My reward formula for mercenaries that fight in our Strategus battles:


X gold * kills^2 / (deaths OR kills/5, whichever is greater)

So basically the better your kill ratio, the more money you get, up to 5:1 KDR.  (I tried doing flat KDR but then you get some archer who goes 20:1 and breaks the bank...)


"X" is variable.  I can adjust it so that our total payout is, say, 2500 strat gold or whatever we decide is good for that battle.  High performers get the bulk of it but everyone (who gets a kill) gets a cut.

when 3 of us have axes in hand and pulled back ready to throw it reminds me of the Quad mount 28mm anti-aircraft guns in WW2 they often had on aircraft carriers

Got me a set of masterwork heavy axes today so joined the club. will miss my jarids but axes have some advantages at closer range like faster release and I find a bit more accuracy up close too.

Yeah, I have an easier time hitting with axes and if you miss, they don't tend to vanish into the distance like the javelin-type weapons.

I just wish I could pick up other people's throwing weapons -- lots of jarids and spears out there.  But PT6 is way too much wpf required unless you want to wear light armor, and then you're basically a pure thrower.


Incidentally, one nice advantage of throwing vs crossbows as an infantry backup weapon: crossbows are almost useless against cavalry, unless you can stand somewhere they can't hit you.  Foot crossbow vs mounted crossbow, the mounted guy will just knock you down over and over while he continues to reload and shoot.  Even if you have a pikeman bodyguard, a horse crossbowman will interrupt half your reloads.

Whereas anyone trying to knock down a thrower will be lucky not to get an axe in the face.  Crossbow horsemen usually stand well back and shoot at me with pretty limited success from 30+ meters because they have an axe stuck in their horse (or leg) from the time they came closer.

Slamz, if you have PT 6 and it gives you the message but still have enough to pick up PT 5, you can.

Happened to me my 2h gen. I'd get the message every round no matter the armor, but still was able to pick up jarids. Everyone throws jarids.= D

Yeah but I always tailor my wpf to exactly match PT4 + my heaviest armor.

Incidentally, easy way to do that:
* Get plenty of spare wpf saved up.
* Get your throwing wpf to about 80 or so
* Select heavy throwing axes
* Start the round, get red text, throw one axe at your feet
* Now add 1 wpf and try to pick up the axe.  Repeat this until you can.

I need 87 wpf with mail gauntlets, nordic warlord helm, light kuyak and mail boots.

I could get PT 5 (or 6) and just sometimes wear really light armor but I generally don't want to do that.  I forget how much wpf I needed in that suit to get PT 6 fully powered up but I think it was over 110wpf, which even at 6 WM didn't leave "a lot" for 2H.


I think they should ease the wpf requirements for throwing.  I don't know if PT 10 is even feasible, while PS 10 is like ho-hum.

I have PT 5/108 WPF and can wear medium armor without penalty.

nordic huscarl helm
banded armor
splinted leather greaves over mail
leather gloves

total 46 body, 44 leg, 40 head.

Just had to sacrifice 2-3  armour points by going from mail hand armour to leather. Remember glove weight has like a 6x or 8x multiplier effect to throwing penalty, helms have a 2x or 4x penalty also (I forget exactly) so trimming those down a bit can really reduce WPF penalties if you're trying to be an armoured thrower or archer.
