Title: Your reason for playing a certain class
Post by: Prpavi on March 20, 2013, 11:10:26 am
Share how and why u pick your class.

I am really interested in trends in general so i am interested in cRPG tredns aswell, the last topic on this subject i made was about the gear and how you pick your gear. Most of the people that replied said they value roleplay or stlye over stats but the marketplace and the battlefield situation tells a different story. maybe the people that use the latest "in" weapons didnt reply or you werent all sincere ( bastards!1 ).

So the question oif the day is how about the classes u play. how and why u pick them. trends, clan rolepay, fun, boredom?

Discuss... (/ ^__^ )/

I was pole cav and then 1h cav. Once I decided to give up cav, I wanted to go for something else entirely. Ranged other than throwing isn't very exciting and throwing is pretty much a non-issue in Strat, so 2h.

Shielder, with hybrid archery and/or riding at times.

Why? A few reasons: I do not like manual blocking (it requires time to do and get used to it, and there are extended periods of time when I cannot play and forget most of it), and it allows me to push, hold positions and pull back, fight against a few opponents and come out alive, get off ranged reticules, etc. I have never wanted to be the star in the show, I would be happier being the man behind the curtains that gets everything going while not being appreciated.

Then, when I feel like my chopper is not enough, I decide to get a nerf gun by hybridising into archery. Totally not worth it (low damage, I cannot aim for shit), except for the look on someones face when I drop my bow, and defeat them with my tiny 1her and shield.

And sometimes, I feel like I really should give myself a disadvantage, I add riding and horse archery on top of that. Awful UP build, but fun one.

I choose 21/21 polearms purely because of strategus.

I am playing hoplite because of two reasons. First of all, the class doesn't have to take shit from both cav and ranged. Especially ranged tends to frustrate me, so having a shield is good for my enjoyment of the game. Secondly and most importantly, there is no class which allows me to influence my team's chances of victory like hoplite does. You can suppress a dozen people single handedly in melee, giving your team an edge. You are extremely good at ending fights, by forcing people to block two directions, allowing your teammates to quickly move on and fight elsewhere. Your mere presence as a hoplite makes it harder for enemies to attack, because they have to continously keep an eye on you. Winning dem rounds is what it is all about for me.

This is why I used to play longspear before, but with longspear losing turning rate and ashwood pike gaining, the balance between these class has definitely fallen in favour of hoplite. The lower turnrate of the longspear makes it harder to suppress a wide area and surprise people. So when I reached level 34 I got myself 3 shield skill and switched.

My main has always been a longspear user, since i love the look and also enjoy teamwork much more than any solo heroics.

However, being clanless and generally playing on EU2, i mostly play on my 2h alt these days, because it takes 0 effort and i'm lazy. Also, siege players can't teamwork for shit, ever, they often even work against their teammates, rather than with them

Shielder - because it's universal and can fight with any other class effectively.

Ninja - because surprising your opponents with sudden ambushes and attacks is much more fun. Also running fast.

Playing this... like 2 years now? Still haven't made up my mind about anything. Besides that I suck at pretty much everything except throwing :3

This all leads to mid-gen respec-rage which isn't really helping, I guess.
Shielder is fun tho and maximizes my survival significantly.

Playing 1h/2h/polearm/thrower/horseman/shielder hybrid because i get bored fast of playing one class and im to lazy to lvl up alts, retire or respec my main.
But to the contrary of what people think and say, its damn effective! =D

EDIT: Min maxing is for my old friends!

cav. high mobility lets me help outnumbered or retreating teammates,  giving them a chance to regroup or turn the fight around.
it helps pinpoint weaknesses across the field and exploit them quickly.  other then that a few things teeth said.

Poleamer, when I used to play more Eu 2, I was being pretty good at awlpiking and reach-arounds my teammates to kill enemy with my GLB when they weren't even expecting me to hit them. Now I'm more of a PvE player, so only range matters to me, I teamhit too much :(

I also play on my 2h alt for the lols sometimes, its just so fucking easy with Sword of War

I first chose to play cavalry because I found walking for 10-30 seconds at the beginning of every round to get to the enemy team to be boring. Now I continue to play cavalry for a few reasons, my favorite two probably being the following:

1. I can be infantry or a horseman just as easily. When my horse goes down I am still very capable of helping my team.
2. I am a fine asset in field battles and have opportunities no other class has. More than once I have been part of a small group of people that have capped flags on enemy armies and made them lose hundreds of troops. Having that kind of mobility is awesome.

