Simply because it wields the title of "country" and not "state" it suddenly matters more?
Yes, indeed. There's a lot more differences between European countries than there are between American states.

I beg to differ on that account. Of course, being an educated man, you seem to fail in respect to understanding the dynamics between the states.

Entire area's of the country are very different from others. In fact, you could catagorize each state almost into it's own country(in fact California is effectively it's own country!). It IS how the US was founded. Each state its own "effective" country, with a governing body to keep them from killing each other and to keep big bad Europe out.

So are the differences between asian countries or african countries. Yet most dont even know the location of the less significant ones.

To his defence he did use the words "a lot more". As in I think most people do know that the states are very different from eachother, but European countries are more. Or atleast used to be. They arent too far from being "states" imo.

You can beg to differ all you want, it's still a fact. I didn't say the States are identical to each other, or that there aren't many differences. Those differences are still small compared to the differences between European countries; each also has its own language.

Would like to point out Indian states here  :)

Though I see you already ruled those out to  :P

The US actually has no official Language. Though due to the large majority of 1 language speakers, we default to the most common denomination.

Most EU countries, on the other hand, have official languages(IE Germany=German). In the more prevalent Spanish border states, you'll often see both languages, even in use on the government level.

Perhaps you should list these "Differences" between EU countries. I'm rather Curious. Can you state, to some degree of reliability, the differences you claim?

Well, some have different currencies, for example. Different postal addressing system. Different political systems (monarchies, republics, direct democracies, etc.). Completely different languages. Food culture various as wildly as possible, we don't just have burgers over here. Laws are also more diverse (e.g. age of consent: 13 in spain, 18 in various other european countries).

It should be clear without needing further discussion, since Europe had separated cultures that developed over thousands of years, while America had only a couple hundred years to differentiate. Even with the standardization that progressed quite fast in the Europe of late, the differences are still much wider than between states.

Anybody noticed that NONE of them misplace France ?

The Netherlands and Belgium are hard, also there seems to be lots of confusion between "eastern neighbours of Germany" : Czech Republic, Poland and Austria are messed up badly.

And for some reason they seem to think Sicily is a country.

A current high school student born and raised in America, I can label every single European country without effort, excluding the former Yugoslavian countries - they take a bit of thought. Then again, I have a strong interest in European geography and history. My guess is that only half of Americans could label half of Europe accurately and probably not even the U.S. states. (I wouldn't say this is a lack of intelligence, but rather a lack of interest.) I would assume most couldn't label the majority of African, South American or Asian countries anyways.

Personally I wouldn't take surveys like these too serious. They usually make me smile but of course they only show the most bizarre answers. No reason to regard "Americans" per se as the dumbasses they seem to be here.

I think I could name most of the US states (New England and all those rectangles in the midwest are a bit tricky) but I had some problems with the Balkans and the Caucasus region myself...

EDIT: Btw "West and East Germany" WTF??? I'm not an Easterner!

EDIT: Btw "West and East Germany" WTF??? I'm not an Easterner!

East Germany existed for 1/3 of the total "German" life. (Germany as a country formed mid 1800s, and East Germany existed from '49-'89)

And for a lot of the older people, East Germany was de facto for most of their lives.

Don't take my Edit too serious. The guy actually shows that he has an understanding for the East-West difference in Germany. It's just that he draws a simple line from north to south which would count Bavaria, one of the richest German states, to "East Germany"

Would you rather like it to be called bavarian? Because for many people there's simple no difference.  :P
