I always love seeing clips from other people that realize how poorly implemented and underpowered spears are/were in relation to other weapons in M&B/cRPG.  They're only THE melee weapon that dominates and defines the history/warfare of the human species.

*The bow and arrow being the ranged weapon that does the same.  In the grand scheme of things firearms still only has a small amount of time with our species thus far, even though it redefined warfare/combat as a whole.*

Great vid.
And I should be nice or polite to anyone.... why exactly?

My friends had thought swords were superior to spears in a duel. So then I wailed on them with a staff (not a spear, just a staff) for a while and they changed their mind :D

Also, I like the musicXD

Buckler, really? Who would've used buckler AND kept distance against the spear?

question is with real weapon? Could the sword user just break the spear shaft by swinging on it?  :|
A lot of people in the NA community know that Dach rages and in the process of his uncontrollable rage, he tends to kick people.

You've been warned!

Depends on quality of both weapons. It rather easy to imagine the modern training "spear" to be cut in half by a good sword, but a real war spear? Unlikely.
Edit: that would heavily depend on length of spear, imo.

I'm tempted to make a cRPG version of this video. Just so they can be compared side by side.

You have to use the same song and also face masks! And use Warspear vs Steel Buckler Shield & Side Sword.

That's why bucklers should be less powerfull. There's no need to have that item so good. The spears, however, would pose a real balance problem if they were buffed accordingly to this. Furthermore, it's not really a difference in stats, but a structural change in how the engine works and what attacks you can do that would be required to match those RL fights.

I agree with Gorath that in RL, spears were the most use in human warfare history, but i think too that once in close combat, even a Hoplite would use a short sword.

Still, spears are underpowered in warband compare to real life. But i guess it's a matter of balance, if spear+shield was as efficient as 1h+shield, it will be overpowered due to reach of the weapon (and nobody will use a 1h anymore...).

I would rather like to see a video about using a "real" 2h sword in the means of lenght and weight and then see if they can dance around and jump like it's so popular and effective ingame.

Furthermore I agree with things said about spears and close combat but would like to add that trained fighters (not the everage forced to fight peasant of course) might have faster reflexes and thus can get into close combat faster by just blocking one hit and good footwork.  And most battles in the past weren't much more than a moshpit. The arguement about "scary" doesn't really count, cause it's always scary to face a real weapon unless you're undoubtly superior. Plus, while a spear is use in the normal line of battle, a buckler is a skirmishing weapon, so when facing each other, the spearman would most likely be already tired but that time thus be slower.

Smart ass out.

The buckler and sword guy was at a clear disadvantage purely because he was using a buckler, it states this in the top rated comments. It would have been a different story if the swordsman was using a full sized shield I think.
Maybe you are not bad, but you are a boring person. Well, that's the end of the matter.

Hmm, actually I think the main point why Spears got used so often and that much in historical warfare was that they were simple and cheap weapons. However I think this video isnt that great. First of all, who would use a little small buckler against a shield? In addition he just keeps being defensive .... kinda looks like one of the new players in crpg who keeps backpaddling with there shield against a great long voulge and wonder why they have no chance against the enemy ...

I think this guy might be way more successfull with a bigger shield and if he plays much more offensive, although I understand that the spear guy can move backwards really quick, but a rush might work on the spear guy, if he dont have space tu use his spear ... :P ... like on 2:41
