I believe the Chinese players like cavalry formations moving together in charge or flanking, not just single super maneuverable horseman/cav taking over the field. If you promote less use of maneuverability for cavalry, cavalry will be great for a charging formation.
Also, the Japanese did use Yumi on horseback

That was for archery competitions/ceremony type things. Horseback archery was not widely used in Japan during actual battles.

But there is nothing wrong with adding more thing from other cultures. People can also use the Yumi as a foot archer, which was actually what you are saying also. Or you are saying it should be changed to 2 slots to promote Yumi foot archers.

The Yumi is a bigger bow, and is better than the long bow in real life (according to a video in another thread i posted) than a tartar, and it naturally should release more power into the arrow?

Yumi looks like a Japanese longbow used by infantry. These are photographs of actual archers and samurai from the 1800s. Some of them don't include bows but damn are they nice pictures.
I understand you want to change Yumi 1>2 slots so there is Yumi foot archers, but since it "can" be used on horseback, not sure if the admins will change that.

So there should be some horses with low maneuver, but very high charge. I see.
I think that is actually the most awesome and genius solution for heavy cav. It would make playing it alone nearly useless, but when you are with a few other heavy cavalry they will be absolutely instoppable, which is historically correct.
Holy shit, I love this idea. Nobody liked the stupid backstabbing cav bs anyway lol.

You can always make the armour so high it's pretty much impossible to stop or kill the horse, idk it's probably hard to do but I think it would be great.
It's only because we allowed peasants to stop horses with pitchfork that playing in formation got fucking useless, even pikers get abandoned because even people that use halfswording can fuck up cav if they are being charged.

As you can see the "handgrip" of the yumi bow is not centered in the middle but its lower, Some historians debate that the reason for that is that you can lift it easyer over the side of the horse (Switch from aiming left to right and vice versa). Because if it was centered it would be (almost) to long on the bottom.
Edit: Wiki:
"The yumi is asymmetric; According to the All Nippon Kyudo Federation, the grip (nigiri) has to be positioned at about two thirds of the distance from the upper tip.
The upper and lower curves also differ. Several hypotheses have been offered for this asymmetric shape. Some believe it was designed for use on a horse, where the yumi could be moved from one side of the horse to the other with ease. However, the grip position had emerged before horseback archery became widespread in Japan.
Others claim that asymmetry was needed to enable shooting from a kneeling position. Yet another explanation is the characteristics of the wood from a time before laminating techniques. In case the bow is made from a single piece of wood, its modulus of elasticity is different between the part taken from the treetop side and the other side. A lower grip balances it.
The hand holding the yumi may also experience less vibration due to the grip being on a vibration node of the bow. A perfectly uniform pole has nodes at 1/4 and 3/4 of the way from the ends, or 1/2 if held taut at the ends – these positions will change significantly with shape and consistency of the bow material."

Yes, add mechanics. Don't streamline builds. This is what makes cRPG unique.

cRPG isn't a game based on formations and never will be. Hell the concept of "Warband" is small skirmishes to begin with. You will never, ever see "formations" of heavy cav succeed in this game no matter what stats you throw into it, and if in the process you fuck up horse's ability to maneuver you will just ruin the class. No one can even afford light cav in current Strategus, let alone Elite Wedge Formation HEavy Cavalry..

I understand what you mean, shangai brave, but you are wrong, for at least two reasons.
First, most maps do not fit a charging group of cav. We get 2 or 3 open plains out of the 50 villages and cities and then those "open plains" are actually mountains. Second, Warband is mostly a skirmish game in which everyone is independent and tries to survive independently. We don't have enough players to simulate charges like in a Total War game for example.
For a cavalry charge to be effective you need to be able to hit your target. Horses in this game already lack maneuver which forces them to backstab unaware enemies, because unaware enemies don't dodge. Decreasing maneuver further will mean even more backstabbing and even less charging.

I reckon 2 slot usable from horseback would suit balance, but not satisfy realism demands raised here.
On the maneuverability of horses (which should be a separate thread) the promotion of formations would be a good feature for the heavy armoured horses, with perhaps a speed bonus akin to the shield bonus for adjacent cavalry players.

It would work if your horse didn't just come to a complete halt as soon as it touches something like a daisy, meaning you have to start accelerating again if it was more lenient and realistic it would be awesome, I wish horses fell over and jumped around instead of just stopping and rearing, hope they add this in battlegrounds.
Riding horses in this game feels and handles like driving cars in dayZ..

