I tried Win 8, a lot of programs could not run on it. also the whole standard desktop and layout felt like it belonged on a tablet.

No nay never, no never no more will I use Windows 8.

Isn't Win 8 meant for tablet/phone/touch screen application?

I am not thilled by what I've heard of win h8.

No boot from USB/disc ... you know, on the off chance you want to run a linux disc to fix something, supposedly a 'security feature', but the amount of worry I have of a co-worker booting my HOME PC into some nefarious code is exactly zero.

Blue Screen : now, instead of giving you codes you might have a hope of deciphering, you get some stupid sad face emoticon and the message ' there's a problem'. Maybe you get some notice of what it is after you boot up, makes me wonder what happens when it doesn't.

Maybe my 'concern' is colored by the fact to do simple shit in win 7 requires hours of searching.

example: why the fuck do you think I want goddam text description pop up of icons on my task bar? Yes, I need that to get in my fucking way when I am looking for something in blender (or whatever) that happens to be near the bottom of the screen. Oh post in wondows help? Yay, so I can get some asshole telling me I can not disable it when not running aero(more bloatware), or some random fucktard saying how he likes it because obviously when I ask how to I get rid of it I want some stupid reason to keep it, or some official asshole essentially telling me that yes, every version is desgined to be more complicated and less user friendly then the last.
In the end I expect the working work around to be 'don't pin shit to the taskbar' because it won't fucking turn off the goddam pop-ups, and it is better to have the POS uselessly take up screen space than expect it to be useful in any way.

And the fucking auto maximize when I am moving windows around - what dipshit put that in?

Luckily there are some tools you can get from microsoft (Autoruns) which make getting rid of some of the start up shit easier; why the fuck are the guys who make the useful stuff (these guys) not making the standard stuff.

What do you mean? I just booted my Ubuntu USB and installed it :)
Just press [F12]  wheb the BIOS loads and choose USB-HDD to boot it.
Also i forgot to mention about Win8 is that it has the most stupid boot loader of them all.... Instead of giving you the choice it first boots into Win8 and then asks you if you want to to boot into win7 (yes, it's still unable to recognize/boot other OSs)

BTW, the 12.10 looks cool, think i might upgrade from 12.04 :)

Can't use Ubuntu, hate Unity (tried it 3 times so far, no success). Too lazy to install Cinnamon on Ubuntu so I'll probably install Linux Mint.
