I came from singleplayer to warband beta multiplayer ready to rekt some noobs as cav with 2 handed weapon. Took 20 secs to get couched lance to face. I rage quit and thought multiplayer is shit time to go play singleplayer and kill everyone as 2handed cav.

For early crpg I loved when plated archers charged their cannon for 10 seconds and when the arrow hit your knee it was game over.

those archers defined my playstyle.  it was heck scary how they 1shot you across the map, and if you ever made it close enough, their damn plate armor was almost inpenetrable

identifying each other as duel scum with blocking up

oh shit I remember this used to be the 'duel greet' move, but I can't recall how long until people stopped using the gesture

I still used it when I was playing.

It was simply created as a "I wanna duel, you too?" gesture out of need. There was only a siege mode server in early beta with one map and this helped to identify other duelists.

I still do that instinctively on battle or siege servers sometimes.

Rarely if I'm avoiding a gank and letting 2 people fight each other i'll also stand back with up block held. It's like a universal symbol for 'I wont be a scumbag'.

I assumed it was still a part of the warband vocabulary, still see lots of people use the upblock for similar things.

It's also how you initiate a ranked duel on EU3

The upper block originally means "I am not autoblocking" and thats why it is used as a salute in duels, later on it became a symbol of broing each other, mostly in cRPG or some deathmatch servers though. In other communities if you ask for duels with upperblock they might still go ahead and gangbang you.

wrong

The upper block greeting is much older, going back to the first days of Warband beta as I wrote before.

That pretty much nails it. I upblock when I:
1. greet some people
2. ask for duel / accept a duel offering
3. want to show that I´m not going to attack somebody (f.e. when somebody from the enemy team is just trying to build a siege tower on a map or other shenanigans)

1 and 3 was usually followed by sheathing the weapon, a short hug and a friendly slap afterwards

EDIT: Paul is right, that was f.e. also a common sign for wanting a duel on native Nditions duel server

I went AGI build just to fight them pesky archers. Still think more than half of my kills in this mod are archers. Loved when they setup archer nests, each of them in first person mode. Sneak up from behind and put Sword of Cookies to good use

Early cRPG... for me it was Jackie, Subotai, Kris and their kin owning the server as plated level 43 horse archers. There was nothing anyone could against them. It was game of hiding, even elite cav like Tommy, Oberyn and Ujin were trying to get under haystack.

Think I splashed my first savings on Steel Shield, after I found out my build isn't compatible with it. Wanted to buy armored horse but those were crazy expensive back then. Leveling was much easier than earning gold. You could play for an hour or two per week, retire and get gen bonus.
