everyone is raving about siege AI in patch 14. anyone tried it?

i started playing shogun 2 instead and im too rehooked on that right now

Haven't played it in awhile, either. Last I saw the AI would still do things like this

(They were attacking my village, saw nobody was home and just stood there for half an hour until they lost)

yeah AI still thinks village capture points win the battle, its such a shameful display my CA. you know I dont recall it being mentioned in patch 14 notes either

idk why they removed capture point victory from villages completely. if you are defending costal village vs land force, you can just put your ships on in ocean and wait till timer runs out. even vs a player, so was a fucking dumb move to remove.

It didnt for me, and I'm using mods on top.

If you have problems, you can revert to patch 13 by unselecting the beta patch in the steam beta options of R2, but I advise you to start over and enjoy the new siege AI. It isnt perfect but it grew from completely stupid to average challenge.


Had a multiplayer campaign battle a few days ago where my mate and I attacked a walled settlement managed by the AI.
He put hoplites on the walls in front of our auto-ladders, and if he had had enough hoplites to actually cover the whole ladder-front, we would probably have lost.
Happens he hadnt, and had to sent mobs to cover the weak points, but they were slowly grinded to dead meat. Still, in the meantime, the other attacking force was routed and shattered and killed to the last, but it gave my group time to descend into the city and start attacking from everywhere at which point we won a costly victory.


I still didnt test a battle where the AI is attacking and the human(s) is defending, but I read from multiple reports that the AI almost never torch the gates down anymore, and re-use the siege engines everytime it is needed.
No more gate-camping tactics.

I love how you say that with complete and utter confidence that mods always improve the game and don't make it worse. even those most the popular mods don't even explain the changes they make they just say things like "balanced X, improved Y, fixed Z". and are likely to be causing issues since there is no easy way to update mods (I've had to remake a couple of mine but my biggest mod I really cant be fucked to update).

Complete overhaul mod can be tricky to analyze and put in "good" or "bad" mod indeed. Most of them have an expanded changelog but who read everything anyway?

Some things in the mods I use, I dont appreciate, but overall I do. Only way to check is to download and play, same for compatibility/savegame issues unfortunately.
Its easy to backtrack if you encounter problems, just uncheck the mods you dont want to play or which caused problems; also you can modify a "workshop mod" into a "standalone mod" by just renaming the workshop files in the data folder to anything different, so it wont be auto-updated by steam.

Thats how I played very long multiplayer campaign with outdated still good mods.

I've played some Emperor Edition the last few days, the game has been thoroughly optimized in most every aspect, probably to the point where it should have been at release. Even siege seems to work now. It's a good game, and I play it without any mods.

Whats good?

The AI (both enemy and your own troops) is low.

You have to tell your elite units (including elephants) to defend themselves - otherwise the worst enemy troops will simply slaughter them. Mindless click click click.

Instead of waiting 1 round till the city would surrender, the AI starts an assault and loses 4 armies.

Its a game for children who dont care about poor graphics.

Lastly, even on best gaming machines in many many cases there are unbearable lags and freezes because sloppy game code. 

To sum up, its been a while I enjoyed playing Rome (1). In all those years, CA apparently learnt nothing but keep kids buying their crap.
Worst game ever.

I mostly agree with you concerning release version and a good while after that. But try to install the Emperor Edition and make an attempt at a for example legendary difficulty 'Caesar in Gaul' campaign (preferably after reading some 'Commentarii de Bello Gallico').

Smooth is the admin NA deserves. Not being that much better, EU deserves Thomek.

In non-fiction, Adrian Goldsworthy's 'The Complete Roman Army' is one of the best treatises you can find.

Imo it's finally playable and the battle AI is the best it has been in any total war game so far, of course that is not a very high standard.
