Im a plant guy, so heres a little about "humus" or "Humous" (not to be confused with Hummus)


 What is normally called compost. Your local garden centre will have all sorts. Peat is humus, it's semi rotted moss. Grass cutting can be rotted a little and used as compost.
I usually buy rotted horse manure in bags, doesn't smell and it make the plants grow beautifully.
Soil needs humus to retain moisture, to keep an open texture, to provide nutrients and to encourage the growth of micro fungi which help many plants to take up those nutrients.
