Check these videos out, really shows that the Europeans did have a martial art, and not some crude way of fighting, its quite beautiful.

Of course europeans had martial arts.. they didn't conquer most of the world with baguettes and bad weather.

Actually, cannons and muskets require rather few training or sophisticated techniques. (Doesn't count for the conquistadors and such, ofc)

The world is split in two categorie.
The one digging, and the one with the loaded crossbow.

But never forget that the one digging, got a big shovel.

30% xbow dmg reduction in bad weather was a well documented complaint back then, haha

I'm not denying that the europeans had martial arts or anything, but which half of the world are you talking about , exactly ? Europe? Most of the time they were busy conquering each other,i don't know if that counts. Excuse me, but it's like saying that the japanese martial arts helped the japanese conquer...the whole Japan.

Apart from the Reconquista (which is not exactly a conquest ,but more like  retaking the lands hist. belonging to them), some temrorary successes during the Crusades and the conquests of the Byzantine Empire (which of course started declining after centuries passed and i'm not sure most people would count Byz. Emp. as a "true european" country).

Other than that, i honestly don't see what you mean. The europeans only started to seriously expand "outside of Europe" when the martial arts of the middle ages were either long forgotten or remained as the last resort weapon.

Sorry for the offtopic.

The throws are pretty bloody awful but the swords stuff in that first video was great.

I'm not skilled with swords at all but that at the very least looked freaking cool. The throws however were the worst parts of Aikido on its worst days, that kind of stuff just doesn't work unless the person you are dealing with is a complete fool or is letting you do it.
Fammi un pompino!

Good news everybody! It's not nut cancer :)
Bad news everybody, I got dumped :(

Agree with Frank all of those moves are obviously staged and in any of those circumstances base on foot placement and opponent balance I would have used completely different techniques.

In fact with all of those strikes I would have been off the line, behind the attacker and have cut across the body.

Speed is just too slow and techniques too deliberate.

(Have been doing Aikido and tae kwon do since I was 9)

Really want to try Kendo as well but bokken fighting is my weakest point, give me a Jo any day.

Thats why we need a video of real sparing.

not with  deadly weapons... but a type of weapon that allows you to move your body at a fast speed, which strikes hard enough to stun and cease a fight when they are good (but not injure), and with a weight that is enough that you will become tired to simulate battle effects.

A couple of years ago they discovered a book in a monastery about the martial arts taught by knights to knights. It shows knights were more than simple brutes that actually got taught a wide array of martial techniques ranging from boxing, wrestling, holds and throws and of course fighting with weapons. More and more European-style fighting schools are popping up where they try to teach you according to the lessons from this book and what other things are left. Oddly enough, little is known of the martial traditions of knights (from what I know!).

Great vids, very inspiring watch :)