Dear Mr. Shanghai Brave,
I regret to inform you that these changes you suggested will most likely not be implemented. The addition of Monkeys and Chickens as mounts for cavalry is too far fetched and breaks the immersion. I can assure you that playing a yumi welding chicken riding archer would be fun, but only Africa had chickens large enough to ride. In other words, yes... Ostrich cavalry.

Did you honestly just counter photos from the 1800s showing the size and use of the yumi bow... with a video from Shogun Total War to prove that the Yumi is meant for horse archers also?
...only on Crpg forums...

I really think, as Dionysus (Pittsburgh best burgh)suggested, adding a charge bonus to a formation would be a genuinely new idea and could create a lot more fun for cav in general. Think of the strat battles! Anyway as Shanghai Brave has already stated this is not chicken or monkey, yumi bow is big bow.

Weren't Yumis designed assymetrical so they could be used easier on horseback?
Edit: Did some actual research (Wikipedia) and it shows that this theory was disproven due to the yumi being older than Japanese horse archery. However it is made of bamboo, thus making it light enough to be 1 slot.

I believe the Yumi design was made to be easier shot while kneeling or on one knee, because you hold the bow with the bow length above your hand longer than the length below your grasping hand. This feature also helped maneuver the bow left and right on horseback easier because it gives more room. While holding bows like euro longbows, you hold it mainly in the center. I'm not 100% correct though

cRPG isn't a game based on formations and never will be
tbh i've seen people on Chinese servers making a horse formations on plain terrains very often: visitors can't see pics , please register or login
So, it's quite easy to form a group of cav players together and I do not see any obstacles in the game engine / interface, that could prevent you to organize such powerful formation. And if in on-line mode most people aka shitlords just rushing madly into a battlefield separately, it doesn't mean that this game isn't based on formations. And the singleplayer is literally based on formations, and you cant successfully beat the enemies if you don't manage your squad's parties / formations with correct orders.
You will never, ever see "formations" of heavy cav succeed in this game
I remember Krems playing in early April with 6-8 players, each one mounted at heavy horse. And they were destroying everything around just before they disconnected at the late night. So I already did have seen that the heavy cav squadron is kinda successful in this game
Anyways I am totally agree with Shanghai_Brave. Horse is not a monkey ffs!

This thread is hilarious. but if it is possible, i would like to see bonus charge stats for cavalry riders near each other, similar to the shield bonus mechanic. With the current charge stats on most horses (medium-light, 6riding and less), they do not deal much damage at all to people in 40+ armor when bumping. Formations would only really work with lancer cavalry and it would be interesting to see actual bumping to be the source of damage if cav was stacked.

Not to sound like an ignorant but what is the shield bonus you people are mentioning? There's so much in Warband and cRPG I still don't know about...
Regardless, I'm with what someone previously said (I think it was Kafein): most maps just don't allow proper cavalry formations and teamwork. They either have huge hills or are filled with tree trunks, rocks or anything that stops your horse at the slightest bump (if it's not one of those village maps that pretty much negate cav). However, it would be really nice to see heavy cav work as a team. As it is right now, they end up riding around defenseless 1 handers or rangers picking them off with no effort in a 1 on 1 (which looks pretty silly and absurd from my perspective). Sadly, I can't really think of anything to avoid this myself, although reducing their turn sounds good to me.
Also, I'm no moderator but please calm down, Shanghai. You sound a tad too hostile in my opinion.

I got to do that when I was on student exchange, it was fucking boss!
They asked me when I showed up "Have you ridden a horse." "Yes." "Here get on this horse and ride around shooting things, you'll love it." "Fuck and or yes!".
Little known fact: the Japanese used to start most battles by lining up and firing arrows at each other before drawing their swords and hacking each other up. Samurai generally trained in lots of different elements of combat and most were competent even excellent bowmen.

If you do, change your language settings. There are two Chinese language settings. They are abbreviated as CN or CZ or something, I can't remember without the screen in front of me. Very easy to change back as long as you remember which options tab it is in. You can see what people type (even if you can't read it). There are usually a few people who respond in english if you type something into chat with the Chinese language setting.
At certain times of day, the CN server has more people than NA or EU server. Everyone should try it out. I am on east coast of America, but ping isn't too bad. You can feel the difference but it is still playable.
