Title: I wanted to share something important with the community
Post by: Snufalufagus on April 22, 2014, 08:18:45 am
Alright, disclaimer: I'm Fucking OLD!!!

I'll get right to it.  A lot of people i like in this game use slurs, and slang that many find insulting.  I often think it's because they are too young to know what it means.  Not in the sense of what the word means, but in the real world sense.  I know most kids live fairly sheltered lives, where no harm can really come to them.  There are no repercussions for saying something disrespectful.

I first moved to Texas when i was 19. To a town called Vidor to be specific.

This incident had just happened an hour north, as in six years ago.
(click to show/hide)

I was told by a friend the only reason it was reported, was that the cop reporting it was new from California.  Now to clarify I did not move here because i was drawn to racism, quite the opposite in fact.  The Klan members are all in the deep woods in the trashy part of town.

The reason i write this is because, i know the meaning of the words.  I've seen a dressed up Klan Klown say friend, and mean it.  You will not forget a moment like that.  People die because of its meaning often enough.  Missing people are not all missing.  Some are killed.

I grew up in Utah, and as for the word Bundle of sticks people always cited this incident.

(click to show/hide)

I'm not a white knight, or someone who has a high opinion of myself.  I don't think I'm better than anyone, and a lot of the people who use these terms i like.  I believe that some people don't know what it means, and with help from comedians who can blame them.  Sure i love the Bill Burr bit about being a my old friend, or any South Park mention. I love Dave Chappele, but not all of us should try to say what he says.

Anyway, I'm sure i will get lots of minus for this, and I'm sure not everyone wants to think anything at all is serious in life. Someone has to say something besides that is offensive.  Someone has to say why.  Racism isn't some old thing that died in the 60s.  Bundle of sticks isn't just something people call their friends.

Have fun and respect everyone.   Also to the inevitable haters, fuck you I did my best at writing this!

I don't understand what the relevance of this article is in regards to the word 'my old friendgot'.

I must say that at least the word my old friendgot is so deeply ingrained into internet culture that it's usage has been pulled away from blatant homophobia. I don't think that with the current widespread usage in internet culture there should be any policing on the word by server administration or anything, as it is not their job to change the internet.

Changing the internet is about changing attitudes and making people understand what they are saying and what effects it has on people, which is what this topic aims towards which I support. It's a well-documented phenomenon that well-educated people falsely assume that they can joke around with prejudice and discrimination because 'they know better' and they assume other people know that they know better. Similarly well-documented is that real prejudice and use of derogatory terms are mutually constitutive. Prejudice causes the usage of slurs, but simultaneously slurs create the possibility for prejudice to grow stronger or in the very least continue to exist.

Using discriminatory derogatory terms is not harmless and keeps prejudice alive, regardless whether you use these terms out of actual personal prejudice or just in a joking manner. I think it is very important that everybody personally realizes that. Saying 'jew', 'friend' or 'my old friend' is in no way preferable to calling someone an asshole or a motherfucker, simply because the latter terms do not reflect an opinion on large groups of normal human beings that deserve respect. Yes, I do not see motherfuckers as a group worthy of respect.

That said, I can't bring myself to not throw the occasional my old friend and a racist joke out here and there. Oversensitiveness and taboo is a thing to avoid as well in my opinion.

As a homosexual player of C-rpg, I do not take offence to someone calling someone else a my old friend, hell I do it myself. I use it in the sense to call someone an asshole rather than a homosexual. I can't comment on the others as I'm neither Jewish nor Black, but we also have to remember just because I don't take offence that it doesn't mean there isn't some homosexual out there on c-rpg who feels the same way.

I'm no saint by any means everybody who's played with me on EU1 or been in TS knows that, but the n-word and using the term rape have always been akward for me and I never used them, on the other hand words my old friend, retard, downie I never had problem with which is dumb I know.

I can´t take the swearword "bundle of sticks" serious anyways, I´ve never heard it outside of crpg and everytime I see it I only have this image in my head

It´s like calling me "pile of rocks" or "bag of potatoes", it just has no effect.

bundle of stickss (Buddle of sticks) and my old friends (cigarette)  have something in common, they're burned. People are called bundle of stickss because they're insinuating that gays should be burned, as the church did in the medieval times.

What is the purpose of this thread honestly? To tell us that "nigger" and "faggot" are actually real bad words? Well no shit, that's why internet uses them, they're not gonna use "go fuck yourself, my sweet cupcake" to insult someone.

Or are you trying to tell us that those are the words that real world racists/discriminators use? Good, let's forget that everyone knew that already and ask you how does this relate to internet communities, especially one such as ours, who probably doesn't house a single real racist.

Unfortunately, the internet has bred a generation of self-righteous narcissists who will never heed your word.

Yes, those are offensive. And rape is a horrible crime rather than something to say when you win or lose a round every five minutes. People won't stop saying them. Most of the people saying them in online games aren't using them because they are racist or homophobes or whatever. It's just a generic curse word at this point. The history of the word is irrelevant to them, it's just another stand-in for fuck shit piss.

