Sadly it doesn't make your original post true for majority of melee cav. One arrow from an occational HA is not the end of the world when you're able to go away from them but you're fucked for good if they can follow you.

Ride back towards your footmen who hopefully still have some xbows or archers alive.

That's exactly what I try to do from the moment I get into such trouble. The problem is, they usually don't give a fuck even if they were alive...
