Anders and AntiBlitz are pretty much spot on.  However, both measurements are taught and used in the US, just with more emphasis on the imperial system.  So it's not like we're completely blind to the metric system, we just have a preference to the alternative.
"Preference", more like status quo bias
Meaning lies as much
in the mind of the reader
as in the Haiku.

I can't tell if that's supposed to be patriotic or self-deprecating, but it's pretty hilarious in either case.

That is a huge load of horseshit.

Are you a builder or an Engineer? If not please shut up. I Do this for a living and I know what I'm talking about.

Just an example...

Quote
The number 10 can be divided evenly only by 2 and 5. But the number 12 can be divided into whole numbers by 2, 3, 4, and 6. This makes for a lot less skull sweat—and better precision—when doing odd things such as dividing into thirds. One-third of a meter is 33.3333333333333 cm, but one-third of a foot is 4 in., period.

Extending this arithmetic ease to working with U.S. standard sheet-good sizes, one finds that a sheet of 48-in. by 96-in. plywood can be divided evenly three different ways in each direction: 12-in. centers (four or eight spans); 16-in. centers (three or six spans); or 24-in. centers (two or four spans). And that sure makes life easier for a hard-working framer.

You do realize that cutting your wood planks or carpets in metric units at production gives you the exact same advantages? :x

I don't think he does.

In the end the metric system is clearly superior because it is actually a system and not a collection of terms people got used to over the years.

TIL american engineers can only handle integers.

I admit, I had my suspicions.

How many cubic inches is a gallon? How much does a gallon of water weight in lbs when it has its highest density(40 °F)?

One liter is 1000 cm^3 and a liter of water weights about 1 kg. Makes shit easy. I pity American engineers with their cripple units. Metric system masterrace. Ordnung muss sein.

It's funny but some of what Anders says is true. The company I work for makes telecommunications antennas and filters and all of our engineering drawings use imperial measurements (I live in Canada). When I asked why we use this, as mentioned, collection of random measurements I learned that the company was founded by an American 65 years ago and to convert our thousands of drawings into metric is unfeasible. It's particularly funny because our current engineers are mainly Chinese immigrants who are trained to use metric and they absolutely hate with a passion how they have to make measurements in fractions of an inch as opposed to using millimetres.

Tl;dr imperial sucks collosal dick.

I work for a canadian company but we are mainly in europe. as a result half of the nuts and bolts and threads are imperial and the other half is metric.
It is simply disgusting. and then you always find an idiot who forces a metric bolt into an imperial thread.
But not only this. you get your screwgun ready with a phillips bit to dismantle some woodwork and then you suddenly realize they used Robertson screws.
What the fuck!! robertson is crap why are they still in use in NA?