Personally, I opt for over-the-top swears and insults. Saying "fag" takes no thought or even keyboard work. "Idiot bitch fucker" or "you'are mother abuses polearm thrusts w her dildo" is the superior course of action when you want to lay down the verbal smackdown.

i like this OP

this is exactly my experience, (perhaps to a slightly lesser extent), but i live in a city in england which is ~~ 50% white british, ~~ 40% pakistani / south asian and ~~ 10% eastern european

throughout my entire life i've seen/heard massively disturbing things relating to race, i've heard of gangs of white guys going "paki bashing", "friend hunting", my dad was held over a cliff when he was 12 by a group of pakistani guys because my uncle beat up one of their friends, etc etc, basically just mass violence and hate related to race

so as OP says, when i see a lot of people on the internet; many of whom are ~~ 15-20 years old, no real life experience, many living completely sheltered lives, using these amazingly racist terms (constantly saying jew as derogatory, my old friend, friend, etc etc), it really does shock me

the point is you should watch what you say, one day you might actually meet that black/jewish/gay guy who's member of family was actually raped and murdered by KKK / neo chocolate chip cookies, and it might all come home to you what you're actually saying

Not an ordinary "swearing is bad, mkay?"-thread; OP is kindly reminding us that we should hesitate for a moment and realize that swearing at others could hurt/actually may hurt them more than we think. After all, you´re playing and talking with real people (although I keep forgetting that from time to time ).

You can offend people with just about any (bad) word, will we make a thread for each? It's the internet, grow some balls. This isn't real life, you hardly have the same interaction or relationship with real people.

The internet and real life are not separate realities entirely divorced from one another, but do you really think that throwing an insult towards a nebulous and faceless player on internet horse game is the same as saying something hateful to a stranger in person?

It's an online game, there are a different set of expectations and social norms. Let's turn this into a sociology/anthropology discussion on "internet and gaming culture" guys.

+1's for everyone. Also, some of you nerdbags shouldn't get so offended over teh interwebs. Get some thicker skin and let it go in one ear and out the other. Know who you are and don't let anyone change you.

except if testi insults you, that's when you know you're an ass

Also, I'm just spewing random crap. Don't listen to me. Anyone can tell you this shit.

Also #2, I'm for people saying whatever they damn well please. I support free speech, and I can take whatever people throw at me. If they're a blatant asshole, then I'll just mute them (that's what mute button is for).

Also #3, If you are going to insult someone, use creative insults. It makes everything so much more fun.

i didn't say they were the same

but there are gay /black / jewish people on the internet who are very upset by the constant use of these words, and the culture of passive and (unfortunately) accepted hate and bullying towards them on the internet, and i think that it's a very simple thing for us to use words like cunt, motherfucker, bastard and twat to vent our frustration, instead of words which are derogatory towards an entire class of people.

interestingly, the people in my experience i have seen being the most racist, the most homophobic, etc, are the people who are at the bottom of the social ladder. many of the most bigoted and homophobic people i know are sweaty, poorly educated fat guys who haven't had sex in 3 years .. just saying ..

This a hundreed times, the butthurt in this thread is off the charts. It's ridiculous, I remember back then on the internet calling people retards or whatever online was never taken seriously. For fuck sake, why do people take it seriously? You are being insulted by A RANDOM PERSON ONLINE. WHO CARES?

Getting upset over the word friend, or anything else is childish as fuck. Or the word homo/gay etc. Infact the more you people hate it, the more I'll use it. That's the whole point of insulting people. I didn't know it touches them deeply this much. Now I know, now. It will get worse.

This is kind of pathetic.  Yea.... people are racist.... yea.... they are fucking hateful.  But it's not like whites are the only ones.  Ever heard of the Nashville horror?  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_of_Channon_Christian_and_Christopher_Newsom  That was fucking evil.

I moved from an all white city in NE Ohio to New Orleans when I was 12 years old.  I went from one black kid on the bus (who was well treated as I recall) to being the only white kid in the school.  It was more than culture shock.  I know what it's like to be on the other end of things.  I HATED blacks for a LONG time because of it.  But.... as all things do... life moves on.  I met some of the best friends I ever had a few years later and it changed my mind.  I recognized that hate is hate.  They hate us... we hate them... it's all the same.  In reality there are good people and bad people.  Most of you probably have no idea what it's like.

I don't use words like "friend" because I don't want to lump the good in with the bad.  I think thats pretty damn ignorant.  I'm sure they don't like hearing it anymore than I liked being called white boy.  But it's a personal choice.  I don't believe in political correctness and I rarely shake my finger at someone and tell them how they should speak.

