Depends on the content, is the gamer entertaining? Or does he provide a lot of useful information that can improve your game? Is he simply really good that motivates you to play?

I certainly think these justify giving money to someone who puts effort into doing what he does.

Like i mentioned earlier, said streamer can be very entertaining. I often find myself following a stream not because of the game but because of the person playing it, if they make me laugh and giggle constantly then why not watch a stream, its entertainment. Besides, i usually smack them up on the side monitor while playing other games.

Same about watching sports?
As Gravoth said it can have entertainment value: when you are actor you dont react like if you were spectator.
Also you may not have access to the played game or cannot reach the entertainment level the streamer has (skill, PC quality, his friends + the crowd); sometimes you just dont want to play but you would watch a video instead. Thats really perfectly standard procedure applied to videogames.

Now of course, if you have the game, want to play it, and have the option to watch someone play or do it yourself, yes of course its better to play the game