It's also the only thing I'm any good at, and I hate trying to learn new skills. Change is bad.

no build for me is good enough, i need to go for lvl 40 to get a nice build for me ;(

i want to play xbow, polearm, shielder and cav all in one

Edit: dang strategus...it makes you need other builds all the time...

Archer. Prure archer. Sniper in a way. 18/24, 172 archery at lvl 30 and nothing in melee.
The reason i play this is because i like to imagine things. My imagination tells me that this is a team game and that my specialization in archery will help the team while infantry protects me. I refuse to fight in melee most of the time and if opositions infantry/cav kills me i like to blame no team work for that. Ofc its not that i dont go somewhere i shouldnt be from time to time. I love archery. I think its enough.

Ninja because I've always loved roguish playstyle (low armor and short weapons) and the challenge it brings. Feels good when you occasionally succeed against stronger opponents while at disadvantage.

I play every melee class on foot and i top scoreboards with every class& build(on siege).
I used to play eu1 exclusively but since i dont play daily anymore i just cant be arsed to wait(2 minutes, thats FUCKING ages bro!)for the next round, also i like to play reckless and very offensive, which for battle isn't really a +, battle is so passive 90% of the time, allthough you might argue that im not the teamwork player some are,i think i do pretty well on siege if sided by a good player on siege, nokey, kpu, cora, and who i forgot, as long as you give eachother room you will succeed!

Cav is just too backstab orientated, i fail at backstabbing, and you cant even charge at a 1h without losing atleast 50% horse health..

Archery is not too bad, just that non loomed archery equipment does very bad damage so it aint that effective.
Xbow easy mode, just gets boring after like one round.

Ha is awesome but again, non loomed it only kills with headshots and/or bumps.

Cavalry/shielder/hoplite with a 30-40 crossbow prof in the future. I like versatility and I really gain benefit from it. Smiliar to jackie, but that mega hybrid. What can I say, I'm a cheap version of swiss knife.
I like cavalry because it has the class with best vision of the battlefield too. I would be a better 2hander hero much probably, but I'm happy with my class.

Polearm because I find manual blocking more engaging than using a shield, and I like the versatility you can have. Anti cav, anti shielder, dueller, mauler (with shit maul), poker etc. The stab got nerfed quite a bit but I feel its got a bit better since the first round of nerfs. If you want you can also a shield and play hoplite.

I always liked polearms in other games too

I play lancer cavalry on a courser for a few reasons.  No other horses in the game are catching up to me (so I don't have to worry about someone riding up on me, which is nice because I lance in first person).  I'm able to pick and choose my engagements a lot easier than if I were on foot, and the speed bonus from the horse, along with the length of the lance is nice for putting people down who are not prepared for you.  I feel like I make the biggest difference to my team winning the round when I'm on my courser and lancing people.  I also am a 1h/shield hybrid with max athletics (18/18 at level 30, 21/18 at level 33) so that I can still be useful in strategus sieges.

IMO, you should be picking your class based on what you do best with, and by "best with" I mean the class you do the most damage to the enemy team or are able to help your team the most with.   I always think it's funny when I hear people say "cav is easy mode", do they think that everyone should be playing the worst class they can come up with?  It's a war game, you're trying to kill as many people as possible.

I disagree. its a war game, and as such I play builds that I enjoy. This means that I tend to play agi/balanced builds, even though I know I could get a lot more kills if I played strength build heavy armor 2h/pole builds.

I get enjoyment by being the best I can on the battlefield and influencing my team to win.  I'm as competitive as they come, and it's all about winning to me (that's what is enjoyable for me).  If I was a melee infantry player, I would certainly be at least 24/15, maybe 27/12 at level 30.

But everyone gets enjoyment in different ways, it's just my opinion.

I wouldn't fault anyone for doing so, I have played my fair share of strength builds. Hell, I used to play 24/12 with gothic plate, on a courser with a bec and a heavy lance.

Team game. I wanted to be the generic viking, axe and shield. The works. However, so did everyone else... Relit was away with his suicide nets, the other 2 spears in NH drifted away. Someone had to do it. Then I started to do well with a longspear, at least I would think. Every single round I was (I felt) focused by ranged, and had enemy infantry doing their best to run past my team and kill me first. (Cough San Cough) I tried Hoplite at a time that it wasn't very popular just because I couldn't block very well, nor could I stop arrows with my mind. It kinda worked out. Then stuff got changed and hoplite became popular.

After trying out many of the classes, I just ended with spear and 1h shield being the "funnest." Taking up the spear for the greater good of the team, and it works. Winning is almost never boring. Also, the tears of those who complain about my point blank stabs and BS kills etc are very nutritious.

I have played almost anything you can remotely think of. 2+ years playing does limit choices now since I've done everything. I now played themed characters, like right now, Rouncy, Full samurai gear, Yumi, Katana, Wakizashi, and all that goes along with a proper weeaboo getup.

I have a character in pretty much every class, at some point along the leveling spectrum.  I find that I most enjoy agility 2h and agility cav.  For strategus, I find that I get the best results as an archer, so my main is currently spec'd for that (and almost never used outside of Strat currently).  Previous to the latest patch series, I most enjoyed 2h/crossbow builds, 15-24, because it allowed me to both fight melee and still play sniper on city maps / strategus.

While I understand the current meta is towards strength builds and armor, I have found that I personally do pretty terribly with strength builds.  My fighting style is entirely based on footwork, dodging and sneak attacks, and I never managed to learn things like "feints" or "blocking" in my years here.

I will forever miss my 21/24 7 PS 7 PT 8 Riding 4 HA 8 WM 8 Ath build.  2h/Throwing/Cav with 15 heavy throwing axes and a longsword on a champ destrier, those were the days.

Two hander since ever . My first online game was the fourth prophecy (T4C) in 1997 and i ever played my warriors 2 handers. Less safe ofc but high damage and high risk. Since Diablo 2 in hardcore i have a little proverb "No risk no fun". Many peoples say "Ok 2 hand trololo EZ mod mad in China " (Phase style © ) and they re probably right but damage dealer(lot of Strengh in build) is a nice feeling of power.

In my opinion Shielders are too safe and too low damage(but it s false i know shielder need a lot of skills except for blocking :-D) , pikeman need a lot of reliabilty and really good skills to be efficient(ofc i don't have enough skills) and i dislike range class

Archer & two handed hybrid.

Basic reasons really.

1) Always had a bow, it's just... become a thing.
2) I'm stuck in the my glory days, I miss my Sword of Cookies and sniper-accurate longbow. (My glory days, the game is better now, it's just when I was OP)
3) I like the buzz I get from fighting two or more players at once (or someone I know challenges me in melee), whether or not I win, as long as I didn't get instantly killed or make a stupid mistake it makes me feel as if I was underestimated because I carry a bow.
4) Versatility of being able to whip out the bow and shoot cavalry/crossbowmen/melee players I don't care to fight (i.e. too many to handle/won't challenge me/I know I can't beat/more important things to do) when needed.
5) Fast weapon to spam with the best of them.
6) I look sharp in my gear.
7) I'll be damned if I retire/respec. I'm done grinding this game!

Generally I just don't have a want to change.
I guess overall though, if I thought about it deeply, it's my inner-want to still be recognised. I have my clones pop up every now and then and that is the greatest form of flattery for me, if I change, then I lose that part of being "unique" and my arrogant/narcissistic side of me wants to be fed, so I don't change.

I'm a 1h/polearm/hybrid shielder

I started out with a two-hander, then horseman, then my current build, only to go archer, cav, polarm, cav and then my current build.

Now I've being playing most of my time with this build, over a year. Why? Because it's flexible.

Doesn't have to worry about the two most annoying class (Archers and cav), can assist in close melee and do the close melee itself.

Flexibility comes at a cost. It is not a very good duelling build, but heck, I'm a bad duellist so it works for me!

I always loved 1h since I started playing.  I think I enjoy 1h without a shield the most even though sometimes that is a little silly to be.  Since I am going pure 1h due to the crossbow nerf I was forced to start using a shield to use the 1h I preferred.  So now I am currently a 1h/Shield.

I will admit though, 1h cav is a lot of fun due to the two different gameplay styles.

