Shame they've managed to force internet providers in Finland to block it. Not that it's hard to circumvent.

Yah, but once it become legal to do it to one provider, then it's only a matter of time before it's closed down for all providers. All the internet providers are doing the same thing. The rest of the cases are in court.

And yes, people do use other sites, DNS solutions or VPN or just using other URLs that haven't been stopped yet.

While I certainly love the way, how all the big sites (wiki, google, wordpress and so on) gather attention and anonymous does their part, I think what the author of xkcd said about it last year is still true:

Exactly. But what is important is the symbolic effect.

Such attacks against freedom can't be left unresponded.

So they'll be forced to move? Awesome, way to go US, driving away some of your most innovative and productive corporations to the rest of the world. It's very generous of you. Even if they don't move, assuming the law passes, it's only a matter of time before others fill the vaccuum. It's even more of an incentive for others to not follow in their footsteps.

This.

I don't really see the logic behind the political (because it obviously is) move. A statesman, even totally oblivious of freedom etc. would know that bringing down "US" (servers in the virginia) internet businesses is exactly like shooting yourself in the foot economically. The content industry can go fuck itself. Most of the actual culture content produced in the world is fucking free.

The backwards media mega corps are of course going desperate, so they did what has proven successful time and time again in history:

Blame it on the others.

This, coupled with the fact of what is actually stated in the bill and this is starting to smell an awful lot like mid-western Europe during a certain time period which we are all very familiar with...

...

Now of course I might be overreacting but it's shockingly similar. (Hey economy is going to shit, not our fault obviously. It's the foreign pirates with their shady websites stealing (notice the parallel once again) our stuff. But if we just give the govt surpreme powers to deal with this everything will be fine m'kay? Let the witchhunt begin!)

Also what Oberyn said.

ACTA's shit that has been going on for a LONG time. Luckily, the European parliament has been negative towards the proposition since the representatives have denied official EU requests of making the negotiations public.

USA on the other hand fully support the secrecy of negotiations, the GOVERNMENT dnying the requests of making the documents official.

TL:DR Yeah, fuck this ACTA shit.

It's not even what that woman is saying that I distrust, it's the way she's saying it.

Here's the actual and current wording of SOPA http://judiciary.house.gov/hearings/pdf/112%20HR%203261.pdf
Found here : http://search.house.gov/htbin/search

So yeah, if you read it carefully, you can see she's full of shit. As well as the whole pro-SOPA lobby that pretends the bill can't censor the web. It definetly can. And they definetly never read it.

Here's the part that would even have infringed the Magna Carta :

Page 13 :

"RELIEF.—On application of the Attorney
2 General following the commencement of an action
3 under this section, the court may issue a temporary
4 restraining order, a preliminary injunction, or an in5
junction, in accordance with rule 65 of the Federal
6 Rules of Civil Procedure, against a registrant of a
7 domain name used by the foreign infringing site or
8 an owner or operator of the foreign infringing site
9 or, in an action brought in rem under paragraph
10 (2), against the foreign infringing site or a portion
11 of such site, or the domain name used by such site,
12 to cease and desist from undertaking any further ac13
tivity as a foreign infringing site."

That is, shoot first, think second. Guilty until proved innocent.

The following part extends this "ceizure" of service to virtually anything US based. That is, search engines, payment sites, advertisers etc. are explicitly mentioned.

Actually, the best way to circumvent this law if it ever passes is to use that tiny loophole and make the ceizure of service to foreign sites impossible. It may be possible to design a crafty network architecture and a system into which even the owners couldn't delete entries without crashing the whole thing (and then, the censorship could be declared as unreasonable).
