I could swear that I actually sat on that terasse one afternoon with my parents while on a Norway holiday. I know it sounds stupid but buildings like these as a pub are rather rare I guess. It doesn't happen to be close the some small sportboat port or something? I think I remember a small port close by...

Probably just another place which happens to look very very similar...
I believe i've been there myself as well.

Anyways, more Rīga :)

ruins in the siebengebirge,  just outside of bonn.  rich history, next to an incident that might have been the origin to the story of snowwhite, the story of siegfried the dragonslayer from the niebelungensage takes place here,  in a cave at the drachenfels (dragonsrock)

the ruined castle drachenfels, it belonged to the archbishop of cologne and is on said drachenfels just over the rhine river
(click to show/hide)

view from the drachenfels to the lionscastle/ löwenburg (on the steeper hill center left),  which belonged to the herren von sayn,  the house from which also "snowwhites" character came from.
(click to show/hide)

the siebengebirge was the boarder region between the lands of colognes archbishop and the quite powerful family of sayn,  which is why it has a multitude of castles/fortresses.  this made it very appealing to the people in the romantic era,  which is why many  castles/chateaus/mantions where built there during that time:
just beneath the drachenfels,  you can find schloss drachenburg
(click to show/hide)

close by,  you have the hirschburg:
(click to show/hide)

the ruined burg rosenau:
(click to show/hide)

and then there is ofc the löwenburg itself:
(click to show/hide)

and the ruined monastary heisterbach:
(click to show/hide)

i wish i could show you just how close all these things are (there are even more ruins and castles but i cant be arsed to put them all together here).

in a days hike,  you can practically visit a hand full of beautiful chateaus, 3 ruined castles,  see two more on the other side of the river, visit  the mountain on which the biggest castle used to be (which was torn down to build a nearby city and the dome of colonge), one fake ruin from the romantic era,  the caves in which snowwhite was raped and murdered by the seven dwarfs,  a V1 launching pad,  the ruins of a weaponsfactory and of a bewildered mansion,  a handful of bunkers and other weird ruins and shit you cant even tell about what it is.

Used to be the pride of my town:

We used to have this running around in our old city part, delivering the beer old-school style with a horse waggon. Then some gay Belgium investor came along, bought the majority shares of the brewery and the horses were gone... Fuck them!

I ended up in this sh.thole for phd. Nobody should live here actually, this place is boring is f.ck, local people are very arrogant, narrow minded and discriminative, no life on streets, 2nd most expensive city in the world, terrible food, terrible weather. A lot of gold in the banks though ... But seriously, don't bother to come here, waste of time and money ...

It was a beautiful day, so I took a stroll through town and made a few pictures (I don't do this often, which should be apparent from the picture quality):

Is there a rather big sawmill in the town? I remember driving down a mountain side (left side mountain/right side bigass sawmill or at least some wood industry)...

I lived there for two years, too. I agree that the people are kind of arrogant and shallow. But terrible food? Zurich has a lot of great Restaurants, with food from many different cultures of the world. Also, the weather is not much more terrible than in the rest of the country. Nightlife is pretty typical for western Switzerland, it's concentrated on a few popular clubs, and the rest of the city is almost dead. The lake is pretty nice during summer, and there are a few forested hills nearby that are great for jogging.

Overall, I agree with you, though, Switzerland in general is not very attractive for foreigners. It's very, very small, in everything. It has beautiful places, but for young people, it isn't very interesting. You should have gone a bit further to the north, to Munich or Berlin.

Well there are a few sawmills around, only one big still active, the one you describe sounds like 25-30 minute drive from where I live, so odds are you ate at my pub

Tourists who drive through Norway tend to drive past where I live, when coming down / going up the mountain passes leading west to Stavanger or further north, it is the most scenic route afterall. Lots of german tourists in their caravans during summer

As you can see, it's quite a different atmosphere, but each has its charms  :) Even though I must say I still like the European architecture better... and especially the build quality of the houses
For while the fire in the heart of a single Remnant still burns... can Stratia truly have fallen?
