Also, a good book is one that reads well and will suck you in its story, judging a book by its faults is nitpicking on the details. The 40k universe is so massive and so full of information that I envy the writer who manages to write one without errors
Some did.
I enjoy Graham McNeil, who is my second fav writter in warhammer after Aaron Dembski Bowden, and they both wrote some perfect books, without any fluff errors.
But its not only about fluff.
It's also about some things that are clearly impossible in the universe.

I'll spoil the Omnibus in the spoiler bellow :

I made my own chapter years ago, but I gave up on tabletop because.. Wel... The people that play this.. Lets say they arent my people.. I never understand their jokes :P

Haha yeah same here. I only played recently cos some colleagues had a full on regression back into it and I thought I'd give it another go. Ended up spending like 15% of my wages every month on stuff for my army :S Moved companies and now never use it, and its getting ebayed.

As a starting point in WH40k universe...

Why, you obviously start in 30k! Horus Heresy series! It is the stuff that defines pretty much everything that happens after, whilst also giving a good insight into many of the legions, as well as the universe itself.

'I was there,' he would say afterwards, until afterwards became a time devoid of laughter. 'I was there, the day Horus slew the Emperor.' It was a delicious conceit, and his comrades would chuckle at the sheer treason of it.

Recently finished reading all the currently available HH novels, aww yeah :)

Well, i disagree with that. But i understand your point.
Because the 30k universe is completly different than the 40k.
So if he starts reading the 30k books, he wont know anything about what is really warhammer 40.000.
It's really not the same atmosphere & the background.
In my view, it's better to properly know the 40k universe before steping back and read the Horus Heresy Era.
And so, when he will read the 30k books, he will understand many things, that he vaguely knew from the 40k books.

Well, i knew 40k from a number of games and from reading a lot of the wh40k wiki, before i started HH.

Still, it's a great series.

do we have a 40k thread? I cant help but feel that 'MY DREAM, MY LIFE, MY LOVE, MY AFFECTION, MY DESIRE, MY G SPOT, MY LOVER' does not truly illustrate what this thread is about :D

It bothers me that their world eater song has a black templar on its cover

'tis a youtube video, a slideshow m8

FUCKING HERETIC
Death metal music with warhammer 40K ...
Only kids metal fan-boys do that. Thoses who don't really know the universe.
Those who just enjoy the "swag death metal style" of some units / factions....
And sadly i see more & more often such videos on youtube. :(

Well what did you expect from Bolt Thrower, a country song?

Also this album was released in '89. I'm quite sure they know their shit.

Yeah I think they were like the official Warhammer band or something, during like the first edition of 40k. When space marines looked like...

Yeah copying a bit from wiki here

The band takes its name from a weapon in the popular tabletop strategy game Warhammer Fantasy Battle. The lyrics and artwork of their second, third and seventh albums were based on Warhammer Fantasy Battle and its futuristic companion Warhammer 40,000, with much of the art actually being provided by the game's publisher, Games Workshop.

Give me the name of the book included in the UM Omnibus please.

If i'm correct, it's the 3 first book.
(So they are decent correct)

Snip

But single romans are better when you start discovering the warhammer 40k universe.
Because you will learn much more about different chapter / factions, etc...
Reading a trilogy of the same hero wont make you learn much.

By the way, the small book " For The Emperor" is pretty cool, with some humour (which is rare in war40K) and a very good story.
It's one of my favorite, but i don't advise to read it as a beginner.

@joseph porta : Go read the Horus heresy books, if you didn't yet.

The ommniibus includes  3 books yeah, idk if i read the followwing three though, read alot of stuff. Anyways, ii wwaiting wwith the horus heresy especially because its such a large chunk of books to go through that inwwanted to do it properly. So far Gunheads is by far my favouriite novel.

I was actually thijnkingof setting up an imperial guard motoriied regiment, but i never got the money for it..

I loot corpses of their golden teeth.
But he'll be around somewhere between Heaven and The Devil, because neither of them will take him in, and he'll be farting loudly and singing a filthy song.

i'll be there at around
