In face to face combat, yes, Saladin wasn't using the same strategies that the Saraceens used during the 1st Crusades (if such a term can be coined, lets just say the first big push), where they got curbstomped most of the time. It also didn't help that the Saraceens were not united, some Emirs (not sure if that's the right term) would glady used the Crusaders push to get rid of competitors and enemies, allying themselves or taking their time before sending help to besieged cities.
During Saladin time, however, the situation was reversed, with the Europeans being split in 4 kingdoms lead by 4 differents kings an and a truckload of complicated relationship and weddings, while the Saraceens were united under Saladin and using different strategies.