The more I play this game, the more clear it becomes that dedicated builds are horsecrap. Sure you are slightly better at what you do from the rest, but hybrids have more fun. Nobody really likes to play the exact same thing for 2 months straight.

I like my current 1h/polearm/hoplite/shielder build cause its a tool for all trades. I can tell archers to fuck off, cav to screw off and be good in melee, also play alot of strategus in style. Sometimes im in the middle of a shieldwall and when I get bored I just get a pike and start poking. My passion is still throwing, but its damn expensive and useless in strat. Also alts are a waste of time imo.

Post by: The_Bloody_Nine on March 20, 2013, 06:06:28 pm
The main reason for me to play 2h is that I can fight cavalry and infantry (or the de-horsed riders) seamlessly.

This is also fun with 1h shield/hoplite hybrid but as you all know more difficult than 2h. Also my 2h main simply is stronger than any hybrid. He takes more hits, deals more damage and is faster than any of my alts.

Trying to fight both cav and infantry only with a 2-directional weapon was always impossible for me and I simply don't want to go there because I hate the playstyle of 2D polearm in melee with all that turning away and wiggling your thrust into the air and all that stinking stuff every thrust-abuser is so fond of.

Post by: Tears of Destiny on March 20, 2013, 06:32:28 pm
I have an alt, or had, for every class and pretty much eveyr possible basic build (and a few extremes).
My main used to be an archer simply because I liked the concept, and because there is no other game with comparable archery mechanics., so combined with the romantic concept of a two-hander who also used a warbow I simply loved it.

Several patches later (Okay, many, many, many patches and years later) my archer grew to a dedicated version because I loved running with the now-deceased "Archer Death Squad" that used to troll the ATS servers of old, and because I still loved the idea of using a bow (Even if I could not use my Miao' anymore with my warbow, and instead used a +3 stick because it looks great with the heirloom pack).

Now I play a shielder because conceptually it appeals to me, is great for teamwork, and because it has survived every patch to date without any major overhauls so i don't have to worry about any changes to my build.

Playing naked because being fast is fun, and also because dying so fast forces you to get better at the game. Playing 1h because I started this gen as heavy armored shielder + thrower and didn't retire. If respec auctions become cheaper I'll probably get myself a longsword and drop all the unnecessary skills.

Full Hoplite Baby No Sidearm BS I Go All Out I Mainly Play Hoplite Cuz Its A Fun Class Supports Your Whole Team Can Sometimes Carry Your Team And The Match. I Also Like Playing Hoplite Cuz Of The Amount Of Skill It Takes TO Master Is Not Dat Easy To Bend Your Spear Around Friendlies And 1v1 But When You Master Kicking With A Pure Hoplite You Can Become One Of The Scariest Players On The Battle Field :PP

How Long Did It Take You To Type That?

It's really hard to do well as archer.  First of all, the arrows go all over the place.  Even with high wpf, if you are going for a headshot you are going to miss as often as you hit.

Second, its hard to hit players moving.  Everyone has different athletics and weight, so they move at different speeds, and it can be tough to lead a target properly to get a shot.  It's rewarding when you do though.

Third, its hard to do well in melee.  Having a worse melee weapon, low armor, low PS, low melee wpf, and/or all of the above can make it quite a challenge when someone gets in your face!

I don't play archer any more though, it got too frustrating.  I like 1h/shielder because you get in the thick of the action, can reasonably take on multiple opponents, and has lots of tactical/teamplay potential.

36/3 Tunic and Staff build.

An old man and his walking stick can be pretty dangerous.

I am tired of being told how OP and noskill it is to play 2hander.

So right now im playing 1hander, without a shield of course.
The biggest difference must be that 1hander is way way better (stab stab stab)

Main - 2h because simply like the weapons best.
Alt - 1h no shield to practice blocking and range and cos its most fun or pole to understand how to fight against.

Gave up on archer at lvl 25 with no looms when got nearly all my kills by killing melee guys who chased me down in melee.

Well kids, settle down, I've got a story to tell you.

Back in the old days of cRPG, when your's truly hadn't retired yet and got continually demolished by those who had, there was a boy who seen the likes of Torben, Shieldpoop, New_Player_NOOB and Ujin playing as either sword and shielders or lance users on horseback. At the same time, there was Jackie tearing it up using horse archery (although it seemed like he was using a gun for how rapidly he could fire and how strong his arrows were). From those early days, I knew I wanted to be a horse user.

