Advice on Archer/Sword/Shield build?
« on: March 04, 2011, 09:04:20 pm »
+1
Hi I was hoping I could get some advice how to best advance my character as mentioned in the title iyts for a Archer/Sword/Shield build.

I am level 24 gen 1.

One Handed   98
Archery           97

Ironflesh             4
Power Strike     5
Shield             4
Athletics             2
Power Draw     5
Weapon master 4

I have noticed looking through other archer builds that not many seem to do much with power strike.

I realise I wont be able to get really high skills in any particular aspect but what should I concentrate on improving please?

Any help, much appreciated.

I have a similar goal - and so far not too successful.

Main prob: archery has been totally crippled, and needs absurdly high WPF to achieve anything (e.g. compared with xbow or throwing), anything below 150 shoots somewhere into the wilderness...
My last build had around 130 in archery and the rest in 1h - and I got most of my (few) kills in melee, lol

Advice: get more powerdraw than your bow needs, at least 1 or 2, improves accuracy and damage a lot.
Hermit Status report : feeling a little social. Threatening melee my old friends with a comeback. Greasing the string of his old longbow. Carving certain names into the tips of his arrows...

Get at least 130 wpfs in archery or get pure 1h/shield.

But you shouldnt do any hybrid with bow, better get xbow. Even light.

Put all wpf in archery, else it doesn't make sense to take a bow since they need alot of WPF.
And with only 1 slot for arrows, you won't really do fine as archer.
If you plan on meleeing mainly then thrower or xbow hybrid would make more sense.

Maybe..
18 str
18 agi

6 PS
6 shield
5 athletic
6 PD
6 WM

Here my suggestion with 2h instead:
18 str
21 agi

6 PS
4 athletic
6 PD
7 Wm

This would be actually a quite nice build.
And... all WPF in archery.

Advice: get more powerdraw than your bow needs, at least 1 or 2, improves accuracy and damage a lot.

Hm, seems correct. No huge accuracy buff tho.
However the arrows are so fucking slow already that you have no other choice as taking the highest PD bow that you can use.

My last gen:

1h: 85
archery: 140

PD 6
PS 6
ATH 6
WM 6

I think in the end it was a fairly nice build with warbow and bodkins/khergit arrows, but before I often had the feeling the bow wasn't really worth it. If you want to melee with 1h, than really get that 50+ wpf and as much ps as your strength allows imo, but for archering high wpf is really important.

If you have a lonely sniper position and do not want to move: agreed.
Otherwise: there are alway a lot of dead archers, esp. hybrid archers, lol, and you can loot their ammo, in addition you can pick them from the wall/ground. I usually run out of life before I run out of arrows... ;-)

Thanks for the advice. Is there a way of changing any of my stats or would I have to start a new character?

Do you think I could still be a decent archer if I put the rest of my wpf into archery and keep 1 handed at 98?

Depends on what you call decent ;-)
You will be able to shoot a few guys, but you do not get real precision with the warbow or at least strongbow.

Heirloom an item that you suspect you will be using often/long and like. You have a long time to decide until lvl 31. If you retire at lower level, you don't get a heirloom. It still might be kind of worth it if you really want to change your char badly, because you can get back to level 20 much faster than sitting it out until level 31. I'd simply say decide after what you think about your char now. If you think it's ok, get to level 31, if you say I really want better archery I'd retire now and put more skills in bow next time (ironflesh f.e. is waste for archer imo, you must use light armor to shoot better, and it is only good for heavy armor).

Idk... I had a 7 PD & 130 wpf archer hybrid and it was effective, but with polearms. I'm guessing a 21/15 archer/shielder would be feasible too, although I really think a 2h weapon meshes better with archery.

Bow, big differenc e comapred to 1hed weapons.  ALso, 1h shielder si better with xbow becasue only 1 set of ammo and xbow ammo lasts longer than bow ammo because of rate of fire.

Yes, the ammo count with a onehander and shield...brr

Also, imo, 1h needs more wpf to be effective then a polearm or a twohander. Also, if you have a eg. 21/15 build it's nice to have ironflesh too so you can take a bit of fire.

I think, you can be even more effective with polearm only.
