While my relatives taught me a lot of good things, they had little relevance to the real life. A kind of "work hard, be nice to people, good prevails, meek inherits earth" mix. It's all very nice, but I have to admit that my personal interaction with the world and it's inhabitants taught me better and different values.
Imo going boldly through life is what teaches one most. May be some are lucky to have cool parents who are up-to-date with realities of the world, but unfortunately, it's mostly like Xant said. I don't insist, that's just my pessimistic view of things
