I indeed misunderstood you. It sounded like you wouldn't like it.
Well, I agree that it needs to be seen if it's any good. It will hardly be realistic or sim-like. I still think that it's great to at least have the option. I still hate that GRID 2 for example doesn't have cockpit view which had been the best feature of GRID 1. They actually said that barely anyone was playing the cockpit view... but I digress.
I got myself the Early Access of "Next Car Game" a few days back and hell, it's awesome in 1st person view but it's actually rather close to a sim tbh. Cars feel awesome and with reasonable difference to each other based on weight and it's distribution and stuff (Hot tip for every race game lover...)
Anyway, just having the option is already great.
Just based on that news, it went to a close pre-order candidate. Imagine a nice handling like GTA 4, heavy-feeling cars, and a cockpit view. This could be really awesome.
I'll need to see some footage first tho.
Edit: Gameplay scenes from the PS4, done by a German games mag. Ignore the speaker and enjoy the "trailer". Looks promising to me. They had the chance to play 4 hours freely and their preview rating is very promising.
