My father's done martial arts for 50 years, so he gave me a choice when I was six. Wrestling or judo.

I'm kinda wondering which would be more useful irl... Judo or wrestling?
Tbh... I'd probably go with... hmm... I can't really decide

Both have their perks tbf.

Go with Muay Thai or Kickboxing actually.
The work out and conditioning effect is insane and it has pub-usability.

Both of those are options, but I'm not a fan of kicking (looks gay IMO) and I'd never use it in a real fight (not that I expect to get in many fights).

I subscribe to the notion that if I need applied pub-violence, I will employ the ancient tradition of pub-fighting. This means either going for the grab and trying to ram their face into things, or throwing lazy sluggish punches at their face till one of us has had enough.

I imagine wrestling would be best for that, though there's something lame about the idea of actually practicing martial arts then getting involved in a pub brawl with average joe drunkard. So tbf maybe kickboxing or Muay Thai would be best if I'm only doing it for fitness, that way I wont be tempted to ever use it IRL.
I was looking at the boxing part anyway. It's more freely compared to oldschool boxing, involving grabs and throws... Just use the kicking practice for conditioning.

There is Chinese Boxing too... but that's probably already too Asian, I assume?
Philosophy:"Only a fight finished in 15 seconds is a successful fight" :P

As an adult, Judo, little question about it. Wrestling is too specialized with sporty rules, plus Judo throws and takedowns are very useful when you're against someone not wearing spandex (i.e. everyone you'll come across in real life). Dedicated Judoka have insanely strong grips, too.

As a kid, it depends. Wrestling is usually better for athleticism, which is more important to kids than techniques.

Wrestling is a sport, Judo's a martial art. If you want to use it for fighting, Judo gives you more leeway in how you do things. If you're a good wrestler, you'll get things done too, though, and either way you can't go wrong.

I get the "kicks are gay" from a balance/mastery perspective, but when you got solid ground under your feet kicks are way better than punchs, especially if you dont do a lot of them. Punch someone 10 times then brutal unexpected low kick. Like in cRPG, gotta cycle all the attack directions as much as possible to keep your opponent busy!
