Is it taboo to fight for the defenses?  If clans join the defense of a city, I'm assuming that will likely result in them being considered an enemy or target of the faction trying to take over the city?

Only if you brought like your whole clan to fight against them and actually try to win.

Most NPC defenses consist of smathering of random players doing a disorganized half-assed job with shitty gear.

I have some questions about strategus and cant find an answer for it...

I would like to join that battle, but what do I put in as payment and comment if I want to join the defender? Is there a cost limit? Who decides who can join a side?
Do I get my own equipment I bought on strategus or part of the equipment from the attacker/defender?
What happens if I win or loose a fight as part of an attacking/defending party?

A neutral village will most likely hire you no matter what your build is or how your reputation is. So you just need to find the amount of Gold the neutral village is willing to pay for you. As you hit the price you will get immediatly accepted. When you apply for a faction for example the fallens in this case, you will have to state your build and the payment usually depends on your behaviour on the battlefield.

The equipment you can choose from is the equipment of the commander. Your Equip does not count for those battles only for your own.
As a merc the outcome of the battle doesn´t effect you at all. If you are the party who gets defeated you will lose all your Gold and Troops and equip and will get teleported to a random location.

If you win a battle against a village you become the owner of this village.

Somthing weirds is going on i have been signed up since ysterday but i havent been accepted but people who signed up after are (someone signed up a couple of hours before people were added and is on it ...)

Try signing up for 1 Gold (0 gold doesn't work). The Ai tries to get the best players (=level) for the lowest gold amount.
