and this is why I´m not into those kind of fighting games

It´s just about combos and ALWAYS about combos. That´s all. That´s the whole fucking genre.

Yeah no. I'm super bad and never invested much time into fighting games, but even I know it is about so much more than "just combos". Go play Street Fighter and practice combos and you'll still get beaten by people that don't use combos, because they'll beat you on the basics like spacing, zoning, footsies, wakeups, etc.

Combos is a minor part in most, there are trashy ones like MVC3 i believe that has infinites. Skullgirls also has infinite combos, and some others. Those games are trash, SFV is solid, Tekken 7 will be great. Guilty gear is supposedly good but i dont watch it much at all, and mortal kombat X seems pretty good.

Combos still is a minor part. Frame data, punishing, throwbreaks, spacing etc. Saying theyre all about combos is like saying m&b is just spamming swings.

Fighting games are like chess, but much more fast paced. It all comes down to who has memorised more moves, rules and tactics + super fast fingers in case of fighters. I don't like chess and fighting games because of that, they rely more on knowledge and memory than actual skill. There's also the fast clicking in case of fighters, but only autistic nerds consider that a skill (I'm talking about you, cRPG tryhards).

RTS games like Star Craft are also much like that. The players all follow the same, boring meta, no creativity in their plays at all. The player who clicks faster (more actions per minute) wins.

So basically they cover all areas of skill. Not only the knowledge of characters, but also the ability to pull things off, to analyse opponents and adapt quickly to new scenarios. And clicking fast isnt hard, doing it properly under pressure is.

Besides, what you said can be applied to crpg as well, as far as duelling goes.

The video in the OP is the Fist of the North Star game made my Arcsys and is extremely broken. Even for an anime fighter :D

Personally I prefer when they do a mix of anime fighter and classic 2d, like this Capcom gem when they knew what they were doing:

1:30 for combo. all 1 framers and had to be done during flash frames

First game I ever bought for our good ol' 98 family computer. Computer came with Need for Speed III, some shitty golf game and Fifa 99, which was a heck of  a deal.

Old Lucas Arts point and click games. Man what a masterpiece they were.

Full Throttle was amazing.

Only kind of video games that resemble chess are turn based ones, because there is limited set of moves you can make, they give you enough time to make your move and therefore you can create strategy based on those moves. Every game you're making choices which strategy you'll employ and only thing that makes chess fun is the fact that you don't know which strategy opponent will choose. When you figure him out and beat him because of it, you feel superior, your system produce hormones that make you feel like God.

I don't think that real time games can be compared because number of combinations you have to analyze in advance is too much and they change at speed we can't operate at. It's like playing chess at 60 moves per second.

I liked that one quest in Oblivion (very few things I like in that game) where you end up inside a painting. Quest is rather simplistic, you're killing some trolls, but idea is awesome (best implementation of that idea is in Dark Souls, of course). That being said, I think the ultimate thing would be so create a line of side quests in similar fashion where we we drop inside lore books that are scattered throughout Tamriel. Like in those movies based upon fairytales.

Just imagine a quest where your Dovakhm or whoever drops inside The Lusty Argonian Maid and take upon the role of Crantius Colto, or if female char chosen by player, Lifts-Her-Tail

Of course, there are other books that offer forgotten adventures. Someone should mail this idea to Todd Howard.

Morrowind was also the only game where I actually read the different books I came across. There's something about not having voice dialogue that just makes the urge to read them even stronger.

I did this only in Baldur's Gates. In many other games I just scrolled thru the books in case there was some necessary/quest info it automatically was transferred to journal.

The main reason i have basically no interest in open world rpgs, quest trackers. Good thing Dark souls fills the gap sort of, even though its more linear.

On main topic, Halo 1 is really dope. Pacing, gameplay, story and music, all fit into a snug solid 8-10 hour playthrough. Probably my favourite shooter ever.
