Four attack directions, high damage, decent speed.
It's an amazing weapon if used on foot. Ignore the "Lance" part in the name.
Shorter weapons mean stabs can be pulled off closer to the target with less need for sharp spins. When I used it for a few hoplite generations, it was entirely possible to hold my own against one-handers and facehugging two-handers.
It is also less likely to be tangled up on teammates in large melee engagements.
Yeah, the 35 length difference is a pretty minor difference and length is not at all important to a hoplite.
