Alright, and let's consider that everyone got scared off of the uber high bidding to buy an item cheap. Everyone but let's say George.

The highest bit is 100k

So, George puts a bid of 1m for an +1 item. No one else tries this "trick"
Will George get the item for 100.001 gold?

So, I wonder how many Georges will be out there

Oh, and by the way, if the buyer gets it for 150.001 gold, will the seller get 1m - 5% or 150.001 - 5%?

Okay let me explain, in ebay people have a reserve, however when the reserve is set for ebay it's not listed as the highest price- is that what you're saying is happening in the auction house? As in:

Player 1 bids 150K

Player 2 bids 1Million

The maximum bid is now shown in the listings as 150K + 1 or is it shown as 1Million?

Actually, if it showed up as 1 million, what would stop other buyers from just trolling all those guys and bidding 999999 gold? No risk involved, but you could grief people by making them pay their maximum price.

Obviously academic since it doesn't work like that, but anyway.
Don't.

A.W.E.S.O.M.E. So you're saying the buyer pays 150.001 gold, and the seller receives 950k?

If so... The whole system is supposed to fight inflation. Imagine how easily bugged this can be, 150k turns into 950k :)

And it will happen every time. George1 bids 1m, but George2 bids 2m. George 1 loses 1m, but the seller receives 2m. Oh glory!

Yeah okiN, but others say the bid doesn't show up.

Yes, I'm just pointing out that even in that case there would be a counter in place.

And no, what the heck are you talking about? Why would the seller receive more gold than is bid? That's crazy talk.
Don't.

Jesus.......... OK listen carefully:
1. player_A puts a sword_of_war onto the auction
2. the highest bid now is 0g
3. player_B wants to buy it and sets his maximum* bid for 10000g
4. the highest* bid now is 1g (that's what everybody sees)
5. player_C wants to buy it for 5000g and sets his maximum* bid for 5000g.
6. since player_B set his maximum* bid higher than player_C he automatically* overbids player_C by 1g so the highest* bid now is 5001g
7. when player_D bids his maximum 6000 gold, again player_B automatically overbids him with 6001g.
8. at this point the highest* bid is 6001g by player_B
9. when the auction is over (if no other bids where made)* player_B gets the item and [(his maximum bid)-(highest bid)=3999g], player_C gets back his 5k gold, player_D gets back his 6k gold and player_A gets [(highest bid) - 5% = 5700g]
I hope i made it as easy as possible.......

So this system relies on trolls to troll scammers? L O L O L O L

Legit.

I still prefer a more traditional way. But hey, we do have enough trolls for this to work 24/7.

Oh I get you now
Well, this isn't as stupid as I thought, but the simple bidding system would do.

Like, you know, I bid 10k, 10k shows up. Make a minimum of 1k up bidding, so that the next guy has to offer minimally 11k.
Would easier the things up :O

But yeah, that's not a bad system out there.

totally agree with you here.
The more complicated you make the system the less people understand it.
But give devs some time, they just check thing out. I'm sure they will use the feedback and make something that will sute the most of us.
