That roof scene dialogue is pretty awesome. You can even get the sense the actor in red is like "wtf am I saying" at points

These are some thought provoking/ unconventional stories:

Eraserhead
Mulholland Drive
Naked Lunch
Videodrome
Stalker
Jacob's Ladder
The Machinist
Memento
The Prestige
Vanilla Sky
Eyes Wide Shut

Anything I should add there?

Ok so far the movies I've not seen and which sparked my interest are:

The Outlaw Josey Wales,
A Dirty Carnival,
La Haine
and
Walk the line

Next on my Watch-Again-List are:
Clerks,
Dance with wolves
and
In Bruges

for everyone who liked In Bruges, I sincerely recommend "The Guard". Directed by the brother of the director of In Bruges. Excellent dialogue and writing:

If you like Clint's movies I would like to recommend also "Where eagles dare". It's not black and white movie like in that pic. Really twisted plot. I liked it because it was so twisted and situation kept changing all the time. chocolate chip cookies and shit. Really enjoyable piece of movie history imo. I left some good movies out of my list because they are kinda obvious Clint pieces too. Like Gran Torino, Dirty Harry etc.

Oh and Heartbreak Ridge belongs to that list. Simply because it is awesome and maybe underrated movie. It also has this awesome scene with a quote to remember ^^. Maybe some Duke Nukem named guy ripped the shit down that neck :D

Respect. :)

From what I can assume about your taste, perhaps you should watch Melancholia, Pi and Dark City if you haven't. Seems you like alternative mindfucks.. :D Then watch Antichrist too. Shutter Island and many other films are also great, but too much in that direction would be too mainstream to fit your list, besides you've probably seen them.

Check out some of the old noires. Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard should fit nicely to what I assume you like.

*Perhaps you know Vanilla sky is a remake of "Open Your Eyes", a very decent spanish film. Another fun film I saw lately is the italian film:  Una pura formalità (aka A Pure Formality) With Polanski and Depardieu as the main characters. It also has the themes going through your list.

Only seen Dark City and Shutter Island of those you mentioned, and both a pretty good too, especially Shutter Island. I will look into those others sometime, thx

Was mostly trying to put together a mindfuck list since someone mentioned Eraserhead. My main list is on page 1, so I don't just like this type in the list :D. That mindfuck list are all worth watching though imo

I've read pretty much everything by Philip K Dick and his stories can have that kind of theme going through them. Just wish we had more PKD movies, only decent one is Blade Runner (which is really just an adaptation) and A Scanner Darkly, which wasn't bad but didn't quite have the impact of the book. Minority Report was also decentish but don't think it had much in common with the book iirc

Grumbs watch The Fountain if you haven't. Maybe you won't like the whole movie, but conquistador part is pure gold. I wish Aronofsky made the whole movie about it, it would be one of the best I've ever watched.

Story is confusing but you'll definitely understand the main theme of the movie. Picture and photography are simply beautiful, soundtrack is exquisite and acting is top notch (best ever performance for Hugh Jackman).

For me, movie is like one of Borges novels in motion (which I enjoy immensely).

Other than that I really like the realism presented in Bullet or some movies which most people find boring and even repulsing, like The Postman.

And of course 13th Warrior, my favorite fantasy movie. My favorite sci-fi movie is Robocop, I like brutality presented in that movie.

Ah but there are so many good movies, I don't know where to start..

Angel Heart is a good one as mentioned earlier.
If you like Leone films, be sure to watch Once Upon a Time in the West. Epic western.
Hitchcock films are also a must for you. Vertigo, North by Northwest and Rear Window..

Which leads us to the man behind Starship Troopers. Paul Verhoven, a very "funny" director. Try to watch Basic Instinct again, now with Ironic Hitchcock glasses. It's great great entertainment.

Did you see Twin Peaks the first season? If you like Lynch.. This is as good as it gets. You can safely skip the second season btw.. But NOT the first!

You saw Enter The Void? It goes well with a joint.

Personally, I like everything by Tarkovsky and Trier, the great great great finnish director Aki Kaurosmaki, Spielberg, and actually I like everything, good or bad!

so yeah.. :D

And documentaries! (almost) everything by Herzog:

Thanks Leshma I heard of The Fountain before but haven't got around to seeing it yet. I haven't actually heard of Borges, anything in particular by him I should read?

Thomek Twin Peaks has been on my list of stuff to watch for ages. I have a collection of Hitchcock films, watched most of them now. Haven't seen the Leone western yet or Enter the Void

I do want to get into foreign cinema. Only seen Stalker by Tarkovsky which was quite a unique film. La Haine which I mentioned before is really worth a watch. Apart from that, Pan's Labyrinth was OK and I like the old John Woo movies.

In term of documentaries, be sure to watch The Century of the Self at some point.

Threads is a movie in a faux documentary style about nuclear war thats worth a watch. Am quite a fan of post apocalyptic scenarios/nuclear war movies, Dr Strangelove etc. Saw The Road semi recently which was pretty good for a post apocalyptic movie. Oh and The Book of Eli wasn't bad

Also a big fan of WW2 stuff. If you want to see a hard boiled realism based WW2 movie, then try Come and See
