Remove the merc banner

Always found this one most iconic of the Mercs (together with the native red/white swords one):

Not a fan of the newest as an in-game banner, looks great and all as a picture (great job really), but as a medieval banner it is a bit too 3D/artsy IMO.

I'd try and "herald" up the in-game banner, e.g. make it in a more medieval style - still the same design just with a more old/medieval look.

Else I've never been a fan of the chocolate chip cookie rules for banners in general.

Can see I received some flak for stating my personal taste, that I think the Mercs banner is the coolest in cRPG (barring historicity), you may not agree but let me explain my position 

First of all I like the color scheme, golden-rimmed white on a black field, very stylish in my opinion. Then there's the most important thing of any banner; symbols. And the Mercenaries banner is full of them, it's not just some dog or fox or other heraldic animal, the things here have meaning, tradition and history tied into the clan directly, it's not just something someone copy-pasted from the internet because 'it looked cool' or something arbitrarily made to fit a clan theme. I also happen to like wings, skulls, crowns, blood, armors and swords, these are powerful symbols, today aswell as in the Middle-Ages.

It may look a bit cheesy if you wear that sort of glasses and it may be too 3d-ish and modern to look like real Medieval heraldry. But especially when worn in-game where it's a bit blurred I think the white wings protruding from the golden sun-like circle with the skull center on the black field looks very iconic and powerful.

But anyway, when I say something 'is the best(est)! or coolest' I'm of course not dead serious, there are many great banners in cRPG, each great for its own reasons and in its own right, the Mercs banner just has something special from my perspective.

Mercs banner is meh to me it doesn't look that good on heraldic mail as it blurs a little but it looks ok on a shield but to each their own

Cartoonish is better than a 3d render. Also, if you look a bit on medieval paintings, skulls are prevalent, so maybe you can copy a design that is a bit less pirate-like and more medieval-style.

BTW: The double wyrm banner is exactly the nord banner I was talking about earlier. It worked much better ingame than the current one, which looks almost oriental from afar.

There were different versions and some of them I can't find. I'll put here all the banners and heraldics of Mercs. All of them had their symbolism. I'll try to resurrect some info, though there will be mistakes as I can't recall all of this correctly. Nocti would be the most appropriate person to ask.

The first banner was native "3 swords on red-white background"

It looked cool and it symbolized the unity of power and 3 leaders: Oberyn, Gnjus and Olwen. This banner was used up to the times of specific clan flags (it was replaced by newer banners but the place was reserved exclusively for Mercs in all of the custom bannerpacks).

This is the banner which symbolizes the idea of Mercenaries. Colours are saved, and they're still red and white, scales added to symbolize fighting for money, wings added to symbolize impossibility to reach Mercs?

Also there was a logo like this (without Blood and Gold stripe?). It was used in signature

After that there was a reworked banner with black background, armour and sallet got added. This version of the banner was used for more than a year I think.

After a while there was a decision to change the banner. Most of the clan and I personally wanted the same banner but with a higher resolution. Someone suggested a skull (Nocti IIRC) from Mercenaries never die.

Also some clanmembers said that they didn't like high detailed banner and Burrick IIRC said that he hated golden wings. So I made a cartoonish version of a skull with all the symbolism of Mercs. There were different version but in the end we stopped at

Red eyes symbolize blood, golden coin symbolizes money, swords symbolize skill and teamplay, skull symbolizes death, scratches and cracks symbolize fight.

I personally didn't like what we came to as skulls simply can't look cool if you draw them in heraldic way, they just look cartoonish like a rock group for children in 1980s. So I smashed the whole Nocti's brain speaking about new banner every day and asking to remake the old one. There were also a lot of different versions before we came to the final one but it is what we have now:

Let me rephrase since some people misunderstood it:

1. The merc logo is a bit cheesy but (at least the current iteration) is pretty good.
2. In the full web page size it isn't horrible.
3. When rendered in considerably smaller size to both the circle above people's heads and on textures on 3D models it's ugly as hell.

For example the Nord banner looks a shitton better in game.

But as I said before, currently it's a great troll banner since unlike those actual troll banners it isn't threathened by removal.

This thread caused the creation of glorious artwork, drama, and a new trend of telling the history behind your heraldics, I do believe I succeeded in having a bit of fun and creating something productive. (still think the merc banner looks horrible on heraldics though, and as a banner in general.)

Thing is you don't have to like it.

Merc banner was designed as Coat Of Arms, not as a banner. In the time it was made, there were no custom banner options.

What is the symbolism behind it?

Skull is obviously from the modern mercenary badge, crown of thorns is from Strategus 3 : it symbolizes the shit we've been through. As you can see the golden wings became silver that's because our rule of Calradia is a distant past now.

Banner is sticking out than the rest and that's what it meant to do. So if I ignore the trolling side of this topic, I can say it (banner) have fulfilled its purpose.
