My first hiking tour with my father in the vosges, alsace. I was pretty interested in WW I stuff back then and felt amazed by all the bunkers and trenches around the lingekopf, reichsackerkopf and all the other places of major trenchwars in that area. It was just an overall great experience to explore all theese places and feel the history written in the countryside. From today's point of view i was very naive back then (not abnormal for a 9 year old boy), even tho my father also showed me two giant graveyards, one from each side to teach me it wasn't fun, games and heroism back then.
I also have very bad memories from this tour, specifically seeing a grave of a 12 year old soldier. It was very hard to understand how someone could be so desperate to send a guy barely a few years older than me into a dirty, cruel and deadly war.
Another really great memory is my first self planned tour on the Sormlandsleden in Sweden. It was just me and 5 friends, all around 14-15 year old. I felt amazing the whole 2 weeks, walking around 20-25 km every day and finding great places to sleep in a tent and make a campfire every evening. I still do at least 1 hiking tour every summer, can't miss the feeling of total freedom and being a bit of a vagabond. Being a pretty heavy smoker I always enjoy the few weeks of not feeling the need to smoke while being on a hiking trip.
I had a grat and happy childhood, there's barely any bad memory I can think of. The only time I felt really bad for a longer period was when I started to go to university and just felt bad and bored the whole time. That made me realise I'm not the type of person that enjoys sitting in clumsy rooms with bad air and unnatural white light all day. I enjoy working outside and am really happy with my job where I build gardens for people (there doesn't seem to be a good translation for the German name "Garten- und Landschaftsbauer"). Of course it is hard, sometimes connected to alot of stress and can be dammn annoying during winter or in heavy rain but it's honest work and I never had a customer that was unhappy with the results I create.
Hope that braught a bit of light into this dark thread ;-)
