You can play around with the d_init file to restrict number of children and overall population. I'll usually stop the population at around 100 with a max of 40 children to reach the 140 dwarf limit so King shows up, unless I'm doing a mega-project causing a lot of random casualties and requiring a lot of uristpower.

Incidentally wardogs suck, trade with elves for Giant creatures or capture/tame/raise them yourself, from surface or caves. A dodge-me trap with a pit of Giant Black Mambas is cool.

I love reading stories about people's forts. I got this game on two separate occasions and couldn't get over the UI (see: fucking none) I am now content to read the stories and laugh my ass off.  :P

but seriously, if Toady gave half of a shit about making this game playable for people who don't want to smash their face on a desk for thirty hours in a row, just to get the extreme basics down... Everyone and their dog would know about, and love, it.

UI is not that terrible after getting used to. The only thing that's annoying for me is that same objects are assigned to various keys depending on what menu you're using, ie. ordering a statue to be made at masons workshop and actually placing same statue later from build menu.

Though that Gnomoria guy could instead of making a rip-off get Toady to hire him to make proper graphics and ui.
Mods compatible with cRPG. New crosshairs, textures, sounds, yay.

Fuck yeah!
This game isn't about being skillful as much as its about saying things in general chat that enrage people who then go to murder you but in their rage they make dumb mistakes which gets them killed.

I will always remember the dwarves in the 4th DLC for Borderlands 2 saying "Losing is fun" when they die. The amount of obscure references in that game is amazing.