I tried and tried but all I did was accidently teamkill members of Shogunate. It was so hard trying to earn the money to get better horses and my proficiency with my Heavy Lance was too low to compete with others who had descended from previous polearm users - so I eventually gave up.

Soon after, the way we managed our equipment changed. But by now I was locked far deep into a 2 handed way of life. I continued on and passed my dreams onto my child. He finally managed his dream of become a lancer cav, as did his son and his son after that.

Recently, one generation decided it would be fun to try and go 2 handed on horseback. He is the much hated black sheep of the family - no-one likes to acknowledge him now he's retired.

We are once again a lancer cav family, even after all those nerfs and most likely always will be.

Gay story aside, it's fun as hell . No other class gives me the true enjoyment that comes from wizzing past a small group of archers leaving one dead on the ground after getting lanced in the back of the head. It isn't the same as it used to be with the angle nerfs and continuous horse nerfs but I get by. It is nice though to now see a wider variety of horses now I've came back to cRPG after a few months break. I also did see the Heavy Lance get 1 extra pierce damage recently as well, though I still don't see it viable.

Two-handed swords are my aesthetic "thing" so that has always been my main since I started two years ago.  Even though I feel that I have more control and thus fight better on my polearm and one-hander alts.

shielder/thrower

shielder ability to constantly take on multiple opponents at same time and win, rarely get shot by archers

throwing satisfies urge to pew pew, also provides defence against kiters/cav, and ability to troll people.

Pike. One of the most challenging weapon to play with. I don't remember how much times i rage-respeced into another 2h/shielder/xbow etc but i always return to being piker, cause it's FUN.
Also it's one of the most unorthodox class that heavily relies on amount of players on server to function properly.

Pike. One of the most challenging weapon to play with.

Lol I might have to quote that in my signature.

Anyways, langes messer 1h/2h build because I can fight on the front lines with a shield, and 1v1 in 2h mode. Pretty effective I must say.

cav. high mobility lets me help outnumbered or retreating teammates,  giving them a chance to regroup or turn the fight around.
it helps pinpoint weaknesses across the field and exploit them quickly.

Pretty much this for me. Cav gives a much greater degree of freedom on the battlefield, and you can throw your weight in where you feel it would best help team win the round. Also I hate archers and ranged of all stripes, and this is their obvious counter. and cav vs cav fights is still my favorite part of the game.

Used to love the high speed combat of HA. Firing off shot after shot and learning how to time to speeds/ranges. Weaving through enemy cav and taking them down. Then it got nerfed a bit and I begun to love setting up bumps for team mates and the GK rape train. Bump a guy and let the lancer kill. I also liked nothing better than to troll enemy cav and force them to follow me or just follow them constantly shooting them (6-7 shots to kill a destrier lol).

Eventually I got tired of pretty much being forced to only be a troll build (yay balancing probably increased HA hate because of this) and decided to switch to hoplite and act like a team player, pretty much focusing on taking down cav and protecting the backs of the main group because I was fed up of people moaning about how OP cav were when all it needs is a couple of hoplites dedicated to taking down cav and sticking with the main group to deal with them.

i began as archer but I realized the fun in melee combat so I wanted to reroll into melee. since I mainly play battle mode where cluster fighting is standard, I went shield and ive never regret it.

also I like axes

edit: i don't think It was hard to play archer. I found it rather boring actually. another reason I rerolled was cus I figured that if I wanted to pewpew I had so many other games I could play, the melee part is the unique in warband.

Playing as a 18/21 war spear spammer now, also dueling on nditions with a spear, good fun.
Also my shielder build for 31 24/15 in the making, currently 21/15, works great on siege, topped the scoreboard last week with 38/9 or something, iron war axe best 1h!!
Respecced my lancer to a 12/24(lv 26) ninja, good fun aswell.
Respecced my archer to 15/17, replaced 2h with 1h wpf, going to be 18/18 50 1h wpf rest archery, archery is more fun as a hybrid.
7.9m xp to go till 32 on my 2h alt.
Aiming for 32 on my main aswell, cba to retire at 31 anymore, since I dont play that much.
