I´ve been on a game convention lately and visited a lecture about this topic, thought I might share it here aswell:

BrainHex is currently the most advanced system to analyse the different motivations of a person to play a game. Depending on that, these persons can be allocated to specific classes. To maximise sales and a good gaming experience, some games try to attract as many gamer classes as they can without ruining the game itself (f.e. a nice example is the upcoming Fallout4 which sorta is an RPG, a Shooter and a sandbox-basebuilding-game).