So in all honesty....  if you get off on calling people shit for no reason then you got a cancer inside you.  It's going to grow and consume you.  You have every RIGHT to do it..... and sure... there are legit arguments to be made.  Sure... there are statistics and stories like the ones above.  They enrage you... and they should.  Hearing how two decent white people minding their own business were raped and murdered in the most brutal fashion all because they were white.... pisses me off.  But I'm sure blacks hearing about the guy drug behind the truck in Texas a few years ago pisses them off too.  I've learned the difference between hating the whole community... and hating the evil things some people do.  Not to get all preachy etc.... but if you want the world to be a better place then fight evil with good.  Give money to the poor.  Be kind to people.  Stand up tall for the things you believe in and make your case with passion and integrity.  We are all in this shit together.  Evil is everywhere.  It's blind and consuming.  So take a good look at where you stand and what the words from your mouth actually mean.  It's easy to be a coward.  Cowards fit the world into a little box they can understand so they don't have to accept the reality they live in.  It's easy to be mean.  There are plenty of violent mean people in this world.  Rapists, murderers, child molesters..... There are all kinds of people who get off on destroying someone else's life.  Bravery is recognizing the world for the way it really is and choosing your side.  It takes a tough kid to get his ass beat over a seat on the bus everyday and never back down.  But it takes true courage to let go of hate and plant your flag into the ground with faith.  I made my choice a long time ago.  I don't have long on this Earth but I'll be damned if I spend it full of anger and hatred.  Instead I help people.  What do you do?

Just my opinion.  If you don't like it fuck off.  Not one of you is going to make me feel bad for it.  I know where I stand and what I believe.

Okay now to be serious.
Honestly I don't see a big deal with these used in games or other context BUT the key word is context!
There is a big difference between  saying "fuckin 2h my old friends are op" when talking about a game and saying "Whats up my old friends?" as you walk into a room. Even if no one is a "my old friend" that wouldn't make the person who said it any less of a dick. Yes it may be a joke but when it happens no normal person thinks "Hahahaha sick joke bro howyadoin?". They think "What a douchebag...".

So yeah... People can debate whether it is "Politically correct (how can politics be correct?)" or not but the reason people use these words are because they are dramatic and they are insults. We would just use some other forbidden words to express ourselves. As I said earlier a lot of people have no problem with internet insults and on a rare occasion tolerate it in other places. Just.. just try to be tolerant  and use common sense is what I am trying to say.

Besides I don't think any of you can tell us that you have not once laughed at light hearted racism or sexism. And as Witchcraft said below, yes people will be offended if you call them cunts or nigs or my old friends THEY ARE INSULTS and they will be used that way for quite some time. BUT there is no sense in being offended for someone else. Yes isms are bad, but you are just going to have to tolerate it or try to moderate it, not have a heart attack because someone got mad for petty reasons. Hate is hate and insults are insults, lets try to keep it that way.

Tl;dr: Yes it is bad to be a racist homophobic misogynistic bastard, but there is a big difference between insulting someone because you are upset for some reason and hating them for what they are and using it to alienate them.

I didn't want to start a race war, I simply wanted to say in some parts of the world these words have meaning.  I would wager most of the people so excited to use them live in a very very safe suburbia, and have experienced very little of the real world.  I don't have white guilt, I'm not even politically correct, I am merely a rational human being.  I don't understand why being rational is so abhorrent.

Cause you are not "rational" in any sense or defenition of the word. Why didn't you add more insults to that list of yours? How about cracker, whitey etc? How are these any less insulting. Is there any explenation to this that you have my non-politically correct friend?

Honestly, this thread came off wrong. Because for some magical fucking reason, you think ONLY white people can be racist. And despite the fact that the opposite happens every day, you choose to ignore it. I hope this thread gets locked.

You're like one of those people that say "Don't hit hit women". How about .. "Don't hit other people"? Maybe you know .. Maybe, it is just smarter? Instead of being a cherrypicker. I get called all kinds of shit every day online, from forums to imageboards. I don't care and nor should you. You don't know anything about racism either, you are what you described us as.

Tl;dr: Yes it is bad to be a racist homophobic misogynistic bastard, but there is a big difference between insulting someone because you are upset for some reason and hating them for what they are and using it to alienate them.
tldr ur a cunt

It's an online game, there are a different set of expectations and social norms. Let's turn this into a sociology/anthropology discussion on "internet and gaming culture" guys.

Let's not
Oh how you tempt me. Anyone who thinks their words are meaningless, or that seemingly minor actions cannot also have major effects, should go read The Tipping Point(or you could, you know, just grow the fuck up  ).

Whether or not you personally are bothered by certain comments, completely misses the point(I don't even get offended by this shit irl). It's just that it can have a serious impact, and being a mature, responsible person, you have to acknowledge that.

Also misleading title to thread, there is nothing important here. At all, in the slightest sense. Nothing is important. It is just overly protected kids whining about how someone called them "friend" online. So important amirite?!

Well it seems for most people saying these words is very important.  Very well i won't be the one that stops you.  Perhaps one night you will be at a bar you don't know anyone at.  You will get drunk and say your favorite internet words, and wake up with no teeth, or never wake up.  It's no skin off my nose.  If you read my posts at all, you would see i was not butt-hurt.  I was being logical, and the people who attacked the post where highly emotional/butt-hurt.  I still love everyone.   I support Canary, and others booting/banning people for being supreme jackasses. Best of luck in real life friends.
