Not only that are Air force can gain air superiority within a few weeks of the world. And are ground forces can deploy to any country anywhere within 78hours with divisional size. (Desert Shield was proof)

FIRST OF ALL A LARGE SCALE WAR WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN! And back to the point... The USAF tactic of "Kill Box" superiority paired with the F-22 and F-38 would completely decimate the enemy. As well as the fact that we would simply use cruise missal to destroy there major air facilities. The first day air superiority doesn't mean the first day of combat but rather the first day of engagement. The Iraqi airforce was the 3rd largest in the worlds. First day of Desert Shields air deployment the few aircraft they had left were decimated.

Speaking of Nukes there is quite a few prominent Japanese Scientist that had small proof and many eyewitness of the fact that the Japanese nuclear bomb program successively tested a nuke before the US. The entirety of North Korea was dedicated to Japans Weapon manufacture and Development during WW2 and before the iron curtain covered up the remaining evidence the Japanese and OSS destroyed all scientfic research documents. VERY VERY interesting research papers on that are out. I saw a online seminar about it and it was quite interesting how well the US covered up the technology of the Japanese before and after ww2.

Actually, a ground invasion of Japan would probably have cost more both in money and life spent, perhaps the 2nd nuke was overkill, but the first one seemed like the lesser of 2 evils, mind you, I am not sure if people knew the long lasting effects of nukes back then.

I believe the Purple Hearts that were made in preperation for Operation Downfall (mainland invasion of Japan) are still being handed out to wounded veterans today, since we were estimating more casualties in those battles then have happened in all of history since.

If you want to read a very interesting first-hand account of being a Marine grunt in the Pacific during WW2, I recommend reading With The Old Breed.  It was one of the sources for the great HBO miniseries "The Pacific" and is probably the most vivid, honest, and downright disturbing depiction of war on that scale.  The guy, Eugene Sledge, was a mortar man for the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa, and he spares the reader nothing.  If you read it, you can start to appreciate saving millions more Americans and Japanese lives from enduring that kind barbarism.

Another interesting subject is the chocolate chip cookie nuclear bomb project, I remember reading a book about it once.

They could've made some "dirty" atom bombs, but the head scientist sabotaged the project. Sadly I forgot his name.

But considering how low Japan always was on resources in general, and the situation they were in, I doubt that they could've made it as pure and effective as the US bombs were.

On the effects of Nuclear Fallout, There wasn't even that much testing in that stage, as far as I know. All the videos and stuff you always see online, is from the 50's at best, if not later. Scientists could only give a rough estimate, from a year or two, to many decades.

I agree Bob, the second nuke was just overkill. Not that the first one was just or anything, but breaking the Japanese morale with something like blocking their Island might not work out either.

A ground invasion operation would've been catasthropic, If you just think about the Jap morale of "until the last man".

Bob fun fact. The actual reason the Japonese surrenederd there mainland to the US was because they didn't want Japan sepereated by Russia and the United states. They surrenederd the day the Russians captured Manchuria. The Nukes were just a good propaganda scheme by the US. The Russians were promised a even share in Japans mainland the min we woulda landed on Toyota beach (We named all the planned beaches after Jap car company's). BTW Us during WW2 was a greedy basterd! We supplied both sides of the war untill 1940 then became a super power of lend lease. Then after the Russians supplied with are Tanks Steel and Officer training bounced back they deployed number that made the entire eastern front seem useless. Infact the US deployment and loss compared to the Russians prove my point. The Russians could of won by themselfs (With are hardware). BUT we wanted to become a colonial power and have say in the world after WW2. It worked!

Considering America already fire bombed 90 percent of Japanese cities to literal dust and was starving millions from their blockade, I imagine civilian morale was quite low.  The military leaders on the other hand.. even until the end, some were ready to coup the Emperor to continue fighting after the second nuke.  It just made strategic sense at the time in the "strategic air bombing" campaign we were waging to use the most efficient force possible to spare American resources, lives, and end the war as fast as possible.

I watched ever "The Pacific" and it is one of my favorite HBO series (love the MG part in like the 2nd one where he kill like 65 Japs cause it was based on a real story!). But if you add up all the American losses in the Pacific theater it wouldn't match the losses of the BATTLE of Kursk! haha The loses wern't are issue! It was the Russians! The Allies (Especially US) were afraid of a Soviet controlled Europe in my opinion, that's why they stepped in and landed on the West.

If you think about it from a humane point of things, D-Day and all of that was unnecessary deaths on the Western Front.

But if it doesn't happen, then there would've been more soviet puppet-states later on, I think.
