Had to restart my game, since games for windows live magically deleted my savegames when I changed my gamertag.  :(

However, I got friends!

Had the same problem dude, go to C:\Users\BoB\Documents\NBGI\DarkSouls and select the .sl2 in the profile that you were using and copy pasta to new file that was created when you made new profile.

You're welcome.

I was lvl 80, had to sit around for ages to meet an opponent, seems like good ol' red eye orb is easiest way to duel, and you don't get any souls from winning duels in stoicism

That happened to me with Arkham City when I changed my account from offline to online. I was able to salvage the save files, though, with the help of some guy on the game's forums. Looks like there's some fix for Dark Souls as well.

Fucking GFWL, man. It's the only reason I haven't bought this game yet.
Don't.

I also had a problem with GFWS earlier today, I tabbed out of the game, tabbed in again, got the message "fps insufficent to online play (something)" then I had to restart the game, live wouldn't sign me in and you have to be signed into live for any progress to be saved :/

Also the Dark Souls trainer is realy ruining the PvP experience, if you check the leaderboards in invasions, the guy with the best score looks like this:
