" maps... :(

Is it not best to play a well known map, where everyone - archers, x-bowmen, cav and infantry knows where to run, in order to play their role to full potential?.. I primarily play siege, so it might be different with battles, but there are some really broken maps out there in siege mode... I am not talking about glitchy floors and stairs, huge invisible "frames" around wall opening, where projectiles get stuck, or even map's esthetics ( LoTR-style castles, wrong scaling, mix of different castle "sets" ), what annoys me the most, is the SIZE and spawn points for defense:

Why are the majority of new maps so huge?! I takes up to 30-40 seconds to run up to the flag as attacker! WHY?! That is not the way you balance a siege map... And ridiculous spawn points for defense, as a result of gigantic maps - it often does not pay off to run up to the flag, since it takes forever to get there.. There are some maps, where defenders are unable to run up to the "first" outerwall, since there is no way down :( Why is there an outerwall with a gate, if it is impossible to defend it?! What is the point?..

Imo the perfect map layout is - 2 small side-ladders, 1 big/main/front ladder, gatehouse with an easy access for defenders ( you can reach it in 10-15 sec after you spawn ANYWHERE as defender ), a backdoor, and a keep with a flag and 2 entrances. Nothing else really. All spawnpoints for defenders should be within the central "keep". Attackers should spawn next to the outer wall, with 5 sec running time max. MORE ACTION, less boring running, less spreading of the teams.

Wrong section for map-balance issues, but i am a gangster, YOLO

I agree with your points Armpit, I know all the siege maps I made have been geared towards making defenders spawn close to their flag and attackers close to the castle. Sadly not everyone does this and some people go overboard with the size of their maps. This way attackers have to run much longer to the flag and defenders have to run much longer to even get to defend their flag as well. This is not necessarily unbalanced, but more boring definitely. That said, a 30-40 seconds run time as the fastest route to the flag for attackers is actually pretty good. Much lower and the map gets quite biased. 5s spawn + 30s run (att) = 30s spawn + 5s run (def). Can't go much lower than 30 seconds as it is impossible to have every defender spawn on top of the flag.

I might create a 'siege map guidelines thread' or something at some point, as creating action packed maps is seemingly not everyone's goal.

That might be my autism speaking, but i actually prefer 3-5 great, balanced maps, to 30+ random "because it's new" maps... :(
This is mostly just you, even though we had 80 battle maps on the server for the past 5 months, people readily complained about always playing the same maps and it being so boring. In any case, feedback on which maps you find good and which you find very, very bad is in fact very appreciated. Just head on over to the scene editing board.

A lot of the 2010 - 2011 maps were really good, now we got a lot of lame maps.
Well that is a load of bull with nostalgia glasses. I am fairly sure the rotation hasn't gotten any worse, seeing as rotation management simply consists of removing bad maps, adding new ones, removing the bad new ones, and so on. Which means that the 60 or so we have left are in no way worse than the maps that were on in 2010-2011. We might still have to weed out some of the bad new ones, but apart from that the rotation is fairly high quality.

Of course your feedback over which maps you find lame, and especially suggestions for readding some of those old maps you seem to fondly remember are much appreciated.

Also this map is sickening:

The accessable roof is just a pain really.
Every ranged guy sits on it and the melees get shot, while trying to get up...
I know it's not really on topic but pls fix it guys

Huh, well ain't that weird. I already fixed that one before I even became a scene manager, but somehow it didn't get through. Think I removed the map from the rotation altogether in the end until the mapmaker  would make the cover on the map a bit less one sided. My fellow scene manager must've put it back in or something.

In any case, fixed it again, moved the spawns for more even availability of cover and now we wait.

I guess you forgot about ladders then, every roof back in the days was accessible with a ladder, so every map was delayed untill 1 minute because of archers standing on roofs shooting at infantry who could do nothing.
