Considering America already fire bombed 90 percent of Japanese cities to literal dust and was starving millions from their blockade, I imagine civilian morale was quite low.  The military leaders on the other hand.. even until the end, some were ready to coup the Emperor to continue fighting after the second nuke.  It just made strategic sense at the time in the "strategic air bombing" campaign we were waging to use the most efficient force possible to spare American resources, lives, and end the war as fast as possible.

War ending as fast as possible was the main goal exactly! Human loss wasn't at all the issue or we wouldn't of Firebombed Japanese citys. In fact a raid of Firebombing on Tokyo actually caused more death then the Nuke on Nagasaki. But Japan and the US both didn't want the Russians gaining the Main Japanese islands.

The Allies (Especially US) were afraid of a Soviet controlled Europe in my opinion, that's why they stepped in and landed on the West.

If you think about it from a humane point of things, D-Day and all of that was unnecessary deaths on the Western Front.

But if it doesn't happen, then there would've been more soviet puppet-states later on, I think.
