Okay here goes a long story...well....maybe not so long.
My most memorable moment of cRPG was my first Strategus battle. I was a lowly worthless peasant at the time and Hospitallers were defending a large castle being attacked by the Free Companies of Calradia (i probably butchered that word). I remember being so nervous at the beginning of the battle because it was very large-scale, some 2400 vs. 2500 troops and we were defending. As the battle began, we formed into a shield-wall and prepared for what we thought would be siege-ladders approaching....but it wasn't. Out of nowhere a boulder came crashing into the upper wall of the defense and killed a few men. They had constructed a catapult so quickly that our defenders climbing to position didn't even realize what had hit them.
The infantry that had no purpose atop the wall quickly swept to the courtyard and we formed a shield wall as boulder after boulder plunged the damaged wall in front of us deeper and deeper into the ground. Before long, we knew this wall would be so totally destroyed that cavalry and archers would have free-reign over the hole it had made in our fortification. Eventually, the wall was so low, that the dividing columns of stone were the only thing that semi-blocked our views as we began to watch infantry and archers form up outside the wall and stare directly back at us. Seeing as they were the Fallen, their archers outmatched most of ours shot-for-shot and then some. Then, came the cavalry. A league of them seemed to jump over that remaining bit of the wall and plunge into our awaiting shield wall, tearing men from their limbs and weapons from those still able to carry them. It was swiftly after that, as men began to lift and reform and some went to deal with the cavalry riders, that their infantry poured in.
Wave after wave of coordinated assault crashed against our shield-wall and sent us scrambling to stay alive, find shelter from arrows, and continue to deal blows to their endless onslaught. Needless to say, we got butchered as time wore on and our equipment faded away. However, in the end, it was probably one of the most surreal moments of this game. It's what you wish you could find on every server, every time you log in. The coordination and strategy put forth by both sides was something that Medieval strategists of their age would have marveled at, and the feeling of being apart of a coordinated unit you knew was so crucial to the success of your side was something as well to be in awe of.
Now I'm a proud member of KUTT, who routinely practices these types of things, however, we do not have the numbers of soldiers yet to fully-coordinate things like this in public matches on a large-scale. Fun nevertheless, and I hope one day I'll see something similar!
