Before the patch according to the ultimate archer guide, the Sarranid leather armour offered the best defence for it's weight (4,5) but now after the patch it is 6,1 and I don't know if it still offers the best for weight-defence ratio.

I managed to work out a set of gear with 7.7 weight, which is exactly how much you can have before taking a loss to WPF.

Steppe cap with fur -   12 armor                        0.2 weight*3=0.6
Studded leather coat - 30 body, 10 leg armor   6.6 weight
Khergit leather boots - 14 armor                       0.5 weight

                    Total:  12 head, 30 body, 24 leg    7.7 weight

Before the patch I had 20 head armor, leather gloves and rus cavalry boots without going over the magic 7.7 weight.  Sacrifices had to be made.
I know this may not help the OP much since he doesn't like the look of the studded leather, but if you spend a little time tweaking your gear you can get a nice combination without losing WPF.  Keep in mind that going slightly over 7.7 won't hurt your WPF much, just don't go too high above that.

You just mustn't have more than 7.7weight in all you armor.
But remember:
Head Wx3
Body Wx1
Gloves Wx2
Boots Wx1
(W=weight)

Is this still true?

7.7 Weight?  Head x3?  Gloves x2?

And does this apply to Throwing as well?

Wasn't it more like Head x2, Gloves x4 and weight limit = 10 before the WPF penalty sets in?

Anyway, on topic:
I like running around with a Byrnie, Leather Gloves and Hunter boots, no helmet. I prefer the extra body armour over a light helmet as I've never really seen a light helmet (<1 weight) save my life.
When i want to use a helmet, i go for one of the ~30 Head armour ones and a Padded Leather armour.

Note: I'm not a pure archer though, 21/18 archer/1H hybrid.
As a pure archer you might want to get at least some head armour against though occasional throwing daggers/etc.
Alternatively you can try to keep your weight as low as possible and always run away from all fights, but that'll be really hard with the new Arrow weight. And people will hate you (even more than non-kiting archers :P )

All what you need to know about archer armour is you can't go over 10 weigth
Head armour is 2*weigth
hand armour is 4*weigth
Body and leg armour is weisth with no multiplier

It's a good idea to have a head armour, you won't die in one-hit from 1h, unless they are mounted. You can also survive hit from heavy lance on low speed :D
IMO best body armour is atm heavy aketon, you can took with it proper gloves and head armour.
You shouldn't take care about leg armour, boots for archer are only for good looking :D
Archer forever :D

Super thanks Steevee (and everyone that replied)!

1) Does this apply to Throwing or Crossbows as well?  Or just Archery?

2) Is the running-Athletics cap still at 6.3kg?  Hope this makes sense.  I remember back in the day, there being something where if you went over 6.3kg total weight, it would start to slow you down... or something like that.  A better way of saying it might be... if you are under 6.3, your armor would not effect your run speed.
